Abstract

The typological analyses on word-order typology of Minangkabaunese have been becoming topics of typological studies in some aspects, but those which are based on the markedness theory are still limited. Therefore, the analysis on markedness values of word-order typology of Minangkabaunese is linguistically meaningful. This article, as the development and further discussion of a part of the results of a research conducted in 2020/2021, analyzes and discusses the markedness values of word-order typology of Minangkabaunese. There are two questions to be answered in this paper: (i) what are the word-word order typology of Minangkabaunese?; and (ii) what is the markedness value of each word-order typology of Minangkabaunese? The data analysis and discussion are based on the related theories of word-order typology and markedness developed and used in Grammatical Typology. The data presented in this paper are the clause constructions which were collected by means of a descriptive-qualitative research and practically executed as of a field research in West-Sumatera and supported by a library study. The result of data analysis reveals that there are three productive patterns of grammatical constructions in Minangkabaunese identified as SVO, VOS, and OSV. However, there are only two patterns of the three grammatical-clause constructions that can be assigned as the basic word-order typology in this local language, namely: SVO and VOS. Therefore, the basic clause constructions with SVO and VOS word-order are unmarked meanwhile those with OSV word-order are marked ones. Furthermore, the markedness value of SVO is higher than that of VOS. In hierarchy, the markedness value of the three productive grammatical constructions in Minangkabaunese can be formulated as: SVO < VOS < OSV. This grammatical-typological analysis contributes to the more specific description of grammatical properties of Minangkabaunese as one of main local languages in Indonesia. Abstract

Learning media is one of the most important components in the teaching and learning process. Without learning media, the teaching and learning process tends to be stiff and boring. The need for creative, interactive and innovative learning media is very important because the characteristics of today's students are very much different compared to previous generations. Generation Z, which is currently studying in tertiary institutions, is a generation that was born and grew up with digital technology. Conventional methods and media are no longer suitable for this generation. Therefore, teachers need to implement digital technology-based learning. This research aims to develop learning media based on Virtual Reality in the Introduction to Psycholinguistics course. The research method used is the Research and Development (RnD) research method with the ADDIE approach (Analysis, Designing, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The results show that Virtual Reality-based learning media is valid and practical to be used in Introduction to Psycholinguistics Class. Despite of the validity and practicality, some minor revisions still ne needed.

Abstract

Writing requires a complex skill, and thus students need to regulate themselves in employing the appropriate strategies to achieve good writing performance. The present research investigated Self-Regulated Writing (SRW) strategies used by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students. It contrasted the students' strategies related to the complex structure of the texts (i.e., paragraphs and essays) and students’ writing performance. The data information came from two separate sets of self-regulated learning strategy questionnaire, as well as writing outcomes of the students. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test were utilized to evaluate the data. The six dimensions of SRW strategies were extensively utilized in paragraph and essay writings. The six dimensions include motive, method, time, performance, physical environment, and social environment. Interestingly, the social environment dimension had the highest mean score, showing that the students needed assistance from their peers and available learning resources. Meanwhile, the motive dimension obtained the lowest mean in both paragraph and essay writings. Furthermore, the analysis showed no significant statistical difference in using SRW strategies in writing paragraphs and essays except in the method dimension. The difference in strategy use based on achievement was also not significant. The results indicate that the students applied similar SRW strategies in paragraph and essay writings regardless of their proficiency levels. Pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research are also further discussed in the article.

Abstract

Many studies have discussed the importance of technology in delivering feedback to students’ assignments since its deployment provides convenience, timeliness, rich information, asynchronous discussion, and social presence. However, the effectiveness of audio feedback has received very scant investigation in the context of higher education in Indonesia. To fill such an empirical void, this exploratory sequential mixed method probes the students’ perceptions towards the use of audio feedback. Thirty-two undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Bengkulu, Indonesia, majoring in Early Childhood and Studies and taking English as a compulsory subject, participated in this study. Three data collection techniques were deployed to triangulate the data. A questionnaire was distributed to examine students’ perceptions of audio feedback, followed by a freeform writing and semi-structured interview to draw more pictures of the students’ experiences of this feedback mode. The results show that even though all participants in this study had never received this type of feedback, most participants had positive perceptions of using audio feedback. They mentioned they got thorough, detailed, and personal feedback, so they felt engaged in the learning processes. This finding is expected to enrich the knowledge of the effectiveness of audio feedback and to encourage eager teaching practitioners to use it in their teaching processes, as it could increase students’ engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

The trend of topics in language education research is affected by how authors convince readers about the issues being discussed. However, the persistence of the topic is not based on the number of scholars who have conducted the research, for instance, collaborative writing topics, but it focuses more on the newness to be contributed to the advancement of knowledge by indicating research gaps. Therefore, this qualitative study, which is specified into genre analysis, aims to describe the strategies for indicating research gaps and the area of gaps that are still needed to be fulfilled in the research of collaborative writing. A corpus consisting of 20 research article introductions (RAIs) published in highly reputable journals with high-impact factors was compiled and subjected to analyze, respectively (i.e., using the frameworks of Lim, 2012 and Ewijk, 2018) the types of research gap strategies and the areas of gaps that have been focused on by the authors. The findings show that the strategy of stating the absence of a specific area in the research of collaborative writing is employed in a vast majority (45.45%). Besides, the area of impact is found as the promising area of gap (occurred 24 times) that the authors tend to focus on. The pedagogical implications of this study are also discussed in this article.

Abstract

Language use refers to the way speakers of a language use their language in different situations and contexts, including variations in written and spoken language. This research aimed to explore the dynamics of Bahasa Tansi use by the Sawahlunto community. It focused not only on language use at and outside but also on language use by children and the younger generation, as well as the language attitudes of the Sawahlunto people towards Bahasa Tansi. The research used a descriptive approach with data collection methods including Swadesh lists, questionnaires, and interviews with native Tansi speakers in Tansi Baru and Sikalang Village. The results showed that based on the lexical and phonological analysis of the Swadesh list, Bahasa Tansi was classified as a creole and was still not strong enough to be categorized as a language. These findings were derived from a comparative analysis of 206 words from the Swadesh list comparing Minangkabau and Bahasa Tansi. To this day, Bahasa Tansi is still used by the people of Sawahlunto in daily communication, with questionnaire results showing 86.8%. The community's positive attitude towards Tansi was also reflected in the questionnaire results, reaching 94%.
