Abstract

Abstract This research has been carried out to improve the mathematics learning activity and by Realistic Mathematic Education (RME). This research was done in three cycles to the fourth grade students of the State Elementary School 27 in Ampenan in the academic year of 2006/2007. The result shows that to improve the learning activity, the implementation of RME should involve the following step: (1) the instruction has to begin with arousing motivation and apperception, (2) the students solve contextual problems with a very limited or without the teacher’s help, (3) the teacher presents the essential concept following the solution of the contextual problem, (4) the result of the students discussion has to be presented in front of the class by the students, and (5) the final step of the instruction has to be the making summary and  giving homework assignment. Keywords: RME, learning activity, and learning achievement

Abstract

Students show deficient understanding on fraction division and supporting that understanding remains a challenge for mathematics educators. This article aims to describe primary students’ understanding of partitive fraction division (PFD) and explore ways to support their understanding through the use of sequenced fractions and context-related graphical representations. In a design-research study, forty-four primary students were involved in three cycles of teaching experiments. Students’ works, transcript of recorded classroom discussion, and field notes were retrospectively analyzed to examine the hypothetical learning trajectories. There are three main findings drawn from the teaching experiments. Firstly, context of the tasks, the context-related graphical representations, and the sequence of fractions used do support students’ understanding of PFD. Secondly, the understanding of non-unit rate problems did not support the students’ understanding of unit rate problems. Lastly, the students were incapable of determining symbolic representations from unit rate problems and linking the problems to fraction division problems. The last two results imply to rethink unit rate as part of a partitive division with fractions. Drawing upon the findings, four alternative ways are offered to support students’ understanding of PFD, i.e., the lesson could be starting from partitive whole number division to develop the notion of fair-sharing, strengthening the concept of unit in fraction and partitioning, choosing specific contexts with more relation to the graphical representations, and sequencing the fractions used, from a simple to advanced form.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine eighth grade student problem-solving ability on number pattern material. This study was held academic year focused on assessing students learning styles. The methods used in this study were questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The results showed that class VIII students consisted of 26 students had visual learning styles, 24 students had auditory styles and 16 students had kinesthetic styles. Subjects taken in this study were 2 students from each learning style, then the subject was given a test to describe the number pattern material and conducted an interview. As a result, based on the analysis of the problem-solving ability stages, students with visual and auditory learning styles were able to reach the stage of understanding the question / problem, designing and choosing a solution strategy, and solving problems with a mathematical model, but have not yet reached the stage of re-checking the solutions obtained. On the contrary, Students with a kinesthetic learning style have been able to reach the stage of understanding the question / problem, but have not been able to reach the stage of designing and choosing a solution strategy, or solving problems with mathematical models, and even re-checking the solutions obtained. This shows that the problem solving ability of students with visual and auditory learning styles is better than students with kinesthetic learning styles.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the ability to solve math story problems reviewed from the learning style of grade VII students. The type of research used is descriptive research with qualitative approach. The sample class was selected using cluster random sampling techniques and obtained 32 students who were taken 25% of the population, the sample was randomly taken 8 students from each class. The samples obtained were given a study style questionnaire in order to classify the sample into visual, auditorial and kinesthetic learning style categories. The sample that was the subject of the interview and the subject given the test question was selected based on the three categories of study style, which was taken randomly 20% of the sample of each learning style. Students' ability to solve math story problems is reviewed from known learning styles through analysis of students' answers in solving number material story questions and based on interview results. The analysis technique used is descriptive statistical analysis. From the results of the study obtained: The ability to solve math story problems of students with visual learning style, auditory learning and kinesthetic learning is good criteria, less criteria, and less criteria.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the profile of implementation mathematics learning and sociomatematic norms in collaborative learning of algebraic material topic at VII-C SMPN 13 Mataram in the 2019/2020 academic year. Indicators of sociomathematic norms in this research are based on the ability to communicate mathematics and the social skills students in collaborative learning. The kind of research this is descriptive qualitative with instruments of data collection which used are the learning device which includes RPP, LLPD, observation sheet of sociomathematic norms in collaboration activities and interview guidelines. The subjects in this study were 30 students who had a category of positive belief in collaborative activities. There are 3 categories of positive belief, namely P1, P2 and P3. P1 subject has a positive belief in collaborative activities and has the ability to solve problems independently, many as 0 people. P2 subjects who have positive beliefs about the effectiveness of collaboration and have the ability to solve problems independently but sometimes need the help of a friend or teacher, many as 28 people. P3 subjects who have positive belief in collaborative activities and do not have the ability to solve problems independently or always need the help of a friend or teacher, many as 2 people. The research subjects had an average percentage of sociomatematic norms ˃ 56%, this means that these subjects had good mathematical communication skills and social skills.
