Abstract

This study aims to explore the the altruistic-integrated Samawa local wisdom in Sumbawa’s Scout Movements as a model of character education. This research used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. The data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentary studies. The data analysis technique used the Miles and Huberman model with the following stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings indicate that the Samawa cultural values are inextricably linked to scout education. Samawa’s indigenous cultural values, which include kerik salamat (abundance of gratitude and faith), to and ila (knowledge and shame), concern for the nation and homeland, mutual values (togetherness), self-care, pamendi and penyadu (obedience to a code of conduct) are closely related to five altruistic characteristics, namely empathy, belief in a just world, social responsibility, internal locus of control, and low egocentrism. These findings indicate that Samawa’s indigenous wisdom, when combined with altruistic components, plays a significant role in learning, both in formal and non-formal education settings. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that various scouting activities, which were accompanied by the cultivation of the noble values of the Samawa culture, were effective in increasing students’knowledge about scouting. The results of the research analysis can serve as a guide for stakeholders interested in enhancing students’ character qualities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) aim to integrate character education into daily student life, yet the role of peer interactions in shaping moral development remains underexplored. This study investigates how peer relationships support or hinder character formation in a contemporary pesantren context. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed at Pondok Modern Ponorogo. The quantitative phase involved 212 students completing a validated Likert-scale questionnaire assessing three dimensions: Peer Support, Collaborative Learning, and Moral Challenges (Cronbach’s α = 0.926). The qualitative phase included semi-structured interviews with 15 purposively selected students to explain the patterns found in the survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Survey findings revealed generally high levels of peer support and collaborative learning, alongside substantial exposure to moral challenges such as peer pressure, gossip, and conformity. Interviews explained how peer interactions reinforce religious practice, emotional resilience, and teamwork, but also revealed experiences of exclusion, stress, and ethical ambiguity. Students identified both positive and negative peer influences as central to their character development. Peer interactions in pesantren function as a double-edged force: they can promote moral growth through encouragement and collaboration but can also undermine integrity when negative norms dominate. Structured peer mentoring, accountable group work, and ethical reflection sessions are recommended to harness peer influence constructively. This study offers actionable strategies for educators seeking to embed character education within Islamic boarding school life through context-sensitive, peer-driven approaches.

Abstract

The formation of a compassionate character in the younger generation faces serious challenges amidst the flow of individualistic modernity. Islamic boarding schools as informal educational institutions have transformative potential that has not been systematically analyzed, especially in the context of cultural and religious pluralism. This study aims to uncover and analyze the construction of the informal educational ecosystem of the SPMAA Denpasar Islamic Boarding School, Bali, in forming a compassionate character in students through community service activities. The study used a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus group discussions, and documentation of 11 purposively selected informants, during the period August–November 2025. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, following the stages of data reduction, data display, and concluding, with triangulation of sources and methods. The study identified a transformative ecosystem comprising nine integrated elements. The main findings show that the 24-hour total immersion architecture with an allocation of 65% informal character education (tadib) to 35% academic (talim), combined with community service as an authentic character laboratory in the context of Balinese plurality, is a dominant factor in the internalization of the value of compassion for others holistically and sustainably. The character transformation that occurs is ontological, marked by a shift in students' lives from a materialistic to an altruistic orientation. This research contributes to the development of the theory of the informal education ecosystem in Islamic boarding schools. It provides a practical model for cross-cultural character formation relevant to Non-Formal Education in pluralistic Indonesia.
