Abstract

This study investigates the optimization of heavy metal reduction in solid waste from the chemical industry using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the extraction parameters for removing Co, Cu, Pb, and Cr using NaCl as a solvent with Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a chelating agent. The effects of EDTA:Fly Ash ratio, mixing duration, and extraction temperature were evaluated using induced coupled plasma (ICP) and Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy-Dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDS) analysis. NaCl proved effective in reducing Co, Cr, and Pb levels. Optimal conditions for NaCl treatment were identified as an EDTA:Fly Ash ratio of 2:1, 3 hours of mixing time, and an extraction temperature of 52.3 ℃, resulting in a 92.3% total metal reduction. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of the model, with high R² values (0.932 – 0.991) for all metals. The EDTA:Fly Ash ratio and its interaction with mixing duration were found to be the most influential factors in the process. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of RSM in optimizing heavy metal reduction processes and provides insights for improving waste management practices in the chemical industry. The findings highlight the importance of process parameter optimization in enhancing the efficiency of heavy metal removal from industrial solid waste.

Abstract

The synthesis of the ZnO-biochar composite from palm kernel shell biomass waste has been accomplished through the utilization of thesolvothermal method, yielding a satisfactory outcome. The resulting composite, a combination of ZnO and biochar, has been utilized in the degradation of methylene blue waste compounds. The objective of this research is to synthesize ZnO-biochar composites from palm shells, and to determine the optimal solvothermal temperature and duration. This research was initiated with the preparation of palm shells into biochar. Subsequently, the ZnO-biochar composite was synthesized with variable solvothermal temperatures and solvothermal times. The ZnO-biochar composite was characterized using analytical techniques including SEM-EDX, FT-IR, XRD, BET and UV-vis DRS. The most effective degradation of methylene blue was exhibited by the ZnO-biochar composite sample synthesized at a solvothermal temperature of 180 ̊C and a solvothermal time of 10 hours, achieving a degradation of 88.29%. The enhanced photodegradation performance of this composite sample is attributed to its high surface area, capacity for visible light absorption, and the dimensions of the active crystals, which can account for the high performance of the ZnO-biochar composite for photocatalytic degradation.

Abstract

Coffee grounds have a fairly high oil content in the seeds of around 15-20% which has great potential to be used as raw material for making biodiesel. This study aims to determine the physical characteristics of coffee grounds biodiesel; and to determine the effect of stirring speed, amount of catalyst and reaction time on the yield of coffee grounds biodiesel. The type of research on biodiesel production from coffee grounds waste is quantitative. The data collection method is carried out by experimenting on biodiesel that has been obtained from coffee grounds waste oil on the concentration of KOH catalyst, stirring speed and reaction time. After the required data has been collected, an analysis is carried out using a descriptive and analytical case study method. The result of the study obtained the best condition, namely at a KOH catalyst concentration of 3% wt oil, and a stirring speed of 800 rpm, a biodiesel yield of 30,19%. So it can be concluded that coffee grounds oil biodiesel has been successfully obtained and has met the quality standards of ASTM D6751 and EN 14214. The yield of biodiesel produced increased along with the increasing transesterification reaction time. GC-MS analysis showed that coffee grounds oil biodiesel was mostly composed of linoleic acid and palmitic acid. The implications of this research can be used in the development of further research related to innovations in improving environmentally friendly fuels based on organic waste.
