[The interpretation of Kinoshita Mokutaro’s Kurofune] This article discusses about the interpretation of poetry with semiotic approach. As the object of this study is one of Kinoshita Mokutaro’s poetries: Kurofune. Decoding the dramatic situation and connotation of a poetic text can be helpful for its interpretation. The dramatic situation of Kurofune will be discussed with semiothics theory from Riffaterre. In Riffaterre’s theory, poetry can be interpreted with heuristic and hermeneutic’s reading. The purpose of this article is to know the poetry’s implied meaning. The terms of Black Ships(Kurofune) commonly refer to the American steam-powered warships led by Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry which first arrived in Uraga in 1853. But as the result of the analysis, the term kurofune can be also read as the end of shakoku and the beginning of new era called the Meiji Restoration.

Abstract

(Title: The Interpretasion of Murakami Haruki’s Hitokui Neko) This article aims to reveal the meaning of cats in the short story of Hitokui Neko. The method used is a structural method, namely by analyzing the basic narrative structure of the short story and the main marker of the short story. Then the interpretation of the meaning of the cat in a short story is carried out both in the first or second level interpretation. The results of the analysis show that there are three meanings of cats in the short story of Hitokui Neko. First, denotative-associative meaning. Cats are interpreted as pets, but are also used as associative meanings for children. The use of this associative meaning is used by Izumi when she wants to know the response of “I”  if Izumi is pregnant and then has children. Secondly, cats are denotative-neutral, meaning cats as human pets in general. The use of denotative-neutral meanings can be seen, among others, when “I” tells of his experience of losing his pet cat. Third, denotative-mystical meaning. This meaning appears in the hallucinations of “I”. A cat that is likened to a witch Macbeth appears as an antagonistic force that eats “I”  without resistance.

Abstract

(Title: Physical and Inner Structure of the Poetry of Kimi Shinita Mou Koto Nakare by Yosano Akiko) This research examines Japanese poem shintaishi, Kimi Shinita Mou Koto Nakare by Yosano Akiko using structural and feminism approach. This research aims to understand the structurally context and the meaning of feminism contained in the poem. Yosano Akiko, whose real name is Shou Hou, is the first famous Japanese female poet in the late Meiji era. At that time when Japan was struck by war, the position of women in social and political life had shifted the view that physically women are not strong enough to contribute to the war that reduced the role of women. Women do not see war with an objective view but rather see it subjectively, which they associated with the author’s own condition. The results showed that in addition to convey her aspirations as a woman after the war, there were several images which are contained in Kimi Shinita Mou Koto Nakare.
