Abstract

This article discusses the changes in the implementation of death rituals organized by ethnic Chinese in Padang city. Documents in the form of photos and bylaws of the death ritual procession, an interview, and observations at the funeral home, crematorium of the Chinese socio-cultural and funeral association Himpunan Tjinta Teman (HTT), Himpunan Bersatu Teguh (HBT), and the Chinese cemetery complex in Bukit Sin Tiong and TPU Bungus Teluk Kabung are the sources of this article. The article's findings show that the performance of death procession rituals is an important part that marks the identity of the deceased and the family left behind. The ethnic Chinese of Padang still carry out death rituals in the Chinese tradition because there is a death congregation in the city of Padang that serves as a forum for preserving and organizing this ancestral tradition. In its development, the tradition of the death ritual procession has changed with the times, especially in the use of symbols, the stages of implementing a shorter and more efficient ritual process, the choice of the cremation process as a result of technological findings and the shift in ritual meaning from generation to generation of Chinese. These changes occurred in line with the changing times and the reforms adopted by the two Padang Chinese death societies as well as changes in the Chinese generation itself.

Abstract

The 1998 Reformation Movement, which was led by students, was a social movement that had an impact on social and political changes in Indonesia in the following period. In the midst of the dryness of the study and writing of the history of the 1998 Reformation Movement, this paper will look at how the dynamics of students at the local level welcomed this movement through the eyes of local history. This study aims to describe the roots of the 1998 Reform Movement in Indonesia and then highlight the dynamics of students at the local level in West Sumatra in the 1998 Reform Movement. This study uses a historical research method consisting of four stages of activity in the form of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that West Sumatran students were highly sensitive to the socio-political problems that engulfed the Indonesian nation at that time. As intellectuals, students respond to this issue by holding meetings, free pulpits, and holding demonstrations to criticize the government's policies and attitudes which are considered slow in solving the nation's problems. To facilitate coordination and consolidation of the movement, students formed the West Sumatera Student Communication Forum (FKMSB), which later became an important forum in gathering the strength of the students movement in West Sumatra during the transition period.

Abstract

This research discusses floods in the city of Bengkulu as an initial overview. The cosmology of Bengkulu is closely related to myths about rivers. Rivers are believed to have both negative and positive impacts on human activities, one of which is in the form of flood disasters. Bengkulu is a river-crossing city, which increases the level of flood danger. This study aims to explain the cosmological views of the Bengkulu community regarding the water environment and analyze several factors that have caused sustained floods in Bengkulu from 2008 to the present. This research is a qualitative study using historical methods. Qualitative research produces in-depth descriptive data. The historical research process involves four stages: heuristic (data search and collection), source criticism, interpretation (interpretation of historical facts or evidence), and historiography (historical writing). The data collection techniques used include archival studies and literature reviews. The results of the research show that the Bengkulu community has a number of local wisdom regarding how to maintain harmony with nature and the consequences/warnings of environmental destruction. The research also found that geographical factors in Bengkulu are the main cause of floods, while the utilization of natural resources (coal mining and deforestation) and population growth have resulted in the increasing intensity and impact of periodic floods.

Abstract

This article explains how the ethnic Chinese of Padang maintain the continuity of the death procession in Chinese culture. This article uses a historical approach by utilizing sources in the form of Dutch period documents, organizational documents of Himpunan Tjinta Teman (HTT) and Himpunan Bersatu Teguh (HBT), newspaper news and literature studies on the death processions of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia and outside Indonesia, as well as observations and interviews with HBT and HTT funeral administrators. These sources are used to find facts related to the death processions carried out by ethnic Chinese and the existence of HBT and HTT as institutions organizing Padang Chinese funeral processions. Furthermore, the existing facts are analyzed using historical and ethnographic approaches. The findings of the article show that the ethnic Chinese of Padang still carry out and preserve the implementation of the Chinese cultural death procession in an organizational forum. In this case, the organization's function as the organizer of the death procession for Padang Chinese is the key to the survival and existence of the organization itself. Various Chinese cultures preserved and inherited in the HTT and HBT organizations, including the culture of death, are essential in forming self- and collective identity and solidarity of Chinese community groups in the city of Padang.
