Abstract

This study informs the use of short story as media for motivating students improvement in reading that is tested in third semester B class at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu, based on research in EFL students classrooms state, a good indicator of improved motivation and interest in reading can be used by the short story (Ceylan,2016). This method in this research used experimental methods, based on the research conducted. The result showed there was an improvement in students motivation in reading. The mean score of the pre-test was 67,64. Then the mean score of the post-test is 94,11. There was an improvement in students scores between pre-test and post-test, it is improved 39,13%. It means the result of the test was satisfactory and show the best achievement. So, it can be concluded that improving students motivation in reading by using short stories as media is improved. It means that this technique can be used by other researchers to improve the same reading skill.

Abstract

Through social networking sites, many users or writers convey the strict message and statement in the platform of their twitter for whom those are addressed. This study was to analyze the use of language bias in worldwide twitter status; how its form and what is the underlying motive behind the words used. The researcher only focused on the “Trending Topic” from worldwide twitter status during February 2018 by taking up 25 twitter status as samples. The result of analysis obtained that there were six categories of language bias which are used in twitter statuses such as age, sex (gender), race, social class, and traits. Semiotically, all above upon deliver were visible strictly words, but all of the words subtle conveyed some important values for readers in terms of five categories above like to be an independent person, respect and not underestimate others. In short, by understanding the clues words of language bias in social media, readers can understand easily for whom the message or statement are addressed and not easy to give a negative response as users of social media.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the word class or known as part of speech from the chosen poems of Alan Alexander Milne. For that reason, five poems of him are analyzed: Wrong House, Furry Bear, If I Were King, The Mirror, dan Hoppity. This study applies descriptive qualitative methods. The procedure of the study covers several steps; dividing words into word class category, analyzing them statistically and reporting the result. Out of the five analyzed poems, there are three-word class categories; verb, noun, an adjective. The most dominant used word class in the poems is noun comprising of 105 in total . This is due to the fact that noun is what the students most widely learned as beginner learners. In these poems, the noun describes the meaning of the poems. Therefore; the categorizing of the part of speech is important to enrich vocabulary and ease the understanding of the poem. This analysis is to make the readers easier in understanding the word class using a poem by Alan Alexander Milne

Abstract

The two Presidents of U.S., Barack Obama (former) and Donald Trump displayed outstanding rhetorical craftmanship to drive the power of persuasion that gave them a victory. This study explores by taking up the 2009 Inaugural Speech of President Barack Obama and Donald Trump in 2016 as the target of stylistic analysis. To achieve this objective, this study analyzes the oral communication by corncerning on the content of speeches and how it was carried out as well. In order to identify the “what” and “how” questions will be formulated through research questions; what promise and requests are made, how does intertextuality strengthen the speech, what are the lexical features and what are the reference of politically loaded pronouns in the speech. The result of this study showed that Obama’s inaugral speech style is more communicative, evocative and its message conveyed orderly. While, Trump’s style is more conversationally, but it was able to awaken audiences through huge topics are delivered, for instance American first, transfering power, nation etc.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the construction of rape among underage perpetrators (14 to 17 years). The design of this research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The results of the study found that boys who were involved in rape cases could interpret rape in 3 forms, namely: as forced sex, consensual sex and deviant solidarity in boys' friendship groups. Overall, the construction they built illustrates the strong existence of patriarchal culture in rape cases involving perpetrators under 18 years of age. This is reflected in the form of domination, oppression, and victim blaming. In conclusion, the role of patriarchal culture in rape and injustice against women. Abstract

Pemberdayaan kepada masyarakat merupakan bagian dari sistem pendidikan tinggi termasuk perguruan tinggi Islam yang termasuk dalam tridharma perguruan tinggi yang meliputi pengajaran, penelitian dan pemberdayaan kepada masyarakat. Penanam pohon memiliki manfaat bagi kelangsungan hidup berbagai makhluk hidup yang ada. Pesatnya pembangunan di wilayah Betungan ini menyebabkan banyak pohon yang ditebang. Dengan demikian panas bumi meningkat serta jumlah pasokan air dalam tanah semakin berkurang. Oleh karena itu melalui kegiatan KKN dalam Program kerja Menanam Pohon ini mampu menyadarkan masyarakat akan pentingnya pohon atau tumbuhan di sekitar kita. Dengan menanam pohon di sekitar perkotaan dapat menyerap polutan tertentu dan menyaring debu yang banyak kita temukan di udara Kota Bengkulu Khususnya daerah Perum Griya Betungan Asri Kelurahan Betungan ini. Kegiatan menanam pohon ini berhasil dilaksanakan di tiga lokasi berbeda guna menjalankan Program Kerja Kuliah Kerja Nyata Mahasiswa Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu, ada sebanyak 50 bibit Pohon yang berhasil ditanam. Kegiatan ini dilakukan sebagai bentuk kepedulian lingkungan yang difokuskan pada lokasi KKN mahasiswa KKN yaitu di Kelurahan Betungan, Kota Bengkulu. Kata Kunci: pemberdayaan, pohon, alam

