Abstract

This study explores how expressive speech acts are used in the teen romantic comedy movie "To All the Boys: Always and Forever," directed by Michael Fimognari. Using Searle's theory of expressive speech acts and Yule's framework for direct and indirect speech acts, the study analyzes the female main character's speech acts through a descriptive qualitative approach. The study identifies few instances of expressive speech acts, with doubting speech being the most frequent. It also discovers that direct speech acts are more widely used than indirect ones. These findings contribute to the understanding of expressive speech acts in film, specifically how emotions and attitudes are conveyed through conversation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic structures contained in the short story "A Gospel According to Joan" written by Wilkins Freeman. By knowing in depth the contents of these elements, we can find out what the author wants to convey in this story, besides that we can also find out the expressions that the author uses through the work she writes. The primary source of the data is the short story “A Gospel According to Joan”. Secondary source of data is taken from journal and article that related to this study. This paper work that has drawn on or being influenced by Fauzan (2016) and Nicholes (2015). This analysis focuses on the structure, point of view, characterization, interpretation, meaning, and extrinsic elements of the story. This story was first published in Harper’s Monthly Magazine (December, 1919), With a twist, Freeman's story is about charity and compassion. Who's to say what's right or wrong when it's for charity? When a young girl named Joan, the down-and-out minister's daughter, knocked on Sarah's door to sell her familiar hand-work linens just before Christmas, who's to say what's right or wrong? "I was almost ready to mortgage the place to buy her out until I saw that adorable young child, the perfect picture of my dear lost Ida."  This story also shows the anger of Sarah’s relative, Lottie, that she didn’t  have to resemble that child in her own flesh and blood, Lottie doesn't want Ida to be likened to a thief.   Keywords: intrinsic extrinsic analysis, short story

Abstract

Taboo words are the primary notion in this study. There are two objectives of this study, which are to classify the types of taboo words in the show and categorize their functions. The analysis was conducted based on the theories proposed by Battistela (2005) and Wardaugh (2005). Battistela (2005) differentiated taboo words into 4 categories; Epithets, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity. Wardaugh (2006) formulated the function of taboo words into four types: to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be aggressive or provocative, and to mock authority The analyzed data taken from a comedy show Dave Chappelle’s The Closer Stand-up Comedy. The collected data is analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative method since it did not involve any numerical data. Through the analysis, the use of taboo terms in a speech is revealed; it helps the speaker deliver his points despite its rude and barbaric connotations. The comedy performance that mostly criticizes racial and LGBTQ+ phenomenon in America stimulates the speaker to use epithets as a tool for labeling the community member and making jokes. Through this comical performance, it can be concluded that taboo words can convey satire and critics to the current society, which the speaker considered as judgemental yet biased and unmerciful towards comedians. For this reason, it can be concluded that the use of taboo terms in a speech can help the speaker deliver his points despite their rude and barbaric connotations.
