Abstract

Professional identity is the main key construct that cannot be separated from teacher career development. Despite the large number of studies examining professional identity, its relationship with work-related behavior at career stages and their psychological aspects such as self-efficacy has not been extensively investigated, especially in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to look at the correlation between teachers' professional identity and their general self-efficacy. Participants are EFL instructors from the primary to university level in Yogyakarta. The mixed method framework was used to acquire the data with a questionnaire and interview. An altered version of the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) and Teacher Professional Identity Scale (TPIS) questionnaire was used to gather quantitative data. According to the findings of this study, the average score for General Self-Efficacy (GSE) is 40.1333, while the average score for Teacher Professional Identity (TPI) is 55.8667. The Pearson correlation test findings show a modest link between GSE and TPI in this study, with a correlation value of 0.459.

The movie script and the scenes in the movie were the data that were being analysed. Data were collected through observation using a non-participatory technique. The data were analysed using the Barthesian semiotic analysis method. It was found that there were seven types of restricted codes namely secrecy, intimacy, novelty, jocularity, sympathy, expressiveness, and nominative. While the use of elaborated code was found in the forms of verbal and non-verbal communications. Abstract

Slang words can contain particular meanings that cannot be interpreted directly. To know and understand the meaning behind the utterances, EFL learners can employ illocutionary force by analyzing the native speakers' daily communication of slang words. Therefore, this qualitative research aimed to explore the types of slang words and the illocutionary force behind the utterances in the Rampage movie. The data were collected from the movie transcript and analyzed using document analysis to explore the types of slang words and the illocutionary force. The analysis results revealed that all types of slang words were discovered in the movie, and the most used type was imitative, which occurred 14 times. The illocutionary force that underlined the characters implementing the slang words was to show that the speakers have higher status than the interlocutor, understand what they need to do in certain situations, ask other people to do something, want to show their psychological state, and they want to give a promise. The results of this study would enrich EFL learners' knowledge of slang words in particular and their vocabulary items in general.

Abstract

Montessori approach deals with learning in independence and liberty. This way of learning requires students to explore information based on their learning interest. Therefore, reading has become one of the keys in learning successfully in a Montessori school. Moreover, the impact of self-efficacy on the learning outcomes has been explored in the educational psychology as a field of study. This study inspects students’ self-efficacy perceptions and their factors in reading comprehension in a Montessori Junior High School registered in 2018-2019 academic year. It is located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. English is the main language used in the teaching-learning process in the school. The study is conducted by using mixed method. Findings are based on the 27 close-ended questions and three open-ended questions obtained from the students in grade seven and eight. In analyzing the results, concurrent triangulation strategy is applied. The results show that the students have positive self-efficacy perceptions on their reading (Average= 3.449/5), especially in reading, explaining, summarizing texts and comprehending the graphics found in the text without the guidance of their teachers. Their self-efficacy sources are found in their mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional and psychological states.

Abstract

Teacher resilience refers to the ability of teachers to adapt to challenges and overcome difficulties in their professional lives. The debates in literatures have centred around the ideas that resilience is not a static characteristic, but rather a fluid and evolving characteristic that can be cultivated and reinforced through a period of time. Pre-service teachers, especially those engaging in school-based practicums as part of their teacher education, should put significant thought into the identities they cultivate as future educators. This study aims to compare pre-service teachers’ resilience during first and second of their internship at school. The research question deriving from this aim is as follows, “What are the students’ comparative perceptions of their resilience during first and second phase of their internship?  A questionnaire was employed to gather the data needed for the research. The findings show that second phase internship students have greater teacher resilience than the first phase internship students. The differences seen can be linked to a range of reasons, including disparate encounters during the teaching practicum, self-efficacy, social support, and the ability to interpret challenges as prospects for growth. Moreover, it has been found that external factors, such as parental expectations and financial considerations, have a significant impact on the development of teacher identity and passion for the teaching profession.

Abstract

The main issue in this research is how to determine the dominant type of motivation perceived by junior high school students in learning English, and how the factors of self-satisfaction and obligation shape students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the process of learning English. The research aims to know the dominant motivation type perceived by junior high schools in learning English and how self-satisfaction and obligation shape the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn English. This research employed a mixed method that combines the quantitative and qualitative data. The researchers used a closed-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview to gather the data. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed by calculating the mean of each statement. The Likert scale was applied to assess the level and type of student's motivation to learn English. At the same time, the interview data were analyzed. The participants of this research were 60 students of SMP N 1 Selopampang Temanggung. The findings showed the students’ extrinsic motivation to learn English is at a high level, while the students’ intrinsic motivation is at a moderate level. Moreover, intrinsic motivation is influenced by self-satisfaction and excitement. However, extrinsic motivation is a combination of control regulation style and self-satisfaction. Hence obligation is the factor that can drive the individual to self-satisfaction. The finding of this research would impact the teacher in teaching media, material, and strategies selected to increase the student's learning motivation and reduce the students' learning loss.
