Abstract

Final-year students should have the ability and competence to write, including in writing their thesis abstracts. Although short, abstract writing must pay attention to several things. One indicator of good writing is marked by using logical, consistent words that are easy to understand. This study aims to identify the types of cohesion (grammatical and lexical) and coherence in writing abstracts for final students of AKI University and whether they have fulfilled cohesive and coherent writing. This study analyzes 16 undergraduate thesis abstracts for the English Literature study program for the 2019-2022 and 2020-2021 academic years. This study uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to achieve this goal. The result shows that the students use lexical cohesion devices much more than grammatical ones. Unfortunately, neither substitution nor ellipsis devices were found. Even so, the students have pretty good competence in making cohesive abstracts. On the other hand, the results of the coherence analysis show that all students have a good understanding of using all aspects of coherence. But even though they use all aspects, not all students succeed in creating coherent writing wholly.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of feminism in the film Lucy (2014) through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, which explores denotation, connotation, and myth. By analyzing the signs and symbols present in the film, the research aims to uncover the underlying meanings and messages regarding feminism. The data in this research will be collected using documentation techniques and literature studies. The results of this research show that there are multiple signs of feminism that are shown through this film, such as women's autonomy being undermined and their consent not being respected, women are often viewed solely as objects of desire and subjected to physical aggression. However, Lucy showed that women had the capacity to assert themselves and change their circumstances, women had the capability to confront challenges and overcome obstacles, and women could take bold steps and contribute actively to their outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in English Language Teaching (ELT) in higher education based on a systematic review of several relevant articles. The articles analyzed include studies regarding teachers’ knowledge and experiences regarding the use of ICT in English language teaching, as well as the challenges and potential associated with implementing these technologies in the classroom. The findings show that although many teachers, both novice and experienced, show high confidence in using ICT tools, difficulties in pedagogical application and lack of practical training are the main barriers. Some other inhibiting factors are a lack of access to technology, limited infrastructure, and resistance to change among more experienced educators. This article suggests a more holistic approach in preparing educators for ICT integration, including improved professional training focusing on developing pedagogical skills in ICT use and stronger institutional support. Although these challenges are significant, the potential of ICT in improving student engagement and learning outcomes suggests that effective technology integration can significantly impact English language teaching in higher education.

Abstract

Literary translation is a challenging process that requires linguistic skills, cultural sensitivity, and creative interpretation. The distinctive characteristics of literary writings, including figurative language, cultural references, and the emotional profundity of a literary work, maybe diminished throughout the translation process into another language. This study seeks to identify and examine translators' challenges in maintaining meaning across languages in literary texts. The study employed a descriptive quantitative methodology, with 30 professional literary translators as participants. Data were gathered via surveys targeting particular translation challenges associated with idiomatic language, cultural context, and stylistic fidelity. A structured questionnaire comprising closed and scaled items was utilized as the instrument. The results indicate that the predominant challenges faced pertain to sustaining cultural relevance and achieving stylistic similarity. This study finds that good literary translation necessitates a meticulous equilibrium between literal fidelity and creative adaptation to maintain the original work's meaning and emotional resonance.
