Abstract

Background: The learning achievement of students in higher education is reflected in their grade point average (GPA). Selection types in student admission, learning motivation, and learning strategies are believed to influence the effective and efficient learning achievement, thus facilitating achieving the desired learning objectives. Medical students should have good behavior and learning styles that eventually can help to make lifelong learning. Students that can organize themselves to learning tend to use a good strategy in running the study. Learning motivation and learning strategies used by the learner will affect student results. This study aimed to compare the 3 types of selection in student admission to learning motivation, learning strategies and achievement of students of the Faculty of Medicine.Method: This was a quantitative study using a cross sectional design. The subjects were preclinical students at the Faculty of Medicine of Halu Oleo University, Kendari, consisting of 161 first-year students, 137 second year students, and 148 third year students. This study used a questionnaire ‘Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ)’ to measure learning motivation and learning strategies. The results of MSLQ and GPA were compared based on the type of student selection. Results: Within all categories of learning achievement, the highest scores were achieved by the students from selection of SBMPTN, followed by SNMPTN, then SLMPTN. Mean of extrinsic goal orientation of students with all types of student selection was high, whereas the lowest mean was learning self-confidence. Learning strategy with high score was repetition, and the lowest score was critical thinking in students with all types of student’s selection. There was a positive relationship between admission style, learning motivation, learning strategies and achievement of students. Conclusion: Students that were selected by SBMPTN have highest score of learning achievement, and the lowest score were students from SLMPTN. There was no significant different of motivation and learning strategy between all type of student selection.

Abstract

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) is a student-centered learning in which the process and experience of learning are individually regulated and controlled by the student. The implementation of SDL is an interaction of several aspects, including self-motivation, self-control, and self-monitoring skills. Students with strong motivation in the learning process will have more consistency in implementing the SDL. Inner self-motivation will give better impacts than that obtained from the outside. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of intrinsic motivation to SDL implementation in the Faculty of Medicine of Halu Oleo University. The study was quantitative research using a cross-sectional design. Subjects were 91 sophomores of the Faculty of Medicine of Halu Oleo University (UHO). Data were collected using a total sampling method. SDL implementation and intrinsic motivation were measured using Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) questionnaires, respectively. Data were statistically analyzed using Pearson’s correlation. Second-year of medical students of UHO showed a high intrinsic motivation and SDL implementation. Students with high intrinsic motivation were found to apply high implementation of SDL. Moreover, students with moderate intrinsic motivation also showed high implementation of SDL. There is a significant correlation between intrinsic motivation to SDL implementation among medical students of UHO. Further research is required to investigate other factors that affect the SDL implementation of medical students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an and the short-term memory of female students at an Islamic boarding school for Qur’an memorizers. This research used an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at Al-Askar Islamic Boarding School in Kendari City. A total of 77 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data on the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an were obtained from students’ memorization records, while short-term memory was measured using the digit span test. The data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that 50.6% of respondents had a low intensity of memorizing the Qur’an, while 49.4% had a high intensity. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between the intensity of memorizing the Qur’an and short-term memory, with a p-value of 0.001 and a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.413. This result indicates a moderate positive correlation, meaning that higher memorization intensity is associated with better short-term memory. The findings suggest that regular Qur’an memorization may contribute to improving cognitive functions, particularly short-term memory. However, this study is limited by its cross-sectional design and the use of a relatively small sample from a single Islamic boarding school. This study provides empirical evidence on the relationship between Qur’an memorization practices and cognitive performance, particularly short-term memory among female students in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders worldwide, with a global prevalence of 60–80% among adults. This condition results in limitations of daily activities, decreased productivity, and reduced quality of life. In Indonesia, LBP is frequently reported among both productive and elderly age groups, with major risk factors including non-ergonomic working postures, insufficient physical activity, and degenerative processes. In Kendari Barat District, LBP cases are often encountered at community health centers , particularly among individuals with diverse occupations such as office workers, traders, and laborers. These jobs often involve repetitive physical activity or prolonged static postures, highlighting the need for stronger promotive and preventive interventions at the community level. The purpose of this community service program is to strengthen the capacity of health fasilitators in understanding, preventing, and managing LBP through education, ergonomic training, and stretching exercises. The methods applied include interactive counseling, practical simulations, and cadre mentoring at the Kendari Barat Community Health Center. A total of 60 health cadres participating in this activity are expected to contribute by providing education to the community in their respective environments.                                                              Abstrak.
