Abstract

The neonatal nursing room in several hospitals in Indonesia has been widely disseminated about the application of developmental care but there are still many nurses who have not applied due to lack of nurse confidence (self efficacy is lacking). This study aims to identify the relationship between self efficacy factors and the application of developmental care by nurses in the neonate care unit. This study used cross sectional study design with 82 samples of nurses in neonate level I, II, III at two hospitals in RSAB Harapan Kita and RSPAD GatotSubroto. The instrument used is self-efficacy questionnaire and Indonesian translation instrument Universe develomental care (UDC). The data of this study were analyzed using bivariate analysis with independent T test. The result of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between the application of developmental care with self efficacy of neonate nurse with p = 0,017. The researcher suggests the institution of nursing services to be able to facilitate the provision of funds and training for increase skill and confidence self nurses in the neonate room.

Abstract

Background: The implementation of child care education will be different from adult care education. This is because children are not miniature adults. However, the role of child care cannot be separated from the involvement of parents or families. Motivational interviewing (MI) educational interventions have been suggested to improve efficacy, knowledge, and health behavior change in pediatric patients. Psychological approaches such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) have emerged as a promising alternative to overcome these limitations, with the aim of creating more sustainable behavior change in the context of health. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of Motivational Interviewing (MI)-based education on efficacy, knowledge, and behavioral change in children. Method: A systematic literature review study using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the PICOS approach. The keywords used were, "motivation" OR "self-efficacy" OR "knowledge" OR "behavior change" AND "pediatric" OR "pediatrics" AND "motivational interviewing" OR "directive counseling". Identified 6 articles related to the impact of motivational interviewing (MI)-based education on efficacy, knowledge, and behavioral change in children. Results: Showed that MI intervention has a positive impact on self-efficacy, increased knowledge, and behavioral change in children with various health conditions, such as obesity, asthma, dental caries, and alcohol dependence. Conclusion: Although the results showed significant improvements in various parameters, differences in the level of effectiveness between studies indicate the need for a more specific approach to the target population and certain health problems. Suggestion: Further research with a more targeted and specific focus is needed to provide more comprehensive results and support the development of future MI-based interventions.   Keywords: Children; Education; Efficacy; Knowledge; Motivational Interviewing (MI). Metode: Penelitian sistematik literature review menggunakan panduan Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) dan pendekatan PICOS. Kata kunci yang digunakan yakni, “motivation” OR “self efficacy” OR “knowledge” OR “behavior change” AND “pediatric” OR “pediatrics” AND “motivational interviewing” OR “directive counselling”.

Abstract

Background: The transition of premature infants from the intrauterine to the extrauterine environment is a complex and challenging adaptation process for infants and their mother. Empowering parents through education and support is crucial in navigating these challenges. Propose: To review parental empowerment through early kangaroo care a holistic approach to neonatal health. Method: Systematic review research according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. This literature research uses seven electronic databases, namely PubMed, Proquest, Sciencedirect, Wiley Online, Emerald insight, Sage Journals, and JSTOR. The data search began on September 30, 2024, using the keywords "parent" or "mother" or "maternal" and "infant" or "preterm" and "early" or "immediately" and "skin-to-skin" or "kangaroo-mother-care". The literature criteria used were full texts that discussed prematurity (newborns with a gestational age of <37 weeks), mothers who performed early KMC, parents who performed early KMC, the outcomes measured in this study were infant outcomes (morbidity, mortality, physiological status, weight, and length of stay) and maternal outcomes (exclusive breastfeeding, maternal mental health), and this study used a randomized control design. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42025633170). Results: The search process identified 318 articles. Further screening resulted in a final sample of 7 articles. The review results showed that early KMC has benefits for both mothers and infants. Benefits of early KMC for mothers include increased exclusive breastfeeding, reduced depression, and increased maternal self-satisfaction in caring for preterm infants. Furthermore, in preterm infants, early KMC has been shown to improve physiological stability, weight gain, reduce mortality, morbidity, infections, weight gain, and reduce length of hospitalization. Conclusion: Early implementation of KMC not only provides clinical benefits for preterm infants, but also contributes to improved maternal mental health. These findings support the promotion of KMC as a standard intervention in neonatal intensive care units to optimize short- and long-term outcomes for mothers and preterm infants.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze complementary food fulfillment during disaster situations in Indonesia since it frequently experiences natural disasters and young children face unique challenges related to their feeding needs in disaster situations. This qualitative case study based on the Mount Merapi eruption and Sumedang landslide in 2021 collected data using observations, forum group discussions, and in-depth interviews; then, a thematic analysis was conducted. This study involved 17 participants, including Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) activists, health workers, residents involved in making complementary foods, and primary caregivers of children aged 6–24 months. This study found that there were five themes generated from the data analysis; 1) the donation of home-based complementary foods based on local wisdom, 2) inadequate complementary feeding, 3) limited resources to manage the complementary feeding, 4) clean versus dirty conditions, and 5) mothers’ endeavour in complementary feeding practices. This study concluded that the complementary feeding practices during a disaster in Indonesia were supported by NGOs, residents, and nearby healthcare workers and thus represent a form of mutual cooperation among the Indonesian people.

