Abstract

This paper attempts to configure the meaning of cultural practices in the field of tradition in Bali including the cultural meaning of assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declaration that can be used as a model TO strengthen identity of Balinese people. In order to obtain valid data, participative observation taking the form of a focused group discussion was done in several locations in Bali. The data were then thoroughly analyzed based upon the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage originated by Wierzbicka (1999) with a model of Cultural Scripts proposed by Goddarad (2002). The result of analysis showed that: 1) cultural meanings found in verbal utterance of traditionally cultural practices in Bali could be derived from such functions of speech acts as: (a) assertive with cultural meanings of ngaturang to present  and ngedengang to show ; (b) directive with cultural meanings of ngelungsur keslametan ‘to ask for safety, nuturang to advise, ngundang to invite; (c) expressive with cultural meanings of ampura to apologize and suksma to thank; (d) commissive with cultural meaning of mejanji to promise; and (e) declaration with cultural meaning of mutusang to decide; 2) Cultural meanings of Bali cultural practices could be configured using cultural scripts that can be used as a model to strengthen the identity of Balinese people.

Abstract

Abstract This article focuses on the coreferential systems of the Indonesian subordinative clauses. The specific aims are to analyze the Indonesian language typology morphosyntactically, the morphological alteration that brings about the argument structures, and the coreferential behaviour. The data were taken from the Indonesian complex sentences taking the forms of the combination of: 1) intransitive clause and intransitive clause, 2) intransitive clause and transitive clause, 3) transitive clause and intransitive clause, and 4) transitive clause and transitive clause. The theory employed is the theory of typology proposed by Comrie (1988) modified by Artawa (2004). The result of the analysis showed that the Indonesian language does not belong to such language typologies as accusative, active, passive, ergarive, and antipassive; the morphological alteration of the verb can result in the argument structures of the clause taking the forms and marked with zero and personal pronoun; and the basic coreferential system of the Indonesian language may be in the forms of S = P in which A is different, and S = A in which P is different, while the derived systems, which are based upon the combination of clauses, are as follows: (1) S = S, (2) S = P, (3) S = A, (4) A = S, (5) P = S, (6) A = A, (7) A = P, and (8) P = A.

Abstract

This article aims to identify types of archaic lexicon in the Balinese cultural practices of traditional medicine and configure their meanings. Data were obtained by participatory observation method with note-taking and recording techniques. Lists of archaic lexicons existing in 10 fields of Balinese cultural practices were taken from a questionnaire given to 80 respondents spread in Buleleng and Gianyar districts. The analysis showed that 11 archaic lexicons were found in the field of Balinese traditional medicine. They are classified into archaic lexicons because of the incomprehension of the younger generation regarding the existence of their artifacts and use in society even though they are still found and used in rural areas. Therefore, they are not yet categorized as extinct. The conceptual configuration of the lexicon can be made based on a cultural scripts approach with the "if ...... then" component and exponent description, such as entities, ways of creation, results, and functions Keywords: archaic lexicon, artifacts, medicine, young generation, geographical areas

Abstract

Efforts in documenting variations and clusterrs of Balinese lexicons, particularly in the fields of custom and religion, have been gradually made. The patterns of NSM syntax of prototypes of semantic primitives were thoroughly examined. Thus, an example of the use of the lexicon that represents each prototype of semantic primitives was made to complete the list of the lexicon previously studied. Therefore, NSM dictionary on prototypes of semantic primitives can be easily come into being.Data were obtained by the methods of participative observation, during which the techniques of Focus Group Discussion, recording, and note-taking were employed (Bungin, 2001:57; Moleong, 2000).In-depth interviews to several informants in the two regencies were carried out. The results of the interview were then cross-referenced to such key informants as tradition and community leaders. Data were comprehensively studied by the methods of padan of which relevant theories were used to study data and agih of which supporting equipment was sourced from the language itself (Sudaryanto, 2003). The results of data analysis showed that the patterns of NSM syntax were novelties by combination of several prototypes of semantic primitives accordingly. The patterns comprise of simple patterns, complex patterns, and the related specific patterns.
