Abstract

One of the traditional medicines that is very popular with the public because it is affordable and easy to obtain in both traditional and modern markets is herbal medicine. Among the various types of herbal medicine circulating in the community, the one most frequently encountered is jamu carrying kencur rice. The safety of traditional medicinal products (herbal medicine) is a demand that has been put forward since the emergence of human health problems due to contamination by microorganisms, such as coliforms. Microbiological examination of water is very necessary to prevent contamination of water consumed by humans. This research aims to determine the contamination of coliform bacteria in the kencur rice herbal medicine in traditional markets in the Sukoharjo area. The method used in this research is the MPN (Most Probable Number) method which consists of two stages, namely the presumptive test and the confirmed test. The results showed that samples with codes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12 had an MPN value of 0/100 ml. Furthermore, samples with codes 3, 4, 9, and 10 show MPN values > 0/100 ml. Based on the research results, samples that meet good drinking water quality based on the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, are samples with codes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12, while samples with codes 3, 4, 9, 10 do not meet the requirements.

Abstract

Facial skin susceptible to oxidative stress due to free radicals can be prevented by increasing the amount of antioxidants. Bay leaf extract is known to have antioxidant activity, it can be formulated into a toner. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical quality and antioxidant activity of bay leaf extract toner. The method used was experimental, with four formulas of variations in the concentration of bay leaf extract addition, namely F0 (0%), F1 (1.5%), F2 (3%), and F3 (6%). The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol, and then tested for physical quality consisting of organoleptic, pH and viscosity, and antioxidant activity with the DPPH method. The results showed an extract yield of 12.58%. The best formula for bay leaf extract toner preparation was F2, with physical quality including liquid organoleptic, light brown color, the distinctive odor of bay leaf extract; pH 4.74; viscosity 3.81 cP; and IC50 of 46,090 ppm with a very strong antioxidant activity category. Conclusion, bay leaf extract has the potential to be a natural active ingredient in skin care products that is effective in protecting the skin from the effects of free radicals.

Abstract

Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals, playing a role in preventing degenerative diseases. Cinnamon has very strong antioxidant activity. Edible film can function as carriers of antioxidant compounds. This research was conducted to determine the physical quality and antioxidant activity of cinnamon extract mucoadhesive edible film. The research method used is quantitative experimental. There are four edible film mucoadhesive formulas with different concentrations of cinnamon extract added, namely 0% at F0, 5% at F1, 10% at F2 and 15% at F3. The test results for organoleptic F0 are clear white, odorless, thin, and sticky sheets, pH 7.54; thickness 0.026 mm; weight uniformity 30.93; water content 32.61%. The organoleptic test results for F1 are dark brown, have a typical cinnamon smell, are thin and non-sticky sheets, pH 6.78; thickness 0.063 mm; weight uniformity 30.52; water content 17.32%. The organoleptic test results for F2 are dark brown, have a typical cinnamon smell, are thin and non-sticky sheets, pH 6.21; thickness 0.073 mm; weight uniformity 24.53; water content 12.81%. The organoleptic test results for F3 are dark brown, have a typical cinnamon smell, are thin and non-sticky sheets, pH 6.29; thickness 0.08 mm; weight uniformity 15.42; water content 15.74%. The antioxidant activity was weak in F0, very strong in F1, F2, and F3.  Edible film mucoadhesive cinnamon extract in formulas F1, F2, and F3 produces good physical properties according to standards and has very strong antioxidant activity. The conclusion of this study shows that cinnamon extract can be formulated into Edible Film Mucoadhesive, as seen from its antioxidant activity in F3, with an extract concentration of 15%.

Abstract

Jamu is the name for traditional medicine from Indonesia. This liquid traditional medicine is made by boiling all the ingredients, then squeezing the juice and mixing it with boiled water. This simple process of making liquid traditional medicine can cause undesirable impacts, microbial contamination which can cause diseases such as Escherichia coli bacteria which can cause diarrhea. In Sukoharjo, in several areas, there are still many sellers of liquid traditional medicine selling their wares in the market. There is no information regarding the quality of this liquid traditional medicine. This research aims to determine microbial contamination in traditional medicinal liquids sold at the Sukoharjo Regional Market. Research methods include total plate count to determine bacterial contamination and yeast mold count to determine fungal contamination in the kencur rice liquid traditional medicine.  The results of calculating the total plate count showed that 3 samples exceeded the contamination limit with the highest total bacterial value of   Colony Forming Unit (CFU)/ml. The results of the research showed that from the calculation of yeast mold count, 9 samples exceeded the contamination limit with the highest total yeast mold value of  CFU/ml. This results can provide information to the public to increase awareness of consuming herbal medicine and to the local government to provide education to herbal medicine traders. There are still several traditional medicine quality standards that have not been observed in this study, so it is recommended that the quality of the types of microorganisms contamination, be further analyzed

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias bathracus L) can survive and be able to tolerate polluted water conditions. Lead metal naturally occurs in water and contaminates the organisms in it. Lead metal contamination in fish will cause poisoning and brain damage if it enters the human body's metabolism and accumulates in amounts that exceed the threshold. This research was conducted to determine the content of Pb metal in catfish meat sold at Bekonang Market, Sukoharjo. The method used in this research is a qualitative analysis using the K2CrO4 reagent and a quantitative analysis using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The results of the research with K2CrO4 reagent showed that samples A, B, C, D, and E were negative respectively. The average levels of lead (Pb) in catfish meat samples A, B, C, D, and E were -21.98 mg/Kg ± 0.140; -22.10 mg/Kg ± 0.035; -24.32 mg/Kg ± 0.107; -10.99 mg/Kg ± 0.191; and -24.36 mg/Kg ± 0.091. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the content is still below the threshold according to the requirements for lead (Pb) levels allowed by Republic of Indonesia Food and Drug Supervisory Agency Regulation Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Maximum Limit of Heavy Metal Contamination of 20 mg/kg.
