Abstract

River water quality could be determined by understanding the capacity of pollutants in a water body. Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) is one of the fuzzy clustering methods for determining river water quality by measuring water quality parameters, that is, dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved solids (TDS). The FCM algorithm is an effective fuzzy clustering algorithm for grouping data but often produces local and inconsistent optimal solutions due to the partition matrix's random initialisation process.  Therefore, this study proposes to modify the FCM algorithm to be precise in the partition matrix initialisation process using several distance concepts. The purpose of the proposed algorithm modification is to get more consistent FCM clustering results and minimise stop iterations. The validation process for the clustering results uses the FCM algorithm, and the FCM modification algorithm uses three parameters, namely the Partition Coefficient Index (PCI), Partition Entropy Index (PEI) and Silhouette Score (SS). The experiments were conducted with three replications and using various distance concepts. The results showed that the number of iterations stopped in the FCM algorithm has different values for PCI, PEI, SS, and stop iterations and objective functions in each trial. On the contrary, the FCM modification algorithm has consistent PCI, PEI, and SS values, and the number of iterations stops with fewer iterations. Therefore, the modified algorithm for initialising the partition matrix can be used in the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm.

Abstract

Research on riparian vegetation and ecosystem services perception is essential to encourage community involvement in river area management. Therefore, this study aims to examine the composition of riparian vegetation along the upper Gajahwong River and assess local community perceptions of the ecosystem services provided by riparian biodiversity. Vegetation composition was studied through a floristic survey using plots placed along transects at three locations; Hargobinangun, Sardonoharjo, and Minomartani. Community perception was assessed through a survey of 60 randomly selected residents from the three villages studied. Data analysis involved calculating species richness, and species diversity, and analyzing community perceptions based on response percentages. The study identified more than 70 plant species at each site, with a very high diversity index (>4). Species with high Importance Value (IV) included Ficus racemosa (3.11), Dieffenbachia seguine (4.40), and Acalypha indica (3.59). Dominant plant families included Araceae, Fabaceae, and Moraceae, which provide essential provisioning and regulating ecosystem functions. Regarding community perception, the study found that residents recognized ecosystem functions, including provisioning services, regulating services, and socio-cultural services. Their understanding of ecosystem services was influenced by cultural values, particularly Javanese traditions emphasizing the importance of nature conservation.

Abstract

Research on river health assessment using biomonitoring with community empowerment through citizen science remains limited. This study aims to evaluate river health using biological indicators while fostering community involvement in data collection and analysis. The study focuses on the Gajahwong River in Yogyakarta City, an urban river undergoing changes due to urbanization. The methodology includes river health assessment based on macroinvertebrate biomonitoring, diversity index calculations, and a qualitative evaluation of the Citizen Index of Ecological Integrity (CIEI). Additionally, water quality data from the Environmental Agency (DLH) were analyzed as a comparison to community-collected data. Overall, the results indicate that the biological index falls under the moderately polluted category, consistent with abiotic parameter measurements (nitrate and phosphate), which also indicate pollution. Meanwhile, the CIEI reflects the community's perception of the ecological condition of the Gajahwong River, classifying it as moderate.

Abstract

Service learning in biomonitoring is urgent as it links science with community action to tackle river health issues.. This research aims to explore the application of service learning in enhancing students' knowledge and their ability to carry out river health biomonitoring projects. The study involved students in implementing the service learning curriculum through stages of planning, execution, reflection, and assessment. During the planning phase, students participated in developing the module. The results indicated that the biomonitoring module received a quality score of 3.8, with clarity of content and factual accuracy achieving the highest scores (4.0). The service learning program was conducted through the establishment of ECOFOREST groups, training sessions, and the application of action plans within the community. The effectiveness was measured using a one-group pretest-posttest design, which revealed a significant improvement in student understanding (t(22) = 2.45, p < 0.05). These findings confirm that service learning not only enhances student engagement in the community but also contributes to their technical competency development. This study addresses the gap in literature regarding service learning within more practical experiential learning frameworks in higher education. The result implies that there has been an increase of knowledge among the participants.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the effect of using picture cards on the reading skills of third-grade elementary school students. This study uses a quantitative experimental research design with a quasi-experimental design. Initial observations showed that students tended to be noisy, lacked focus when the teacher was explaining, and had low interest in reading. The main factors causing this were long and monotonous reading materials, as well as teachers who did not use learning media other than thematic textbooks. This condition made it difficult for students to understand essential information from the text. Therefore, this study tested the use of picture cards on the research sample. The population in this study were third-grade students at UPT SD Negeri 49 Gresik. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely class III B with 24 students as the experimental class that received treatment using picture cards and class III C with 24 students as the control class that did not receive special treatment. Data collection techniques were carried out through reading skill tests before and after treatment (pretest and posttest). Data analysis using the independent sample T-test showed a sig value (2-tailed) ≤ 0.05, namely 0.000, which means that there was a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the use of picture cards can be said to have an effect on the reading comprehension skills of students in grade III of elementary school.

Abstract

Assisted-reproductive technology (ART) has developed rapidly, and has brought controversies in terms of legality and ethics. Todays, majority of people rely on bioethics to address the issue. Yet, bioethics in its development, mostly is influenced by Western values such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Some communities, like Islam, need to respond the issue using “Islamic bioethics”. This paper explores how Muslims in Indonesia tackle the issue and set up “Islamic bioethical values” accordingly. Our literary research found that some individual interpretation and judgments (ijtihād) have been given both by Islamic organizations [Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI)] and outstanding ulama. Fatwas issued by the majorities indicate that although the methods of inquiries are different, the result is the same, that is rejecting the presence of a third party in the form of sperm, ovum, or uterus.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i1.2209
