Abstract

Verb aspects in the form of -teiru in Japanese is a category that is still common to be discussed as the result of meaning classification that is prompted. This article tries to explore the aspect relations in -teiru form toward negation to see the change of meaning that is produced. This way, the writer recommends the aspects classification of -teiru when it is present with a negation constituent in clause construction. The object of this research is the verb form -teiru in Japanese, the data are taken from Konotoha corpus in collecting the data, the writer used several keywords including -teiru, -teinai, -teita, -teinakatta, -teimasu, -teimasen, -teimashita, and -teimasendeshita. The aspect analysis of -teiru in this research refers to a theory that is explained by Nitta (1995) who classified the Japanese -teiru meaning in four categories, including: ugoki no saichuu ‘continuity of action’, kekkajoutai no jizoku ‘continuity of result state’, kurikaeshiteki jizoku ‘repeated continuity’, and keiken-kiroku ‘experience-note/memory’. Based on the data analysis, it shows that the presence of negation in both past and non-past can generate -teiru form which is later classified into two, they are perfective and imperfective. Those that are categorized as perfective aspect are the presence of negation on aspect meaning of -teiru within category kekkajoutai no jizoku. While the imperfective aspect occurs during the presence of negation within categories ugoki no saichuu, kurikaeshiteki jizoku, and keiken-kiroku.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between the honorific expressions of kenjougo with the uchi-soto concept and the form of subtitle translation in the Shimbun Kisha drama (The Journalist) in 2022. This study uses a qualitative and descriptive method with the honorific theory of kenjougo proposed by Iori (2001). The data sources used in this study were taken from oral and written data contained of kenjougo expressions in the Shimbun Kisha drama episodes 1-4. The data is obtained from Netflix with a duration of 45 to 60 minutes for each episode. The results of the study show that the form of kenjougo expression that appears most often in the Shimbun Kisha drama is a special verb form. Based on the relationship between participants and the concept of uchi-soto, the study results also show that the use of the expression kenjougo tends to be used in the concept of soto. In translation results in Japanese drama subtitles, the concept of uchi-soto are often not being considered by the translator. It can be seen in the use of several pronouns in Indonesian which are usually used in informal situations such as aku, kau, -mu and -ku. In addition, there are several changes in meaning made by translator. This is caused by the translator's lack of understanding of the uchi-soto concept. There are also cultural differences between the Japanese concept of uchi-soto and polite language in Indonesian. Indonesian does not recognize the honorific expression kenjougo so there are differences in perception in the translation process. The analysis of the form of honorific translation illustrates the complexity of the translation process which affects the equivalence of the translation. Keywords: audiovisual translation; kenjougo; uchi-soto concept.

This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the representation of the uchi-soto concept as a form of teineigo in Japanese and its translation into Indonesian. The uchi soto concept as an in-group and out-group concept has a very strong influence on language in Japanese society. Abstract

The Japanese language has many words that have more than one meaning. One of these words is the consonant verb ‘tadayou’. This study used a qualitative research method that aimed to identify the classification of the meaning of the consonantal verb tadayou and its interlanguage relationship. The data were taken from the NINJAL-LWP for TWC corpus and then analyzed using cognitive semantic theory. This research found that the basic meaning of tadayou consonant verbs is hovering. Then, tadayou consonantal verbs have eight expanded meanings, namely 1) float, 2) wander, 3) emit (scent, etc.), 4) (setting) atmosphere, 5) agitated, 6) unstable, 7) flinch, and 8) feel (feeling). However, the meanings of “agitated”, “unstable”, and “flinch” found no place of relevance nowadays. Outside of these classifications, one new meaning was found in this study, namely “to permeate”. In addition, there was an exception that abstract objects can be used for the meaning of “levitate”. The structural metaphorical expansion of the meaning of the consonantal verb tadayou was “wandering”. The ontological metaphorical expansion of meanings was “emit (scent, etc.)” and “atmosphere” (setting). Lastly, the metonymical expansion of meaning was “to float”, “to feel (feeling)”, and “to permeate”.

Abstract

Linguistics is unconsciously used in naming. Many human creativity in naming were done by applying linguistic theories. The study explores how Pokémon names were created based on linguistic theories. It is because more new names and terminologies have always been created following the development of technology and human civilizations. Literary works are one of human creativity that never ends. As a result, many new words are coined to be distinctive and memorable for the ‘market’. For thirty years, Pokémon has always updated their creativity in naming thousands of terminologies and Pokémon species. It makes scholars intrigued in understanding human capability in applying linguistic theories on forming their names. Phonological, graphemical as well as morphological theories were used in forming new Pokémon names. This is a descriptive-qualitative research. Data used were obtained from a webpage named Pokémon database. The data used in this research were limited to the first generation of the Pokémon game names. The research is expected to bring new horizons as the results of how Pokémon names were created. The results show that there are additional ways of naming literary characters phonologically and morphologically. The result shows consonant insertion and vowel deletion in addition to Balteiro’s (2013) theory and suffixation in addition to Mattielo’s (2013) theory used in forming Pokémon names. There is also certain sound used in order to create an archaic effect such as the ending -th.

Abstract

This study focuses on prosodic patterns, specifically intonation and stress, in student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during riddle game situations. The main objective of this research is to identify and analyze how ADHD and other factors influence prosodic patterns in English speech as a second language in a gaming context. The data source comes from an 11-year-old ADHD student with the initials D, who studies at Corner Stone School in Makassar. Data collection was conducted using an observation technique. Observations were carried out while playing a riddle game, with audio recordings used for analysis. The results indicate a tendency to emphasize the beginning of utterances, such as the words "Faster," "Help," and "Yes," which function as signals for the listener to focus on the core message. Additionally, the intonation pattern showed a tendency to use falling intonation, characterized by a high pitch at the beginning of the utterance and a lower pitch at the end. Interestingly, the prosodic patterns produced by the ADHD student in this study were not significantly different from those of non-ADHD students. This research suggests that although students with ADHD face challenges in attention and impulse control, the subject in this study could still adjust their prosodic patterns to convey messages effectively in specific contexts, such as in a riddle game setting.