Abstract

Progam merdeka belajar kampus merdeka (MBKM) adalah salah satu program yang diselengarakan oleh Kemdikbud. Program kampus mengajar merupakan salah satu program dalam program merdeka belajar kampus mengajar. Merdeka memiliki tujuan untuk mengajar membantu teknologi, dan membantu administrasi sekolah dan guru. Salah satu sekolah yang menjadi sasaran dari program kampus mengajar adalah SMP Negeri 3 Badar, Desa Jonggar Kecamatan Ketambe Kabupaten Aceh Tenggara di Provinsi Aceh. Pada progam kampus mengajar ini mahasiswa yang tunjuk untuk untuk mengikuti program memiliki tanggung jawab dalam membantu pihak sekolah dalam proses Berliterasi, Numerasi, membantu adaptasi terhadap teknologi, dan membantu administrasi sekolah. Selain itu, mahasiswa kampus mengajar memiliki tanggung jawab dalam memperbaiki karakter siswa-siswi dan meningkatkan minat belajar siswa selama masa pandemi. Program Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) adalah salah satu program yang diselenggarakan oleh Kemendikbud.Program Kampus Mengajar 3 tahun 2022 berfokus pada Literasi,Numerasi,Administrasi dan Adaptasi Teknologi siswa yang dilakukan di sekolah terdampak dan tertinggal. Tujuan kegiatan Kampus Mengajar yaitu (1) Mengetahui faktor permasalahan rendahnya minat baca siswa di sekolah  (2) Meningkatkan budaya Literasi dan Numerasi di sekolah (3) membantu Administrasi sekolah (4) Mahasiswa memiliki tanggung jawab dalam memperbaiki karakter siswa dan minat belajar siswa selama masa pandemi ini. Subjek yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini ialah seluruh siswa SMP Negeri 3 Badar ,Kecamatan Ketambe,Kabupaten Aceh Tenggara,Provinsi Aceh disebabkan rendahnya pemahaman terhadap kemajuan teknologi siswa-siswi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Observasi. Hasil Penelitian yaitu (1) dapat mengetahui penyebab rendahnya pemahaman siswa terhadap teknologi komputer (2) Peningkatan pemahaman teknologi komputer terhadap siswa-siswi SMP Negeri 3 Badar,Kecamatan Ketambe,Kabupaten Aceh Tenggara,Provinsi Aceh. Abstract

This paper presents the study of rhetorical moves on thesis abstracts of accounting students at the Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The motive of this research is to examine how far students' understanding is in using rhetorical moves in their thesis abstracts. Under the qualitative descriptive method, 20 abstracts are taken randomly based on the thesis abstract, which was being proofread at Language Center Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu, 2021. Data were further discussed in the light of rhetorical moves by Swales. Based on the results of the analysis, this study revealed different forms of rhetorical moves; the highest sequence and frequency on Move 3 (research method) and Move 4 (results) were 100% occurrences according to Jhon Swales' concept. Furthermore, move 2 (research aim) has a higher sequence and frequency, it was 80% occurrence. Unsimilar, move 1 (situating research) and Move 5 (conclusion) as the smallest sequence and are frequent due to the abstracts not correctly presenting some steps of rhetorical moves as proposed by Swales. To sum up, this study has set out the findings; mostly accounting students have followed the rhetorical moves in their thesis abstracts on Move 3 and Move 4. However, their understanding of Move 1 and 5 must be revised for generating better abstracts.

Abstract

ELT in literature is one form of teaching integration, which is considered effective way for learner motivation, and a positive atmosphere in learning language. This research presents the study of teaching integration by using poetry as a medium for enhancing students speaking performance. This aims to analyze how the students' performance in English speaking by using poem in literature. The qualitative descriptive method is employed towards research samples from 15 groups students at the Prose and Poetry coursework. Data collection techniques were taken by observing closely towards students' conversation activities by using poetry, which are further analyzed by using Hughes' speaking rubrics, such as fluency, details or understanding, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The results obtained that the use of poetry as a medium for conversation activity impacts on students' speaking performance, particularly vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. In short, this finding is a very interesting way, which can be widely offered in ELT program, such as basic English.

Abstract

Understanding the listening comprehension strategy plays important role for students successfull to upgrade their listening test and TOEFL score as well. This aims to investigate deeply the students’ strategies in overcoming listening comprehension problems. The descriptive qualitative method is applied toward the third semester students of English Education study program Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. This research took 51 students who have taken listening courseworks (listening 1 and 3). Data collection technique were conducted by giving questionnaires in the light of Rebbica’s theory (1993); direct and indirect strategies. The results of study showed there were some problems faced by the third semester students in conducting listening comprehension test, such as unfimiliar words, complex grammatical structure, lack of concentration, pronunciation, obscure form of speech, long answer question, and accents. Whilst, most of students used cognitive strategy in overcoming their problem in listening comprehension. To sump  up, students must to learn some listening strategies as an effort to anticipate their problems when conduct listening comprehension test.
