Abstract

This study explores the attitudes and valorization of languages among Indonesian engineering students at Cendikia Abditama University. Employing a qualitative research design, the study gathered data from 70 students through questionnaires, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 10 participants to gain richer perspectives. A descriptive analytical approach was used to interpret the findings, revealing a predominantly positive attitude toward English, Indonesian, and heritage languages. This demonstrates a nuanced balance between cultural pride, national identity, and the global opportunities associated with these languages. The research highlights that while many students value all three languages equally, others exhibit a preference for one language over the others, depending on their immediate academic, professional, or personal aspirations. These variations reflect the dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and global competitiveness in shaping language attitudes. The findings underline the critical role of educational policies in supporting linguistic diversity and fostering inclusive learning environments. By integrating students’ linguistic backgrounds into educational curricula, institutions can enhance learning experiences and promote multilingual competence. Such approaches can help prepare students for the challenges of a globalized world while maintaining their cultural roots, thereby contributing to more comprehensive and meaningful educational practices. This study emphasizes the significance of aligning language education with students' diverse needs and aspirations.

Abstract

This study explores Toulmin Argument Patterns (TAP) in argumentative essays by Asian EFL learners, focusing on gender and topic-based comparison. Using an adapted Toulmin model, it analyses argument components, claims, data, counter-arguments, and rebuttals, from the ICNALE corpus on topics "smoking" and "part-time job". Indonesian female learners constructed higher-quality arguments with comprehensive rebuttals, whereas their male counterparts relied more on basic elements. Among Chinese learners, gender differences were minimal, with both genders showing balanced TAP use, reflecting structured critical-thinking education. Familiar topics like "part-time job" led to more complex arguments, while less relatable topics like "smoking" resulted in weaker argumentation. Cultural factors also influenced argument quality, with Confucian-influenced education fostering consistency among Chinese learners and diverse educational practices leading to variability in Indonesian learners. These insights can inform curriculum design by encouraging the integration of culturally relevant and gender-responsive writing tasks that support students' critical thinking and argumentative skills. Future research should expand to broader linguistic and cultural contexts to refine TAP-based pedagogical strategies and deepen understanding of argumentative competence in EFL settings.

Abstract

Rhetorical moves purposes to examine the basic structures of research articles, while meta discourse markers are elements to construct and to establish ideas and arguments. This study compares rhetorical moves and the function of meta discourse markers in research articles abstracts of different academic disciplines published in reputable indexed journals. This study employs (Pho, 2008)’s five-move analysis and the classification of meta discourse marker proposed by (Dafouz-Milne, 2008) as the research framework. The writer took five Indonesian Scopus Q1 and Q2 indexed journals from different academic disciplines. Those are Indonesian Journal Science and Technology (IJoST), Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL), Journal on Mathematics and Education (JME), Studia Islamika and Forest and Society.  The results show that in terms of rhetorical move of abstracts, M2 and M4 became the moves which occur in all journal abstracts. In terms of meta discourse markers, all journal abstracts employ logical markers and code glosses. Sequencers, topicalisers, and illocutionary markers are used in small numbers, while reminders and announcements are not be found in any abstracts. The findings could help students and writers to produce abstracts that fulfill the requirements to be published in Scopus indexed journals.

Abstract

YouTubers, content creators, or vloggers link in some way to influence their viewers. Therefore, the use of creative languages and a good linguistic approach is crucial to convey the content of the videos. Deictic expression is a common and a universal feature in regular conversation as well as in written productions. Deixis features a word or a phrase that points out people as person deixis, time as temporal deixis, or place as spatial deixis. This study analyzes and compares the use of person deictic expressions from six videos taken from three Indonesian male food vloggers and three Indonesian female food vloggers who have the most subscribers. The findings show that there is a difference between Indonesian male and female food vloggers. While Indonesian male food vloggers are mostly use informal person deictic expression gue (English: I, informal style), Indonesian female food vloggers use formal-polite person deictic expression aku, saya (English: I, formal style). They also use kita (English: inclusive-we) to minimize the distance between them and the viewers, indicating that they are having the same experiences. The findings could help the readers and the YouTube viewers to understand the function of person deictic expression that is to place the food vloggers at the center of the situation

Abstract

Figurative language analysis in a novel involves examining the author's use of various literary devices and techniques to enhance the narrative, evoke emotions, and create a deeper understanding of the text. This analysis goes beyond the literal interpretation of words and delves into the layers of meaning and imagery that contribute to the overall richness of the story. The purpose of this study is to seek the types of figurative language found in the novel The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini and to analyze their meanings. The Kite Runner is a historical fiction novel, sets in Afghanistan in the 1970s with the social and political conditions of the Soviet invasion and the rise of the Taliban dictator. Using descriptive qualitative content analysis, this study reveals that there are 72 sentences containing figurative language and there are nine types of figurative language. Those are metaphor (15%), simile (32%), personification and, synecdoche (9%), metonymy (13%), both paradox and symbol (4%), hyperbole (7%), and apostrophe (3%). The findings show that the dominant type of figurative language in the novel The Kite Runner is simile.  This study sheds light on the author of the novel The Kite Runner effective use of figurative language to enhance the narrative, convey emotions and enrich the readers’ experiences. Thus, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of figurative languages found in one of the great historical fictions.

Abstract

Metacognition, the reflection on thinking processes, plays a crucial role in cognitive activities. This study delves into metacognitive strategies employed during post-editing in the translation process, particularly focusing on English-Indonesian translation through the application of think-aloud protocols (TAP). The investigation encompasses planning, monitoring, and evaluation as interconnected phases of metacognitive strategies. A qualitative case study method is employed, with a university student as the participant. Data analysis involves coding and categorizing using a thematic analysis approach, based on the metacognitive strategies framework. The findings show that the participant employes the components of planning such as evaluate the necessity of post-editing, applied knowledge on the specific post-editing cases, and identified the goal and the necessity for having specific post-editing, the components of monitoring such as using facts and instruction learned previously, making changes for a better translation product, and self-monitoring of progress, and elements of evaluating, such as deep level revising to produce better post-editing, and taking action to collect extra information. Pedagogical implications highlight the potential for enhancing learning experiences and improving translation skills through explicit instruction, modeling and systemic strategy training. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of metacognitive flexibility, cultural influences, and adaptive strategic behavior in post-editing, shaping a roadmap for learners to navigate challenges and continually refine their approach.
