Abstract

Language in the regional regulations discourse of West Sumatra Province differs from other regulations in Indonesia. It is marked by the use of local language in the regulations aiming to strengthen local wisdom and values. The study of the local language and Minangkabau cultures in regional regulation explains the necessity of using local language in laws and regulations and the implementation of Law Number 22 of 1999 about regional government, authorities, and responsibilities of local governments in the fields of language and literature. Within a discourse analysis approach, this study identified the linguistic units of the local language in the West Sumatra Province’s special regional regulation (SRR) and examined how the local language carries and promotes local wisdom and values of Minangkabau people. The results of this study indicate that the words and phrases of local language in the SRR represents local wisdom values of Minangkabau people as shown in Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah, tanah ulayat, jua ndak makan bali gadai ndak makan sando, Adat Salingka Nagari, bajanjang naiak, batanggo turun, ganggam bauntuak, and sako pusako. The resistance of the local language in the SRR maintains local wisdom values that reflect the sociocultural life of the Minangkabau people.

Abstract

Time is one of the salient concepts in human life since we live and act in time. Thus, research investigating time is always intriguing yet perplexing. This study aims to describe the collocations of verbs with the most frequent lexical item for temporal concept, i.e., time. The present study also compared the collocations to those in Indonesian counterparts, that is verb + waktu. This is a corpus-driven study using two reference corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English for English data, and Leipzig Corpus Collection for Indonesian data. The association measure used to identify the verb collocates is Mutual Information (MI) and the results of collocates in both languages were compared. The result of the study shows that there are 15 most frequent verb collocates of time and waktu for both English and Indonesian, e.g., have, spend, take, membutuhkan, memanfaatkan, memerlukan, etc. Of all these collocates, there are some similarities and differences that can be mapped. The similarities are associated with basic mappings of time metaphor, e.g., TIME IS MONEY, TIME IS A RESOURCE, TIME IS A COMMODITY, and TIME IS MOTION. Despite the similarity, some differences are also identified which might be affected by limited number of verb collocates analyzed in the present study (e.g., TIME IS A FLEXIBLE OBJECT, TIME IS A CONTAINER, TIME IS A BEING, TIME IS A VICTIM). The results of the study can be used as a reference for teachers in teaching or designing teaching materials on time expressions or time metaphor.

Abstract

Children's storybooks play a crucial role in children's language development, thus demanding meticulous attention from authors in word selection and usage within the narrative. A comprehensive understanding of the morphological processes, particularly affixation, is essential for grasping the writing style. This study focuses on scrutinizing the morphological processes, particularly affixation, specifically the prefix ‘ber-’, on verbs. The analysis centers on the fundamental form and semantic formation. The dataset comprises all verbs prefixed with ber- sourced from a children's storybook titled "Cerita Negeri Tetangga: Kumpulan Dongeng Asia Tenggara" by Hapsari Hanggarini. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to present the data. The findings reveal four fundamental forms of verbs with the prefix ‘ber-’and seven semantic formations. The prevalent fundamental form constitutes free morphemes, with the dominant semantic formation reflecting active actions. These findings suggest that affixation processes in children's storybooks tend to remain straightforward, catering to concepts accessible to children.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative study that analyzes the frequency and collocations of deadjectival nouns that have suffixes {-ity} and {-ness} in English news. The data source is 100,000 English news sentences from 2023 retrieved from Leipzig Corpora Collection. The analysis was conducted with the assistance of AntConc. The results show that the suffix {-ity} tends to produce deadjectival nouns that dominantly appear in English news, while the suffix {-ness} tends to create a variety of nouns. In addition, the deadjectival nouns with the suffix {-ity} are more diverse in collocating, with 37 collocates, while the suffix {-ness} has 28 collocates. The suffix {-ity} collocates more frequently with grammatical words, forming grammatical collocation pattern type G1 in some of its collocates. In contrast, the suffix {-ness} is likely to collocate with other nouns and form compound words. Both suffixes tend to appear in nominal phrase constructions, as shown by the high occurrence of the conjunction ‘and’ according to the likelihood in AntConc statistics. This finding indicates that in sentence construction, both suffixes {-ity} and {-ness} frequently occur in coordinative form alongside with other nouns.

Abstract

Measure word is a group of words functions as a noun counter and complementing a numeral. Each language has a different set and types of measure words. Korean has a lot of measure words and it is used based on the semantic feature of the counted noun. This paper examines types of Korean measure words in a culinary-related text. Data were collected from recipes written in Korean. Then, Data were classified and analyzed to see the similarities and differences between those measure words. Our results showed that there are four types of Korean measure words. First, measure words that are standard measurement units (e.g geuraem 'gram' and litheo 'liter'). Second, measure words that are Korean traditional measurement units like geun. Third, measure words that came from measuring tools like byeong 'bottle' and keunsul 'spoon' and the last, measure words that are classifiers. In a phrasal structure, measure words placed after the numeral, and the noun is mainly placed before the numeral but it also can be placed after the measure words by adding a genitive particle -eui between the measure word and noun. Commonly-used measure words and classifiers that have one-to-one equivalent word in Indonesian will be easier to learn by learners from Indonesian background.
