Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study is intended to acquire empirical evidence regarding the impact of the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback on students' writing ability of explanation texts. Fifty six students enrolling at a high school in Jakarta were selected as the sample. They were separately distributed in the experimental class and the control class that respectively contained 28 students. Purposive sampling was utilized to recognize who the research subjects were and what level of their competence was for inclusion in this study. A quasi-experimental design, which is a subpart of a quantitative method, was employed. The data were assembled by running a writing test in the pre-test and post-test sections, whose results were followed by normality and homogeneity tests. The findings showed that the experimental class’ post-test outcome was 64.71, while the control class’ post-test was 58.25. Since the t-value surpasses the t-table (2.502>1.675), it indicates that the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback has a significant effect on improving students' writing explanation texts.ABSTRAKStudi ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh bukti riil terkait pengaruh dari umpan balik tertulis tidak langsung oleh guru terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks eksplanasi. 56 siswa yang bersekolah di sebuah sekolah menengah atas terpilih sebagai sampel. Abstract

The scarcity of job opportunities in Indonesia has encouraged some of its citizen to work abroad; these workers are commonly known as PMI (Pekerja Migran Indonesia –Indonesian migrant workers). One of the salient challenges encountered by PMI occupied in the semi-skilled and unskilled employment, which shared the highest percentage of PMI, is limited English proficiency. This has caused a range of formidable impacts ranging from misunderstandings between the employer and PMI to making PMI less preferable compare to workers from other countries. This research aims to (1) evaluate materials used in the English training programs by BLKLN (Balai Latihan Kerja Luar Negeri -Overseas Training Centre for Indonesian Migrant Workers); (2) Identify PMI’s perceptions concerning their English language needs. Forty-five PMI in Malaysia and Thirty-Six PMI in Singapore were involved in this case study research. Findings from the study revealed that there are gaps between how English is taught at BLKLN and PMI’s language learning needs to the extent of materials and method. Hence, findings from this research put an urgent call to improvement in the English language training at BLKLN in order to meet the PMI’s learning needs.

Abstract

Psycholinguistic factors are part of internal factors which connect to the intellectual process. Social factors are part of external factors which connect to social interactions. This study aims to reveal the psychological and social factors in second language acquisition of elementary and secondary students in Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative methodology focused on library research. The data used documentation techniques to gather and analyse the data through the descriptive approach. Documentation data reveal that there are five psycholinguistic factors such as (1) attitude, (2) aptitude, (3) motivation, (4) personality qualities, and (5) biological processes. Also, this research found eight social factors such as (1) gender, (2) age, (3) social class, (4) motivation, (5) attitude, (6) cultural process, (7) students' characters and situation, and (8) economic status. No particular factor can be stated as dominant among psycholinguistic and social factors. Therefore, this research reveals the same element that occurred in psycholinguistic and social factors: motivation and attitude. This study suggests that teachers should pay extra attention to students' motivation and attitude since it relates to psychological and social factors, which could support their second language acquisition.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the use of Coherence in the thesis abstracts of the graduate program of the English Education Department of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The descriptive qualitative analysis was used as the methodological design of this research that attempted to describe the phenomenon of discourse analysis, especially about coherence in the abstracts of the graduate program of the English Education Department of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Some steps were conducted to collect the data, in which ten chosen abstracts were collected from the repository of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and analyzed to examine the types of Coherence proposed by Kehler (2002), the topical subject and the topical progression to see how they build coherence in the abstracts. This research shows that four out of eleven types of Coherence proposed by Kehler (2002) are used in twenty abstracts, including Parallel, Contrast, Generalization, and Explanation. Meanwhile, the topical subject shows mood as the dominant topical subject with a 91.74% percentage. In Addition, Sequential progression is a dominant Type of Topical Progression. Furthermore, Discourse Topic is hard to analyze because the abstracts only have one paragraph, so the discourse topic is analyzed based on the terms that frequently emerge to interpret the discourse topic. Finally, this study is expected to contribute to the development of language study, especially for Discourse Analysis, and it is also hoped to contribute to the education field, especially for university students, to improve the quality of English writing in abstracts of their research papers.         Â
