Abstract

This study explores the impact of language barriers on the educational experience of students in rural schools. In many rural areas, language differences between students and teachers can significantly affect learning outcomes, communication, and overall student performance. This research focuses on schools in rural regions where minority languages or dialects are spoken, and the medium of instruction is often a different language. Through interviews with teachers, students, and community members, this study aims to understand the challenges posed by language barriers, the coping strategies employed by teachers, and the support systems available to students. The findings suggest that language barriers contribute to academic difficulties, social isolation, and low self-esteem among students, but various interventions, such as bilingual education, community involvement, and teacher training, can help mitigate these challenges. This study highlights the need for tailored educational strategies and policy interventions to address language barriers in rural schools, ensuring more equitable access to quality education for all students.

Abstract

Abstract

Teaching English vocabulary to young learners is an essential component of early language education, serving as a cornerstone for building effective communication skills, fostering cognitive development, and enabling academic success. Studies on strategies teachers use and their perception on the effectiveness of the strategies they implement towards the teaching of vocabulary to young learners are still scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine the methods used by teachers to teach words/vocabulary to young students in English and to ascertain how these methods were perceived by the teachers themselves. A qualitative method was employed to seek answers. This study used interviews and observation as its instruments. Four teachers with a degree in English education who have been teaching young students in the language for more than a year made up the research participants. The results revealed that the teachers used games, pictures, memorizing techniques, translations, realia, action/mime/gesture, and songs. The teachers felt that various techniques were appropriate for teaching vocabulary to younger students since the teachers could combine more than two strategies in a single session. As a result, they used a variety of techniques and activities in their instructions to help young students enjoy studying English vocabulary.

Abstract

Academic stress is a common challenge among university students and may negatively affect psychological well-being and academic performance. Resilience plays a crucial protective role in helping students adapt and recover from academic pressure. This study aimed to examine the effect of mindfulness on resilience among students experiencing moderate to high levels of academic stress. A quantitative approach with a correlational–predictive design was employed, involving 250 university students from several universities in Indonesia, selected using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). Data were collected using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25), and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicated that mindfulness had a positive and significant effect on resilience (β = 0.673, p < 0.001), accounting for 45.3% of the variance in resilience. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on students with moderate to high academic stress and in positioning mindfulness as a key psychological predictor of resilience rather than merely a stress-reduction strategy. These findings provide practical implications for the development of mindfulness-based counseling and intervention programs in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study examines the kerje sara urang prohibition within the Gayo community's Belah Hakim clan, a customary rule forbidding intra-clan marriage, utilizing a qualitative method with an empirical juridical approach. The research combines normative analysis with direct field observation in Belah Hakim in habited areas of Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues. Primary data were gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model and triangulated for validity. The study found that the Belah Hakim community enforces this prohibition due to beliefs in shared lineage impacting health, its role in maintaining social harmony, fear of ancestral curses, and a desire to uphold religious values. Violators face parak (exile for six-months) and traditional fines, with more severe sanctions like jeret naru (permanent exile) for specific cases. From an ‘urf perspective, this prohibition is categorized as al-’urf al-fāsid because it lacks explicit Islamic legal basis and can lead to harmful social consequences such as family disintegration, social exclusion, and infringement on individual rights, while also risking shirk through beliefs in ancestral curses. This research highlights the conflict between customary norms and Islamic justice, advocating for a contextual Islamic legal approach to align customary law with maqāṣid al-sharī'ah.

Abstract

This study examines the historical background of the Chinese community in Banda Aceh, the current implementation of the Family Planning (FP) program, and how the community perceives and understands the program as one of the government’s public welfare initiatives. The research employed a qualitative approach using observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation as the primary data collection techniques. Ten married participants were selected through purposive sampling because they were considered capable of providing relevant and in-depth information in terms of specific characteristics, experiences, or knowledge relevant to family planning practices within the Chinese community. The findings reveal that the Chinese community in Banda Aceh perceives family planning not merely as a method to limit births, but as a strategy for navigating familial relationships and achieving enduring well-being. Many families view FP as an investment to enhance their quality of life, especially by ensuring children's education and household economic stability. This perspective reflects cultural values that emphasize careful future planning and the continuity of family businesses. Consequently, some participants prefer long-term contraceptive methods such as implants because they are considered practical and compatible with demanding work schedules in trade and business activities. The study also reveals that reproductive decisions are influenced by religious teachings, ancestral traditions, and social environments. Buddhist and Confucian beliefs generally support responsible parenting and do not prohibit birth regulation. However, traditional expectations regarding lineage continuity, especially the preference for sons, still shape reproductive decisions among many families.
