Abstract

Abstract

First-year university students undergo a transitional phase from the school environment to the academic, social, and emotional demands of higher education. This transition often triggers stress when not supported by an adequate social environment. Peer support plays an essential role in this adaptation process by providing emotional support, information, and a sense of belonging. Positive peer relationships can help students manage academic pressure, whereas poor peer interactions may increase the risk of stress. Therefore, peer support serves as a protective factor in maintaining the psychological well-being of first-year students. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected using the Peer Support Questionnaire (PSQ) and the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SSI) from 130 first-year students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, UNISSULA. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using the Gamma correlation test to determine the relationship between the variables. The Gamma test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted, meaning there is a significant relationship between peer support and stress levels among first-year students. The correlation coefficient of –0.737 indicates a strong negative relationship, suggesting that higher peer support is associated with lower stress levels. There is a significant and strong relationship between peer support and stress levels among first-year students at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UNISSULA.

Abstract

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a form of evaluation that demands the physical and mental readiness of nursing students. Academic pressure, the demands of clinical performance, and the fear of failure can trigger anxiety, potentially disrupting sleep patterns. Poor sleep patterns can impact nursing students' concentration, memory, and academic performance.  This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study were students of the Faculty of Nursing, Muhammadiyah University of Semarang who were taking the OSCE exam. The sample size was 119 respondents, taken using a proportionate random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) questionnaire to measure anxiety levels and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep patterns. Data analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately using the Spearman Rank statistical test. The results showed that most respondents were 20 years old (83.2%) and female (82.4%). Most students experienced mild anxiety (43.7%) and had good sleep quality (58.8%). The Spearman Rank test results showed a correlation value (r) = 0.898 with a p-value = 0.000 (p <0.05), which means there is a very strong and significant relationship between students' anxiety levels and sleep patterns in facing the OSCE exam.  There is a very strong and significant relationship between students' anxiety levels and sleep patterns during the OSCE.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transitional period marked by physical, emotional, and social changes. During this phase, adolescents often experience mental stress that can lead to depression. One factor that impacts a teenager's emotional well-being is their parenting style. Good parenting methods are expected to foster a balanced personality in adolescents and reduce the likelihood of depression. Method: This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional method. The target population was all 327 eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Pati. Proportional random sampling was used to select the sample, with a total sample size of 136 respondents. Data were collected through a questionnaire on parenting patterns and a questionnaire measuring depression levels (Beck Depression Inventory). The Spearman Rank test was used for data analysis. Results: The results of this study revealed that the most common parenting style adopted by parents was democratic parenting (44.9%), while the most common level of depression experienced by adolescents was moderate depression (54.4%). The Spearman Rank test yielded a ρ value of -0.512 with p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between parental parenting styles and levels of depression in adolescents at MAN 1 Pati.

Abstract

A lack of self-esteem is often accompanied by nervousness when speaking in front of an audience, but a positive body image can help build confidence. Many challenges await first-year students, including adjusting to a new setting. Still, it's not always easy to perform for a live audience. In order to express themselves on campus, students need to work on their public speaking abilities. The primary objective of this research was to examine the relationship between first-year nursing students' body image perceptions and their anxiety when it comes to presenting in front of an audience. A cross-sectional approach, prevalent in quantitative research, is utilized in this study. Undergraduates from Semarang's Sultan Agung Islamic University's nursing program (class of 2024) participated in the research. A total of 157 students were selected at random. The correlation tool used in this study was Spearman's rank test. A high correlation between first-year nursing students' negative perceptions of their bodies and their anxiety when speaking in front of an audience was found among the 157 research participants (p value 0.000), according to the data analysis. Among the students, nearly half (40.8%) reported extremely low levels of body image satisfaction and nearly half (41.4%) reported extremely high levels of anxiety when it came to public speaking.
