Abstract

Using sentence types in a research article, including in the abstract section, should be considered by students since it functions to show the quality of  research writing. An abstract is a summary of a research article that highlights the points and purpose, and it helps readers determine whether the article is relevant to their research interests. Thus, as a response to the function of sentence types, this research aimed to examine the sentence types in the abstract section using a qualitative approach and content analysis. This research employed Brandon’s theory (2011) of sentence types to see what sentence types were written by English education students of UNP in their research article abstracts. Then, 20 research article abstracts were used as the data of this research retrieved from JELT UNP, and the data were analyzed using a checklist table as an instrument. According to the result, it was found that not all types of sentences were used in every abstract. Simple sentences were used more frequently (67.5%) than complex sentences (28.1%) in abstracts. Compound sentences (3.1%) and compound-complex sentences (1.2%) were less common. Finally, this research has pedagogical significance for a better comprehension of academic writing, especially concerning the language use of a research article.

Using mixed methods, this research analyzed the similarities and differences between the Minangkabau and Tansi languages and identify factors that influence maintenance and intutional maintenance. Ten data sources in this research came from the Tansi community in Tangsi Baru (Lembah Segar District) and Sikalang Village (Talawi District). In conclussion, Tansi is still widely and consistently used in homes and among family speakers. In addition, speakers actively teach Tansi to their children, indicating an awareness of language maintenance. Although initiatives such as language contests and local government support for language maintenance are present, they are still not systematic enough. Thus, maintaining the continuity of the Tansi language outside the family environment must continue to be done in order to maintain the Tansi language for the next generation.

Abstract

Following English rhetorical conventions in English academic texts, especially by non-native English authors, does not necessarily mean disregarding some rhetorical practices of their national language. Although investigating English RAs has largely been focused on how the textual structure of the section is written in English by native English speakers and non-native English speakers, there has a limited empirical attention so far related to the investigation of rhetorical differences between RA introductions written in English and those written in Indonesian. After a thorough genre-based investigation of 60 RAs published from 2019 to 2023 using the modified CARS model (Swales, 1990, 2004), this study has revealed that the use of each rhetorical style, including moves, steps, and patterns, in English and Indonesian RA introductions is different. The result indicates that although the moves and steps display a close affinity with the CARS model, we found higher use of Move 1, i.e., establishing a territory, in the language teaching RA introductions written in Indonesian than in English. On top of that, while international authors (IAs) established their niches adequately, Indonesian authors (Eng-FL) established their niches inadequately, seemingly due to the influence of their national language (Indonesian). Moreover, the Indonesian language not only affects the frequency of occurrence of the moves and steps but also contributes to the pattern deviations found in the English RA introductions written by the Indonesian authors. This study provides pedagogical implications for academic writing and insights for Indonesian authors to write English articles using English rhetorical styles.

Abstract

Many studies have discussed the importance of technology in delivering feedback to students assignments since its deployment provides convenience, timeliness, rich information, asynchronous discussion, and social presence. However, the effectiveness of audio feedback has received very scant investigation in the context of higher education in Indonesia. To fill such an empirical void, this exploratory sequential mixed method probes the students perceptions towards the use of audio feedback. Thirty-two undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Bengkulu, Indonesia, majoring in Early Childhood and Studies and taking English as a compulsory subject, participated in this study. Three data collection techniques were deployed to triangulate the data. A questionnaire was distributed to examine students perceptions of audio feedback, followed by a freeform writing and semi-structured interview to draw more pictures of the students experiences of this feedback mode. The results show that even though all participants in this study had never received this type of feedback, most participants had positive perceptions of using audio feedback. They mentioned they got thorough, detailed, and personal feedback, so they felt engaged in the learning processes. This finding is expected to enrich the knowledge of the effectiveness of audio feedback and to encourage eager teaching practitioners to use it in their teaching processes, as it could increase students engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

Writing requires a complex skill, and thus students need to regulate themselves in employing the appropriate strategies to achieve good writing performance. The present research investigated Self-Regulated Writing (SRW) strategies used by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students. It contrasted the students' strategies related to the complex structure of the texts (i.e., paragraphs and essays) and students writing performance. The data information came from two separate sets of self-regulated learning strategy questionnaire, as well as writing outcomes of the students. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test were utilized to evaluate the data. The six dimensions of SRW strategies were extensively utilized in paragraph and essay writings. The six dimensions include motive, method, time, performance, physical environment, and social environment. Interestingly, the social environment dimension had the highest mean score, showing that the students needed assistance from their peers and available learning resources. Meanwhile, the motive dimension obtained the lowest mean in both paragraph and essay writings. Furthermore, the analysis showed no significant statistical difference in using SRW strategies in writing paragraphs and essays except in the method dimension. The difference in strategy use based on achievement was also not significant. The results indicate that the students applied similar SRW strategies in paragraph and essay writings regardless of their proficiency levels. Pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research are also further discussed in the article.
