Abstract

This study aims at investigating teachers’ and students’perceptions of autonomous learning in English language teaching and to what extent the teachers foster students’ autonomous learning. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 30 English teachers and 283 third-year secondary school students in the provincial part of Indonesia. The participants in this study were randomly selected. Furthermore, to obtain the supplementary data, an interview was conducted to two students from each school. The findings indicate that albeit positive tenets on autonomous learning were held by both teachers and students, they still had inadequate understandings of what autonomous learning concepts are. In terms of exposing students to autonomous learning, the teachers possess highly-driven endeavor. This study ends with suggestions for teachers and teacher education programs.

Abstract

Based on the result of the researches on  text book materials under 2013 curriculum published by  the government, for elementary school level, it is found that the materials from one competence to another on those books are not well-integrated, even the competences are elaborated in single theme or subtheme. Though those text books are entitled “Integrated Thematic Book of Curriculum 2013”, they still do not show the integration they should give. It is assumed that the disordered materials are caused by the absence of a certain field of knowledge that should be used as a binder and medium of transmitting and integrating the whole competences in case the material changes. Regarding the problem, this article delivers a brief description on how Indonesian language is used to bind and become a medium of transmission of the whole nonintegrated field of competences from any different materials. In other word, this article presents a conceptual model of designing integrated thematic learning on the basis of the language as a medium of transferring knowledge

Abstract

The Covid-19 has been deemed a global pandemic affecting almost all sectors, particularly in education. Learning activities have been forced to relocate virtually due to the school closure. This study aimed at exploring teaching-learning problems felt by English teachers and their efforts to overcome those problems during the school closure in a state senior high school in West Lombok. Designed in a case study, two English teachers were voluntarily recruited using convenience sampling. The data for this study were gathered from observation, interviews, and documentation. Informed by the theory of Community of Inquiry (CoI) and previous empirical studies, the data were analysed using four stages of the interactive model. The investigation revealed that during the virtual teaching, teachers experienced considerable internal and external pedagogical glitches. It was also uncovered that the teachers disclosed some endeavours to maintain teaching, social, and cognitive presence in the instruction to surmount the nested pedagogical problems. However, their efforts were observed inadequate and left some room for improvement on how teachers could effectively serve in the virtual pedagogical practices. Some implications and future research directions are discussed accordingly. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v6i2.6463

Abstract

Anchored by the scant studies on Indonesian junior high school students’ orientation in learning English as a foreign language, this present study showcased how their learning orientation, delved into integrative and instrumental orientation models, was enacted. 144 students were recruited to answer an integrative and instrumental orientation 20-item questionnaire adapted from Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). Findings suggested that in terms of integrative orientation, the participants viewed learning English as a gateway to knowing and understanding native speakers’ cultural norms. This tenet was echoed by the global spread of English. In terms of instrumental orientation, the participants believed that learning English assisted them in career advancement. The results of this study concluded that the students, despite positively favored in learning English, leaned their English learning orientation on the native speakerism issue and the global spread of English.

Abstract

Grounded from the input hypothesis proposed by Krashen in language learning, a plethora of studies has been addressed to investigate the role of extensive reading which is generally done as an outside classroom activity. However, the integration of similar activities as a part of teaching procedures in the classroom is inadequately explored. Therefore, to fill this lacuna, this article briefly chronicles the enactment of 15-minute silent reading as the adoption of extensive reading in an English class. 32 freshmen were recruited on a voluntary basis. Nested in action research, students engaged in five activities: 1) building knowledge and tutorial,2) material self-selection, 3) silent reading, 4) short sharing session, and 5) individual and collective reflection within 5 weeks of time frame. Findings from the classroom observations, students’ reflective journals, and oral collective reflection indicate that the participants responded  positively and acknowledged some valuable benefits. Overall, the empirical evidence suggests that 15-minute silent reading can be one of alternative activities to be integrated in the classroom instruction.

Abstract

The shift to online learning milieu due to the Covid-19 pandemic has brought some impact in the practices or teaching learning including the nature of writing corrective feedback (WCF) that should also be migrated to online platforms. Although much research has been conducted on the effectiveness of WCF, less has explored student and teacher preferences and perceptions of online corrective feedback through various platforms in student thesis writing in response to this abrupt learning transformation. Lensing from a case study, we recruited two English teachers and fifteen learners non-randomly with a purposive sampling technique. This study used closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the formulation of Sudijono (2006) for a closed-ended questionnaire and adapted the steps formulated by Creswell (2003) to analysis the interview data. The result showed that there were differences in preferences and perceptions between teachers and learners regarding the use of different types of WCF: direct and indirect feedback. The teachers prefer to use both types of feedback: direct and indirect feedback. Meanwhile, learners preferred direct corrective feedback. Thus, some pedagogical contribution is also discussed, accordingly.
