Abstract

Polymer mixture of polyester and vinyl ester is widely used in engineering fields such as for car bumpers, boat bodies, ultra-light aircraft wings, wind turbine blades and others. One of the requirements to meet the application aspects in the engineering field is the ability of the material to withstand bending loads. For this reason, it is necessary to test the flexural stress characteristics of the mixture of the two polymers of unsaturated polyester and unsaturated vinyl ester. The aim is to find out which of the two polymer blends obtains superior flexural resistance properties from each of the polymers with respect to the blend percentage. To determine the flexural stress value of the polyester and vinyl ester mixture, a flexural stress test was carried out with reference to the standard flexural test or the bending test used based on ASTM D 790 by varying the composition of the mixture 100%: 0%, 90%: 10%, 80%: 20%, 60%:40%, and 0%:100%. From the results of the bending stress test on specimens with variations in the composition of polyester and vinyl ester with the hand lay-up method, the highest bending stress value is found in the composition of 60% polyester and 40% vinyl ester, which is 126.88 MPa ( an increase in maximum flexural strength of 255%)

Abstract

Bending stress of a pipe made of natural fiber composite is investigated in this paper. Pineapple leaf which is very potential to be developed as an alternative reinforcement in composite materials is used for this investigation. The effects of layer number and fiber orientation to the bending strength and elastic modulus are investigated. The experiments are conducted based on ASTM D790-03. The results show that the composite pipe with two layers and fiber orientation of 90º/-90º has the highest bending strength. On other hand, the composite material having one layer and fiber orientation of 45º/-45º produce the highest elastic modulus.

Abstract

The increasing of the number of elderlies in Indonesia is a demographic bonus that needs an attention both their health and well-being. Physiological limitations and spaces do not make this age group unable to receive any information about their health. With the advancement of technology, they also can access information and communication technology facilities such as applications on android devices. This led to the development of applications for elderly health in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to screen the number of android-based elderly applications in Indonesia, knowing the characteristics of android-based elderly applications, and the quality of applications. This study used descriptive methods through screening and analysis of android-based elderly applications in Indonesia in Play Store® during February to March 2022. Screening is conducted using the keywords "elderly", AND "elderly" followed by application assessment using the MARS (Mobile App Rating Scale) tool. Based on the screening it obtained 9 android-based applications about the elderly with an average score of application quality is in the range of 3.0 (Acceptable) to 4.32 (Good). Some apps have poor engagement and functionality. Aesthetically and the aspects of information entered into the application are acceptable. The perceived impact of some applications on awareness, user knowledge, attitudes, intentions to change, search for help and the possibility of actual changes in the health behavior of the elderly is still lacking so improvements are needed to be made to the content / material entered. It is important to research elderly apps developed for iOS device users.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of clearance and loading regarding to the displacement, distribution of contact loads and stiffness of spherical roller bearings at rest. The displacement formulation of the inner ring of the bearing was developed by defining the angle of inclination of the roller element to the axis of shaft. The comparison between exact calculations using the Matlab program and numerical modeling with MSC Marc for the displacement has an error value of less than 10%. Therefore, the displacement formulation of the inner ring of the bearing is used to calculate the exact distribution of contact load and stiffness of the spherical roller bearing and numerical modeling. The results revealed that the effect of clearance and loading on the displacement of the inner ring of the spherical roller bearing is directly proportional. The contact load of the bearing roller element is distributed over the part of the roller element that is in contact with its path, where the largest contact load occurs at the position of the roller element parallel to the axis of the shaft at rest. Meanwhile, bearing stiffness will decreases with increasing the value of clearance.

Abstract

Scoliosis correction methods often involve orthopedic procedures such as implant placement to stabilize movement and correct spinal deformity. The choice of surgical method is highly dependent on the location and nature of the fracture. Fractures with significant damage require a different approach compared to cases of minor injuries. Three dimensional finite element model of C1–L6 spine was used to simulate conditions with single cylindrical implant fixation under a vertical downward loading force 50 N and cylindrical screw types made of titanium alloy. The human spine, encompassing the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions, exhibits a complex biomechanical response when subjected to physiological loads. Displacement that occurs due to axial force can be the result of pedicle screw movement with vertebrae of the spine. Installation of 4 (four) rows of pedicle screws reduces the release of pedicle screws from the spine. The use of more fixation can reduce the stress distribution on the vertebrae of the spine.

Abstract

This research focuses on the design, development, and optimization of the electric go-kart "E-Andalasian" as an environmentally friendly campus transportation solution. Structural analysis was performed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate stress distribution and deformation under static and dynamic loads. The study also optimizes the BLDC motor, 72V 40Ah lithium battery, and controller to achieve efficient and reliable performance. Results indicate critical stress points at wheel joints, with recommendations for aluminum alloy use to enhance weight efficiency. Experimental testing showed that the motor achieved a maximum torque of 44.52 N.m and 6447 RPM, while the battery supports a range of 40 km with a charging time of 2 hours 9 minutes. Although the maximum speed reached 59 km/h, additional optimization is required to meet the original design target. The findings provide a prototype foundation for future improvements and contribute to green campus mobility.

Abstract

A new shape of stop-drilled hole is proposed in which triple stop-drilled holes called Multi Stop Drilled Hole (MSDH) are drilling at the crack tip. The main objective of the proposing method is to reduce stress concentration at the edge of the stop holes. Reducing the stress concentration factor at the crack tip is the main issue to arrest the crack growth. In this study, a numerical methodology using finite element analysis with linear elastic behaviour assumption is considered to study the effect of the stop-drilled hole on the reduction of stress concentration at crack tip. The variation number of stop-drilled hole and hole diameter at the crack tip corresponding to the stress concentration will be investigated. It reveals that the number of stop-drilled holes significantly influenced to reduce the stress concentration factor. Increasing the number of the stop-drilled holes will reduce the stress concentration factor. Furthermore, the diameter of stop hole significantly affects the decreasing stress concentration. The increasing value diameter of the stop-drilled hole will reduce the stress concentration. In the meantime, the triple-drilled hole has the highest percentages of decreasing stress concentration and the lowest stress concentration comparing to single and double stop-drilled hole.

Abstract

Vehicle crashworthiness is a critical aspect of automotive safety engineering designed to minimize injury to occupants during collisions. This paper investigates the role of trigger mechanisms in enhancing crashworthiness by managing energy absorption and deformation during impact. Trigger mechanisms, including structural features like grooves, holes, or geometric discontinuities, initiate controlled deformation, optimizing energy dissipation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of crash boxes with various cross sections and six trigger designs: bead initiator, diamond notch, smaller thickness, circular notch, circular holes, and oval holes, to absorb energy of collision using computational software, MSC Dytran. The results show that a crash box with an octagonal section absorbs more energy than those with square, rectangular, or hexagonal sections. Among the introduced trigger designs, the models of bead initiator, circular notches, and circular holes were considerably the most effective in energy absorption.
