Abstract

Gross motor skills are essential for supporting the physical development of primary school-aged children; however, the increasing use of digital devices reduces their engagement in traditional physical activities. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the traditional Tapa Gala game in improving the gross motor skills of fourth-grade students at SDN 2 Tawali Wera. This study uses a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design, involving 12 students aged 9–10 years. The Tapa Gala Gross Motor Test (TMK-TG) includes four subtests: Zig-Zag Running, Standing Long Jump, Chasing Running, and Imitating Movement. The data were analyzed using paired t-tests to determine significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores. The results showed a significant improvement in gross motor skills following the intervention, with an average pre-test score of 40.25 and a post-test score of 50.42 (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Based on the classification, 25% of students were in the “Very Good” category, 67% in the “Good” category, and 8% in the “Sufficient” category. These results indicate that the traditional Tapa Gala game can be effectively implemented as a contextualized, enjoyable, and culturally rich physical learning method to support children’s gross motor development. This study provides further evidence that games based on local wisdom can serve as an alternative learning strategy to support students’ physical competence while preserving traditional games within modern education. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the Mpa’a Geo game model in relation to the preservation of Bima culture at SMPN 3 Bima City. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. Data were analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, conducted before and during fieldwork. The participants in this study were students from class 3A at SMPN 3 Bima City. The research instruments included observation sheets, interview guides, and documentation. The findings revealed that although numerous traditional games exist in the Bima region, their practice has gradually diminished over time. Traditional games offer various benefits, including: (1) fostering creativity, (2) serving as a therapeutic tool for children, (3) enhancing intellectual intelligence, (4) improving interpersonal and emotional intelligence, (5) developing logical reasoning, (6) strengthening kinesthetic abilities, (7) nurturing naturalistic intelligence, (8) enhancing intrapersonal intelligence, (9) improving musical intelligence, and (10) fostering spiritual growth. In contrast, modern games tend to reduce peer interaction and promote individualistic behavior among children. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mpa’a Geo traditional game model contributes significantly to the preservation of Bima culture among students at SMPN 3 Bima City in physical education learning.

Abstract

Background. Games are a cultural heritage that has educational value and plays an important role in shaping the character of students, especially amid the dominance of digital games that tend to reduce social interaction and contextual learning experiences. Objectives. This study aims to analyse the development of trends in traditional game research in character building through a bibliometric approach that covers publication growth, author productivity, journal sources, institutional affiliations, country contributions, as well as topic network mapping and research opportunities. Methods. The method used was bibliometric analysis of 73 Scopus-indexed articles from 2002 to 2025 with the keywords ‘traditional games’ and ‘character’, which were analysed using VOSviewer, R Program, and Biblioshiny for network visualisation and trend mapping. Results. The results of the study show a significant increase in publications since the mid-2010s, with Indonesia as the main contributor in terms of the number of publications and citations. The theme of ‘traditional games’ has become the centre of a network connected to character education, early childhood education, social skills, and the integration of digital-based serious games, as well as showing a shift in focus from cultural aspects to pedagogical innovation and cultural literacy. Conclusion. It is concluded that traditional games have developed as multidimensional pedagogical instruments that support the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of students, while also opening up opportunities for further research on technology integration, ethnomotor approaches, and the strengthening of implementative policies in the education system.
