Abstract

This This descriptive qualitative study aims to explore the listening difficulties experienced by participants in the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI) in Jambi Province, as well as their learning needs. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 68 participants who had taken the UKBI at the Jambi Provincial Language Canter, with 25 transcripts analysed in depth using a thematic analysis framework. The findings indicate that listening skills represent the primary challenge, involving multidimensional difficulties that encompass cognitive-affective processes (focusing attention and regulating anxiety), stimulus characteristics (audio speed, dialectal diversity, lexical complexity, and recording quality), and participant-contextual factors (language background and test environment conditions). A gap was revealed between the preparation undertaken by participants and their actual needs, with participants recommending the development of a preparation book that includes varied practice questions, detailed explanations, practical and concise materials, strategic tips, as well as digital and audio access. This study contributes to the development of a framework for exploring listening difficulties and provides practical implications for the development of UKBI preparation materials that are more responsive to the needs of participants in regions with high linguistic diversity.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to describe how active and passive sentence constructions are built in the Karo language, with a focus on syntactic construction patterns. This research is important because the morphological and syntactic systems of the Karo language differ from other regional languages in Indonesia, requiring in-depth research to add new data to regional language linguistic research and regional language preservation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from three native speakers of Karo aged between 20 and 50 years old who live in Berastagi subdistrict, North Sumatra, to provide research data in the form of active Karo sentences and passive Karo sentences. The data collection techniques used in this study were interviews, recordings, and transcriptions using the ELAN application. The research analysis model used was the Miles & Huberman (1984) model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion formulation. Source triangulation was used for data validity. The findings of the analysis on the construction of active sentences in the Karo language show that the agent is the subject, the verb is the predicate, and the patient is the object. Active sentences have verbs with the prefixes n- and m-. There are syntactic patterns such as SVO (Subject-Verb-Object), VSO (Verb-Subject-Object), and VOS (Verb-Object-Subject) in the formation of active sentences in the Karo language. Then, passive sentence constructions have the patient as the subject, the verb as the predicate, and the prepositional phrase as an optional object. In passive sentences in the Karo language, there are SVPP (Subject-Verb-Prepositional Phrase) and VPPS (Verb-Prepositional Phrase-Subject) patterns. Passive sentences are distinguished by the prefix i- and the infix i-...-i. The results of this study will contribute to the preservation of the Karo language as part of Indonesia's linguistic and cultural diversity and enhance research on regional linguistics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the lexical similarity of ten regional languages in Indonesia, namely Jambi Malay (jax), Kerinci (kvr), Minangkabau (min), Banjar (bjn), Mentawai (mwv), Sasak (sas), Javanese (jav), Toba (tob), Angkola (akb), and Mandailing (btm), along with Indonesian (ind) as a lingua franca; the genetic status of the regional languages; and the separation times among the regional languages. Data were collected through field observations at ten locations, with three informants per language, gathering 257 glosses from core (L1), nature (L2), general (L3), and cultural (L4) vocabulary. The analysis was conducted in three stages: first, synchronic lexical similarity was calculated using the Jaccard method; second, genetic relationships were analyzed through lexicostatistics based on L1 and L2; third, glottochronology was used to estimate language separation times among the regional languages. The results indicate that no language pairs share high similarity; most fall into the low-to-moderate similarity category. Lexicostatistical analysis reveals that core languages (jax, kvr, min, and bjn) and peripheral languages (tob, akb, and btm) form distinct genetic families, while mwv is the most lexically isolated language. Estimates of separation times indicate that core languages have a more recent lineage, while other languages such as mwv, jav, and tob show earlier divergence periods. These findings confirm that geographic proximity does not always correlate with linguistic relationships and suggest the need to revise the classification of Indonesian languages available in online databases, particularly the position of mwv, which should be reclassified as part of the Barrier Island language group rather than part of the Sumatran group. This study also highlights the importance of using primary data in language documentation to provide a more accurate map of linguistic evolution for regional languages in the archipelago.

Abstract

The way media represent female perpetrators can reveal the extent to which gendered norms and expectations influence news reporting in Indonesia. The way news is framed can shape public perception of female criminals. This study aims to examine how female perpetrators are represented through social actor choices in Indonesian digital crime news. It employs a Critical Discourse Analysis approach using the Social Actor Network framework introduced by van Leeuwen. The data source of this study is the digital media detikcom. The corpus consists of 20 criminal news texts published in 2025-2026. The findings of this study show that female perpetrators in Indonesian digital media are represented through the strategies of Classification, Activation, and Exclusion. The gender identity of female criminals is highly foregrounded in news texts through the use of Classification. Through Activation, criminal acts committed by women are made explicit without the use of linguistic hedging. Exclusion is used to remove actors from the text, though its impact is not severe since female perpetrators are clearly identified elsewhere in the same texts. These strategies position female criminals as deviant social actors in Indonesian crime news, as their behavior is judged against prevailing gendered norms. Theoretically, this study reveals the linguistic mechanisms underlying the representation of female perpetrators through the Social Actor Network in the context of Indonesian digital media. Accordingly, media outlets in Indonesia need to reflect on how their linguistic choices shape the gendered representation of female perpetrators.
