Abstract

This study examined the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on eighth-grade students’ problem-solving skills in science learning, particularly on the topic of the human digestive system. A quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design was employed. The sample consisted of two classes selected through purposive sampling: one experimental class taught using the PBL model and one control class taught using conventional instruction. Data were collected using an essay test administered as pretest and posttest, supported by observation sheets and a student response questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that students taught using the PBL model achieved significantly higher problem-solving skills than those taught using conventional methods. In addition, the implementation of the PBL model was categorized as very well implemented, and students showed very positive responses toward the learning process. These findings suggest that the Problem-Based Learning model is effective and feasible to improve students’ problem-solving skills in science learning and can be recommended as an alternative instructional approach in junior high school science classrooms.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Students' low learning outcomes in science are often associated with instructional approaches that provide limited opportunities for active participation and collaborative learning. The Team Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model has been widely recognized as an effective strategy for promoting student engagement and improving academic achievement. This study aimed to examine the effect of the TGT cooperative learning model on eighth-grade students' learning outcomes in the topic of light. A quasi-experimental research design employing a nonequivalent pretest–posttest control group design was used. The participants were selected through purposive sampling from seventh-grade classes at a public junior high school, with 25 students assigned to the experimental group and 25 students to the control group. Data were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups (p = 0.022 < 0.05), indicating that students who learned through the TGT cooperative learning model achieved significantly better learning outcomes than those who received conventional instruction. These findings demonstrate that the TGT cooperative learning model is an effective instructional approach for improving eighth-grade students' learning outcomes in the topic of light.

Abstract

The implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka emphasizes student-centered learning, requiring learners to be more active, independent, and capable of utilizing digital technology in the learning process. However, students' scientific literacy remains low, as indicated by the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, while their understanding of local ethnoscientific knowledge is still limited. This study aimed to develop a scientific literacy-based electronic student worksheet (E-LKPD) integrating ethnoscience for junior high school science learning on the topic of temperature, heat, and thermal expansion. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, comprising the Analyze, Design, and Development stages. The product was evaluated through validity and practicality tests involving three expert validators, five science teachers, and 32 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Padang. Data were collected using validity and practicality questionnaires and analyzed using the Cohen's kappa coefficient. The results showed that the developed E-LKPD achieved a validity coefficient of 0.85, indicating very high validity, while the practicality coefficients were 0.93 from teachers and 0.87 from students, both categorized as very practical. These findings indicate that the developed scientific literacy-based E-LKPD integrating ethnoscience is valid and practical for supporting junior high school science learning on the topic of temperature, heat, and thermal expansion.
