Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has encouraged content creators to utilize regional languages as communication strategies to strengthen audience engagement while reinforcing cultural identity. Although previous studies have examined the use of local languages on social media, research specifically explaining how the Ngapak language functions as a digital communication strategy for building audience engagement through the perspective of symbolic interactionism remains limited. This study aims to analyze the Ngapak language-based digital communication strategy employed by the TikTok accounts @RofiqKompak and @Mamichula in fostering audience engagement. A qualitative approach was employed using Herbert Blumer's Symbolic Interactionism framework, emphasizing the concepts of meaning, language, and thought. Data were collected through content observation, documentation, and analysis of audience interactions in the comment sections. The findings reveal that the Ngapak language functions not only as a communication tool but also as a symbol of cultural identity that creates meaning, emotional closeness, and social relationships between creators and audiences. The @RofiqKompak account utilizes Ngapak as a personal branding strategy by combining local identity with experiences of working in South Korea, whereas @Mamichula employs Ngapak to reinforce communication authenticity despite visual characteristics that initially lead audiences to perceive the creator as a foreigner. The findings further demonstrate that the use of the Ngapak language encourages audience participation through comments, likes, and shares while strengthening creator identity and fostering digital community formation on TikTok. This study contributes to the development of digital communication literature by highlighting the strategic role of local cultural identity within symbolic interactionism and offers practical implications for content creators in designing authentic, contextual, and engagement-oriented digital communication strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generation Z's creative thinking skills in digital activities in Pemalang Regency, Indonesia. Although research on generative AI has expanded rapidly, most previous studies have focused on formal educational settings, leaving its role in Generation Z's everyday digital activities relatively underexplored. This study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 100 Generation Z respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and linearity tests, and Spearman's rank correlation with IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The findings indicate that generative AI usage is at a high level (mean = 73.65), while creative thinking skills are categorized as good (mean = 64.01). The correlation analysis reveals a positive and statistically significant relationship between generative AI usage and creative thinking skills (ρ = 0.475; p < 0.05). These findings suggest that generative AI can function as a creative enabler, supporting idea generation and creative development in digital activities when used critically, responsibly, and proportionally. This study contributes empirical evidence to the growing literature on generative AI and creativity by examining Generation Z's everyday digital practices within a local Indonesian context.

Abstract

Drama series as part of popular literary works not only function as a medium of entertainment, but also play an important role in representing the social and cultural realities of society. With the development of digital technology, drama series are now increasingly easily accessible through various streaming platforms, one of which is Netflix. Gadis Kretek, a series adapted from a novel by Ratih Kumala directed by Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah, is a representative example in presenting Javanese traditional culture in a strong and complex way, especially in the socio-historical context of Indonesia in the 1960s. This study aims to analyze the representation of Javanese traditional culture in the Gadis Kretek series using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with Barthes's two-stage semiotic analysis technique, which includes denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. Primary data was obtained from several selected scenes in the Gadis Kretek series that contain Javanese cultural symbols, while secondary data was obtained through library research from scientific journals and supporting literature. The analysis process was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that Javanese cultural symbols such as kebaya, Sido Asih batik cloth, jasmine garlands, blangkon, and chignon are not only displayed as visual elements, but also contain ideological meanings that represent the values of harmony, social hierarchy, spirituality, and the construction of gender roles in Javanese culture. Through semiotic reading, these symbols form a cultural myth that subtly reproduces traditional values and patriarchal structures. Thus, Gadis Kretek not only presents visual entertainment, but also becomes a discursive space that reflects and constructs Javanese cultural identity in popular media.

Abstract

The phenomenon of social media has given birth to a new culture in social life, where digital public opinion often plays the role of moral controller. This study analyzes the representation of Indonesian social media and netizens in the film Budi Pekerti (2023) by Wregas Bhanuteja using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. This research aims to reveal how the ideology of social media and Indonesian netizens is represented in ethical films. The results of the study show that in the text dimension, films depict the distortion of meaning and public judgment in the digital space as a form of instant morality ideology. In the dimension of social cognition, it displays ideological awareness of netizens' culture that is reactive and loses empathy. Meanwhile, in the context dimension, it reflects the condition of Indonesian people who live in the hegemony of social media, where image is more important than humanity.

Abstract

The rapid growth of TikTok has transformed adolescents' communication practices by creating a hyperreal digital environment that shapes language use, self-expression, and identity construction. While previous studies have primarily examined TikTok's influence on social interaction and digital behavior, limited attention has been given to how hyperreality constructs the communication styles of Generation Alpha within school settings. This study aims to analyze the construction of Generation Alpha's communication style in the context of TikTok hyperreality at SMP Negeri 01 Tegal by integrating Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality with Norton's communication style framework. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving 15 students who actively use TikTok. The findings reveal that TikTok functions not only as a social media platform but also as a symbolic environment that reconstructs students' communication practices. Five dominant communication styles—dramatic, animated, open, friendly, and impression-leaving—emerged as manifestations of continuous exposure to TikTok's digital culture. The study further demonstrates that hyperreality encourages students to adopt viral expressions, digital symbols, and idealized online identities, resulting in more expressive yet less formal communication patterns and diminishing the intensity of face-to-face interactions. These findings extend the application of hyperreality theory to the context of adolescent digital communication and provide practical implications for strengthening digital literacy and communication ethics programs within schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the film Melukis Luka represents the psychological impact experienced by ethnic Chinese survivors of the May 1998 tragedy through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques and sign analysis consisting of signs, objects, and interpretants in the film's scenes. The results of the study indicate that the film Melukis Luka represents four main forms of psychological impact, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), excessive anxiety, personality disorders, and difficulties in regulating emotions and behavior. These impacts are depicted through the traumatic experiences of the character Hanry such as nightmares, fear of crowds, withdrawal behavior, and wariness of strangers as a response to the loss of family during the riots. This study concludes that Melukis Luka functions not only as a medium of entertainment, but also as a space for historical reflection and social criticism of the long-term impact of the May 1998 tragedy that is still felt today. Thus, Melukis Luka presents a humanitarian narrative that invites the audience to not forget history and build empathy for survivors who continue to struggle to face their wounds.