Abstract

Febrile neutropenia mostly happens among children with cancer and can be prevented by infection management control. This study aimed to measure the parents’ knowledge and behavior about infection management control implementation in children with febrile neutropenia. This study used a pre-experimental design with a pre-post without control group approach. The study sample consisted of 30 parents of children with cancer who were treated with febrile neutropenia. Pre-test measured parents’ knowledge about infection control using Parents’ Knowledge Instrument before the education session begins. Infection management control consisted of parents’ education and behavior monitoring of infection control for five days in hospital. After that, the respondents did a post-test to see the effectiveness of the intervention. The infection management control was effective to reduce infection. This can be seen from the significant increase in parents’ knowledge (p=0,001) and it was in line with the change of parents’ infection management control behavior.  Parents’ infection management control in children with febrile neutropenia is effective in reducing the incidence of infection and the length of stay for children in the hospital, as well as improving the quality of life for children. Further research can be carried out with more effective methods so that infection management control can run optimally.

Abstract

Premature infants have distinct physiological differences in their skin compared to full-term infants, characterized by thinner skin and subcutaneous tissue due to an underdeveloped stratum corneum. Several non-pharmacological therapies are implemented to improve the skin integrity of premature infants. However, the effectiveness of these therapies needs to be explored further to establish their role in enhancing skin care and overall health outcomes in this vulnerable population. Objective to identify the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions on the skin condition and health outcomes of preterm infants, and to determine which intervention is most effective in improving skin condition and health outcomes. In this meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of emollient oil administration interventions were systematically searched across four databases including Pubmed, Science Direct, Oxford Academic, and Cochrane. The studies that met the eligibility criteria were independently assessed for methodological quality, and data extraction was performed by two investigators. A total of 8 trials were identified, encompassing 3637 participants. To analyze the data, a random-effects model was employed, along with subgroup analysis and meta-regression analysis to explore the effects of different intervention components. Coconut oil and sunflower seed oil were evaluated for their effects on skin condition using the NSCS. The results indicated that sunflower seed oil was significantly more effective in reducing the NSCS score, with a p-value of 0.001 (95% CI = 1.426 to -0.364). Liquid Vaseline in the control group also showed significant results, with a p-value of 0.001 (95% CI = -1.426 to -0.364). In terms of weight gain and the incidence of hypothermia, there were no significant differences between the two oils and the control group. Administration of the oils once a day for a longer duration proved to be more effective in improving the infants' skin condition. Evidence suggests that the use of coconut oil and sunflower seed oil is effective in increasing body weight and reducing the incidence of hypothermia and sepsis. Furthermore, sunflower seed oil appears to be more effective than coconut oil in improving skin condition. Based on these findings, it is recommended that policymakers and healthcare professionals consider incorporating coconut oil or sunflower seed oil emollients into the routine care of premature infants.
