Abstract

This is a type of development research with the main stages of preliminary and formative evaluation consisting of self-evaluation, expert review, one-on-one, small group, and field tests, with the goal of producing valid and practical PISA-like numerical problems and having an effect potential in the context of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants in this study were eighth-grade students younger than 15 years old. The qualitative analysis of this study's findings was conducted on the basis of student responses to the field test. This study's data collection methods included walkthroughs, observations, interviews, and tests. This study produced the development of a PISA-like numerical problem with the characteristics of the Change and Relationship content, the vaccine context, and the social analysis context, all of which were valid and applicable. According to the results of the validator's evaluation, the questions are sound in terms of content, structure, and language. Practically illustrated from the results of small group trials where the majority of students can easily comprehend and interpret the material. Based on the results of field trials, it can be concluded that the PISA-like numerical problems in the context of a pandemic vaccine has the potential to improve students' mathematical literacy skills.

Abstract

Research and development of a module for reading explanatory texts based on inquiry methods and PISA standardized questions has been carried out in class VIII SMP N 52 Palembang. This study aimed to produce reading modules that suit the needs of teachers and students. The research method used was development research with the steps of research on the development of the Jolly and Bolitho and Dick, Carey & Carey models which include identification of needs, exploration of material needs, contextual realization, production of materials, expert validation, one to one evaluation, small group and field tests. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, validation sheets, and tests. The results showed that the feasibility aspect of content and presentation obtained a percentage of 84% in the very good category, linguistic feasibility obtained a percentage of 90% and was categorized as very good, graphics obtained a percentage of 76% in the good category, validation questions received a percentage of 85% in the very good category. Practicality in the one-to-one evaluation stage and the small group gets a percentage of 80% in the practical category. The effectiveness measured in the field test is 0.49 and is in the medium category. Thus, the product in the form of a module for reading explanatory texts based on inquiry methods and PISA standardized questions can be used in learning explanatory texts.

Abstract

Numeracy is the essential skill for life situations that involve mathematical elements and developing students’ numeracy skills is considered a primary goal of mathematics education. Despite its importance, numeracy can be challenging to teach, and it is not a guaranteed result of classroom mathematics learning. Through a systematic literature review, 35 studies about supporting students in becoming numerate in classrooms or courses are explored, this literature review also explained abilities included as numeracy, recommendations for teachers are given as well as some examples was given, also opportunities and directions for further research are identified, including guidelines for enhancing students’ numeracy competence.

Abstract

This study is motivated by students’ low conceptual understanding and spatial reasoning in rotation, as well as the limited integration of local cultural contexts with digital technology in mathematics learning. It aims to design and validate a PMRI-based Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) integrating Songket Mak Raje and Desmos to develop students’ conceptual understanding and spatial reasoning on rotation. The study employs a design research method of the validation study type, involving 6 students in the pilot experiment and 36 students in the teaching experiment. The main instrument is a Desmos-based E-LAS. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of students’ work documents and analyzed qualitatively using thematic and retrospective approaches. The results show that the developed HLT is valid and effective in developing students’ conceptual understanding and spatial reasoning. Retrospective analysis produced a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) as a refinement of the HLT, emphasizing gradual scaffolding, explicit articulation of rotation properties through guided inquiry before formal generalization, and early introduction of non-contextual problems with geometric constraints to foster spatial reasoning. This study implies a model for integrating ethnomathematics and digital technology, a PMRI-based LIT as a guide for instructional design, and a practical and validated Desmos-based E-LAS prototype.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the mathematical ability of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Sungai Keruh, Musi Banyuasin Regency in solving problems on the material of straight line equations by using the context of school cooperatives where school cooperatives provide an authentic context-based learning environment, allowing students to directly apply the concepts they have learned, including in the field of mathematics. Students' ability to solve mathematical problems plays an important role in determining the level of student success in learning. The subjects this study involved 30 students who were class VIII students. To describe in depth the students' ability to solve problems, a comprehensive approach is needed that not only includes the final results, but also the thought processes and strategies they use in solving these problems. With descriptive method and qualitative approach is the type of this research. The tool instrument in this study used in the form of an instrument to do a test on the ability solve mathematical problems with the material straight line equations as much as 2 activities of problem test activities and in the form of interviews. The level of students' ability to solve math problems at each Polya stage is as follows. 27% of students are categorized as high ability, 50% of students with medium ability and 23% of students with low ability to solve problems. In general, this situation illustrates that students' ability to solve mathematical problems is at a moderate level. These results illustrate that students' ability to solve mathematical problems can be improved through a more contextualized direct approach where problem-based learning helps students understand mathematical concepts by linking theory to real situations, encouraging students to think critically in solving problems directly using problems that are very relevant in everyday life.
