Abstract

The high activity of catching Shark Ray (Rhinidae) have a big impact on the population and affect the balance of the marine ecosystem. This is supported by the characteristics of stingrays that have a lower reproductive ability, slower growth and higher risk of death. Lack of database information, relating to the Shark Ray can reduce oversight or regulations governing the production of the total catch. So the condition is feared impact on the survival of Shark Ray, especially in Bangka Belitung. One of the important databases that must be done is the accurate identification of fish species Shark Ray as a reference in determining the conservation status. The purpose of this research is to identify the molecular basis Shark Ray and the conservation status of the Shark Ray landed on Bangka Island. Shark Ray samples obtained from a source of potential landing in Bangka Island, namely PPN Sungailiat (Bangka Regency), TPI Ketapang (Pangkalpinang City) and TPI Kurau (Central Bangka Regency). The research method consists of three stages: collection of samples, the molecular identification (mtDNA Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit 1 / COI gene), phylogenetic analysis and conservation status of Shark Ray. The results of the COI gene nucleotide character matching were performed by using the BLAST program integrated into GenBank pages and showed that the three samples of Shark Rays were identified as Rhina Ancylostoma species (Bowmouth guitarfish, Shark Ray) with a rate of similarity of 100%. Based on data from the IUCN Red List, the species Rhina Ancylostomain the category of Critically Endangered (CR) and based on the status of trade, at the 18th CoP meeting in Geneva, on August 2019, CITES has added Wedgefishes (Family Rhinidae) in Appendix II.

Abstract

Nautilus is the only surviving genus whose members were numerous and widely dispersed in the oceans throughout the Jurassic and Miocene times. It represents the only living member from the Family Nautilidae and is often considered as a living fossil. Nautilus is found with high biodiversity in Ambon, Indonesia, and were in special cases even found in Bangka Belitung, far from their original habitat. This study aimed to understand the historical component of the habitat and distribution of Nautilus in Bangka Belitung and to determine the depth, temperature, current, and environmental heterogeneity relate to Nautilus. Nautilus samples were found in Bangka Belitung Seas nearby a crack region at 50–75 m deep while the optimal depth of the Nautilus was 150–300 m, depending on the local area. The locations in the Bangka Belitung Seas where Nautilus found have sea surface temperatures between 30-31°C and 27-28°C during the East Monsoon and the West Monsoon respectivelly. The implications of temperature as a limiting factor are fairly significant, as it restricts the upper limit of the living habitat to predictable depths, which vary both geographically and seasonally during the West Monsoon when surface temperatures approach habitable levels. Sea currents at the Bangka Belitung Seas move at 0–0.6 m.s-1 during the East Monsoon and speed up near the North Natuna Sea. During the West Monsoon, currents predominantly flow from the Natuna Sea to the Java Sea at 0–0.5 m.s-1. Large-scale deep-water currents and the effects of smaller currents on scent dispersal influence the directional movements of Nautilus.

Abstract

Overfishing of wedgefish greatly affects its population and the balance of the marine ecosystem. This is exacerbated by their relatively low fecundity, slow growth, and late maturity results in one of the lowest population growth rate within elasmobranch species. However, lacking database information results in insufficient regulations and surveillance of wedgefish fishing. The current situation is feared to the risk of wedgefish’s survival, especially in Bangka Belitung Islands, Indonesia. Fundamental to a database is the accurate identification of wedgefish species based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. This study aimed to use DNA barcodes to identify, determine the conservation status, and the status according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). We collected samples including unidentified fin samples from confiscated illegal fishing catches, the traditional markets and fishing docks, South Bangka. In this research, we used DNA Barcoding (mitocondrial DNA, COI gene) to identify and examine of wedgefish samples. The tissue samples used in this study were identified as species listed in CITES Appendix II, they are Rhynchobatus australiae, Rhynchobatus springeri and Rhina ancylostoma. According to the IUCN Red List, 100% of the wedgefish species found are Critical Endangered at the global level.
