Abstract

The research aimed to analyze the metaphor of animals’ names in Javanese expressions as representing power and authority in its positive and negative sides. The ancient land of Java was ruled by kings. This situation indicated that ancient Javanese were closely related to kingdoms and regulations that were strict rules of politeness rules or authoritarian. It created a situation where direct criticisms, suggestions, and warnings were conveyed to those who had  power, which might cause the problem to the conveyor. Thus, people preferred to express their opinion in the  metaphorical form to preserve the Javanese manners. Since Javanese people also lived as farmers and hunters, they could identify the nature of various animals’ characters. They began to compare some animals’ nature characters to describe  human characters or behaviors in the forms of metaphor known as Javanese expressions. The methods applied were a  descriptive qualitative by choosing the data that contained animal names, classifying them, analyzing the meanings of the  expressions, and providing results of the analysis. These metaphorical forms are hitherto known as proverbs and are  make used them as philosophy of life. They also used proverbs. The data were taken from “Seri Kajian Sastra Klasik 100  Paribasan Jawa Simpul-Simpul Kearifan Lokal Budaya Jawa” by Bambang Husen Al Marie in 2018. There are 26  expressions using animal names found in this dictionary. Macan, gajah, and asu are the three animals that are mostly  used as a metaphor to describe human characters within a sovereignty. Heuristic and hermeneutic approaches are  applied to analyze the data and to find out the real meaning of the classified data.

Abstract

As a complex process, writing is always interesting to be discussed. One of the students' biggest problems in writing is in maintaining coherence. Coherence is a systemic model to unify some elements to become good writing. This article aims to identify the most cohesion type used by the students and factors that influence the unsuccessful coherence of the text. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained by collecting descriptive text written by thirteen English Diploma Program students. The unit of analysis in this study is a community –based tourism text which describes tourism villages in Banyumas Regency, Indonesia. The writers take Community-Based Tourism (CBT) as the unit of analysis because the government right now is developing CBT in many areas in Indonesia. As an important stakeholder, the University must prepare the students to write good descriptions of CBT. The result of this study shows most of the students use reference, reiteration, and conjunction in their writing but they have very minimal use of ellipsis, substitution, and collocation. The writers found that some of the students' sentences have successful integration, but some have not successful integration. There are several factors influence unsuccessful integration. Those are students' prior knowledge, inappropriate use of cohesive devices, and illogical sequence. Finally, we can conclude that the students need more guidance and knowledge of using effective writing, cohesive devices and logical sequence.

The tweets were taken from September 2021 through October 2021. The goals of @onlyjiungs' tweets were intended to be represented and expressed in the final sections of the Twitter post outcomes. The following social act update about Jiung's life was provided by @onlyjiungs. She underlined a particular statement she made in the tweets. Abstract

The virginity test is a long-standing tradition that has been documented in at least 20 countries around the globe (WHO, 2018). Women and girls are frequently subjected to or forced to undergo this test for various reasons. In the Indonesian context, this gynecological examination conducted under the belief to determine if a woman has had vaginal intercourse has to be experienced by female military candidates. In response, the Indonesian army has set to remove this somewhat controversial policy. Through media, this issue was packed in such a way that reflects the media's stance. Accordingly, this research aims to investigate how media take a stance toward this issue and how the translated version delivers it from the perspective of translation studies and appraisal theory using the qualitative method. Appraisal resources identified the data and compared the original text to the Indonesian versions retrieved from the ABC online news portal (Australian and Indonesia-based). This method is conducted to gather and interpret any attitudinal resources in both original and translated texts. It reveals that the translated version, compared to the more neutral-sounded original one, exploits a more clear-cut attitude towards the issue. Various attitudinal lexis including invasive, gender-based, victim and abusive, are chosen to revoice her stance that this practice is groundless. Through its translation, the author articulates her attitude louder. It proves that different target readers influence how the information is packed and constructed. As a re-situated text, translation barely occurs in an empty space.

Abstract

The development of the globalization era has caused many changes, one of which is the increasingly sophisticated technology. Social media is a phenomenon as a result of technological advancement. It can be accessed by all groups, including teenagers. The growing level of social media use among teenagers can affect various aspects of their lives, including academic and non-academic achievement motivation. This study aims to find out the relationship between social media access and student achievement motivation. This study uses a quantitative method in the form of a survey. Data was obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The data analysis technique uses Kendall’s correlation. The results of the study show a positive relationship between social media access and student achievement motivation. The p value or significance of 0.002 indicates that there is a substance relationship between the two variables because the p-value is 0.002 <α 0.05 at a significance level of 99% (0.01). Social media is a factor that influences motivation for student achievement. This can happen because of imitation behavior towards positive content on the accounts they follow regarding achievements. Social media helps students to get learning materials and makes it easier to get information about competitions.

Abstract

The article discusses translation techniques applied in the translation of culture-specific concepts in the description text  of Museum Wayang dan Artefak Purbalingga. Culture-specific concept is one of the common types of non-equivalence at word level resulted from the absence of cultural concepts in the target language. To cope with this problem, a translator is provided with translation techniques proposed by many translation scholars. This research applied the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir. Based on the analysis, the most frequently-used technique is borrowing technique. The technique is relatively common to apply in translating culturally-bound terms that do not have one-to-one correspondence. The most common non-equivalence problem at word level to find is problem of culture-specific concepts. It is because the text describes the puppets displayed there, and to be more specific, puppets are parts of Indonesian culture, a precious cultural heritage.  Therefore, many culturally-bound words or terms are kept original.
