Abstract

The central role of Mahakam River in the construction of Mahakam Delta is to supply sediment from terrestrial to the river mouth. The river upstream comes from Mount Camaru and the downstream part terminate at Makasar Strait. The surrounding area of the river is overgrown by wet tropical flora that produces pollen. The existence pollen in river sediments as an indicator that sediment came from terrestrial, and foraminifera as an indicator that sediment came from marine. The ratio changes of pollen to foraminifera show that there were differences of sediment source supply. The study was conducted at the river mouth. A shallow core, 200 cm depth, composed of sand and mud and sandy mud, from it taken vertically 11 samples to be analyzed pollen and foraminifera. Sample preparation was using standard methods acetolysis. Meanwhile, sample preparation of foraminifera using Hydrogen Peroxide method. Pollen found at all samples, but foraminifera only found in 8 samples. The data indicating that sedimentation process in the mouth of a river not only gets sediment supplies from terrestrial but also from marine. The quantity of pollen and foraminifera varies vertically. The frequency of pollen much higher than foraminifera that indicates of source sediments dominance came from terrestrial which carried by Mahakam river current. Sonneratia caseolaris pollen continuously found in all samples. Stictogongylus vandiemensis is species foraminifera the most common that followed by Ramulina confossa, both of them come from the sea particularly from the shallow sea.

Abstract

AbstractAlgae is known as a photosynthetic microorganism that don’t have a true body with very broad distributions of the environment. Algae have a lot of functions, one of which is an indicator of environmental change. The Bandung Basin area has been researched from several aspects. However, research especially from the algae aspect that shows environmental changes, has not been carried out in this area. This research was conducted to see how the environmental changes of Lake Bandung sag pond deposits in the Bandung Basin by using algae diversity and grain size deposits. The acetolysis method is carried out to see algae content in the sediment, and rock description is carried out to see the grain size of the sediment in the study area. Furthermore, data analysis and modeling were conducted by grouping algae according to environmental conditions which are divided into Pinnularia group, Euglena group, and other groups. The result showed that the study area occurred four times in environmental changes which were divided into zones and subzones. Each zone initially had polluted water conditions characterized by an increase in Euglena groups and the fine grain size of sediment. While in the end, the waters showed normal water conditions characterized by an increase in Pinnularia group and the grain size of the sediment became coarser.

Abstract

Jatiluhur Formation in the area of Cileungsi River was a shallow marine environment based on the foraminiferas domination. Several previous published papers had suggested age variation of the Jatiluhur Formation. Paleobatimetry study based on small foraminiferas was expected to complete the Miocene evolution analysis of the region. Thirty sediment samples were picked systematically in a section line along Cileungsi River. The hydrogen peroxide preparation of sediment samples produced 57301 small foraminifera. There were 23276 planktonic foraminiferas and 34025 benthic foraminiferas.  To understand the paleobathimetry of this research area, we calculated the ratio of planktonic foraminifera and benthic foraminifera (P/B ratio).  The P/B ratio is betweeen 4,4% and 74,0%.  The ratio suggests that the paleobathimetry of Jatiluhur Formation is Inner Neritic Zone - Upper Bathyal Zone.

Abstract

The research area is part of the Java Sea located in the northern part of Central Java. Java Sea is surrounded by three large islands. Therefore, its condition becomes depressed because of the contribution of water and the sediment from the three islands. The purpose of the study is to determine the biofacies and ecological conditions of the research area based on small benthic foraminifera assemblages. The small benthic foraminifera are unicellular sea shell animals that live on or within the sediment of the seabed. Its life is severely influenced by the environment so that the foraminifera can be used as environmental indicators. Quantitative analysis was carried out on 32 sedimentary samples by collecting of 0.125 mm benthic foraminifera on each one gram of dried samples. Based on the cluster analysis, the research area is divided into 4 biofacies i.e. Biofacies I (Littoral Zone-Inner Shelf Zone), Biofasies IIa (Inner Shelf Zone), Biofacies IIb (Littoral Zone-Inner Shelf Zone) and Biofacies III (Inner Shelf Zone). Furthermore, the range diversity index value of all biofacies is 0. 7 – 1.1. It can be concluded that the all biofacies and diversity index value shows the research area is shallow sea with medium stress to highly stress ecology.Key words: small benthic foraminifera, biofacies, diversity index, shallow sea, ecology, northern Central Jawa waters

Abstract

Arafura Sea is influenced by several climatic dynamics, it is also a part of the coral triangle that provides most of marine organism diversity of the world. Therefore, this area is an important  waters that impact the climatic dynamic so its paleoceanographic changes need to be understood. For that, we analyzed the foraminiferal PB ratio from marine sediment core ARAFURA-24 with a core length of 179 cm, collected from 47.4 m water depth, combined with that of Aru-07, taken from 276 m water depth (core length 152 cm). Both sediment cores were collected from the Arafura Sea using a gravity corer on board Geomarin III. ARAFURA-24 was sub-sampling in every 20 cm interval, while Aru-07 had been prepared in every 10 cm interval. PB Ratio values from ARAFURA-24 and Aru-07 ranged from 0,56% - 7,43% and from 29,89% to 82,66%, respectively. The age model was reconstructed by 14C radiocarbon dating derived from organic sediment, combined with tie points of PB ratio records. The result indicates that ARAFURA-24 has been sedimented since the last 9.7 kyr BP. PB ratio records reveal three maximum sea level rises, which are before 7.4 kyr BP, at 5.86 kyr, and after 3 kyr BP (approximately at 2 kyr BP at Aru-07). From the age model reconstruction, sedimentation during the last 3 kyr BP was relatively slower than that in the older period. It can be concluded that the foraminiferal PB ratio during Late Holocene was not significantly impacted by sedimentation rate (hence detrital influence), in contrast, during Mid-Holocene detrital influence had more impact on the PB ratio record.

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractRecent measuring stratigraphic observation in Cikandung River has revealed the Late Pliocene stratigraphic and tectonic event. Research area is located in easter Bogor Trough. Previously, it was stated controversially pertaining to the stratigraphic relationship between Kaliwangu and Citalang Formations. The outcrop-based remark has never been explained, slightly intuitive. Making strike and dip measurements and stratigraphic analysis using tape and compass traverse were done to unveil the role of Plio-Pleistocene tectonic regime in stratigraphic-filling of the basin. Strike azimuths recorded from several locations of Citalang and Kaliwangu Formations show angular geometry and both of those sedimentary facies within formations indicate the significant and rapid change in depositional process. But interestingly, the angular geometry is only founded in the southern part of study area. To the north, angular relationship becomes parallel. This geometrical distribution implies the strong influence of tectonic regime in Late Pliocene interval. The evidence from outcrops observation conclude the unconformity between Citalang and Kaliwangu Formations. Keywords: Stratigraphic unconformity, Citalang and Kaliwangu Formations, Plio Pleistocene Tectonic
