Abstract

This paper describes the development efforts of Islamic educational institution in order to maintain its existence in the midst of competition between educational institutions with various backgrounds of social religious organization communities that surround and underlie them. Yapita Primary School is a portrait of Islamic educational institution that is undergoing the process of development in the hope of becoming one of the best and excellent schools in Surabaya. It has undergone four (4) changes in its development process gradually, they are: First, the Traditional – isolative model that only held Islamic education. The second is the Synthesis model which is the implementation of Traditional-Isolative model with a little general education additions. Third, it brought a balanced education between Traditional – Isolative and general education model. Fourth, it integrates two Traditional-isolative models and Western-Modern model into a curriculum structure and enriched it with Student Talent-Interest Development and the excellent characteristics. Changes become necessity to be done so that its existence is still needed and sought by the community in the midst of the similar educational institutions emergence in the vicinity, among others; SD Luqman al-Hakim Hidayatullah Primary School, Muhammadiyah 26 Primary School, and al-Uswah Islamic Primary School.

Abstract

This paper attempts to examine the leadership competence of Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) teachers in the areas of Islamic theology and Morality with the qualification of Bachelor Degree (S1) and pesantren-assigned teachers (guru tugas pesantren) graduated from IslamicSenior High School and factors that influence it. PAI teachers with the qualification of S1 or those who have pedagogical competence are believed to have higher leadership competencies, and vice versa,pesantren-assigned teachers with secondary level education qualification, have lower leadership competence. The results show a contrasting real picture of the phenomenon. This reality is interesting to examine further in order to find the pattern to increase the competence of teachers in accordance with the needs of madrasahs/schools. This study uses a combination of methods, quantitative supported by the analysis of qualitative data (mix-methods) by taking the population of Islamic Theology and Morality teachers who teach in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI). The results of the analysis illustrate the average value of the competence of PAI teachers with S1 qualification which is 55.8333 and pesantren-assigned teachers which is 51.4000 with the mean of difference 4.43333. Although there is an average difference, it is not so significant. The level of significance is only 0.040 which means <0.05. Based on the statistical calculation, there is no difference in leadership competence among S1 graduated teachers and pesantren-assigned teachers. Qualitative data analysis shows that there are structural factors that negatively affect the achievement of the competence of PAI teachers with S1 qualification. On the other hand, the positive achievement of leadership competence of pesantren-assigned teachers is influenced by the success of technical guidance, strict recruitment, and habituation as peer teacher while they were in pesantren. There is a relative deprivation phenomenon that emerged among PAI teachers who have had academic competence. The various structural policy packages issued by the government that is ideally projected to improve competence, including the leadership competence of the teachers, have a negative impact in the implementation realm. In particular, policies highlight more on improving learning administrative governance aspects which result in a decrease of teachers creative ability in learning.

Abstract

This article describes a 'hijaz' ulama from Java, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani. He is known as the 'fiqh' ulama. However, it turns out he also has a tendency in the field of Sufism. His thoughts on Sufism are so much embodied in his various works. The Sufism here refers to all that is done to keep the heart clear, to cure broken hearts, to adorn the heart with a laudable behaviour and all things that can lead one to a high degree in faith and Islam. According to him, human formation can be done with deepening of the science of Sufism through education. Three of his works in the field of Sufism, Salalim al-Fudhola 'Syarh Mandzumah Hidayah al-Azkiya', Qami 'al-Tughyan Syarh' ala Manzhumah Syu'ab al-Iman, and Nashaih al-'Ibad fi Bayan Alfadz Munabbihat 'ala al-Isti 'dad li Yaum al-Ma'ad, asserted his thoughts that describe a necessity for a Muslim to integrate Shari'a, tariqat and hakikat. Shari'a means to keep all the commandments of God and stay away from His prohibitions; Thariqah deepens into the Shari'a through the activities of sunnah, good deeds, dhikr, riyadlah, and all outwardly and inwardly activities that can lead a person to the essence of himself and his God. The process of integration can be realized through the planting of seven basic characters, the habituation of eleven attitudes of sufism, and exemplary attitudes and behaviors designed in an educational curriculum. Abstract

This article focuses its discussion on the order of ethical values behind the success of Sunan Ampel, one of the Nine Saints (Walisongo), to co-modify the Pancamakara ritual that involves the Tantra-Bhairawa sect during the era of Majapahit Kingdom. The Pancamakara has been also called as Pancamakara Puja, Cakra Puja, Mo-Limo or Panca Ma, which stand on five basic elements, namely mamsa, matsya, madya, maithuna, and mudra. The study finds that Sunan Ampel had successfully created the concept of Pancamakara and its sustainability as exchange values with Islam with no intention to totally deconstruct its utility values. The value order consists of certainty to always emphasize islamization and to bridge Islam and local religious rituals in order to achieve peaceful and non-violent religious practices. The value order is transformed into existing pattern of culture. Consequently, the implementation pattern of Pancamakara as religious ritual had still been preserved but its substance was entirely deconstructed. Through his magical touch, Sunan Ampel had preserved Pancamakara that had no longer based on the five basic elements called Mo-Limo. Instead, the doctrine commands people to avoid the five basic elements and it now becomes Moh-Limo (unwilling to commit five immoral acts).

Abstract

This paper tried to show that Ibrahim Asmarakandi is one of the important preachers in the early era of Islamization in Indonesia. In addition, since Samarkandi is originated from Samakand, the paper also tried to show the relation between Islam in Samarkand and Java in the 15 CE. Other important findings shown in the paper is that the islamization of Samarkandi has succeeded to the extent that it is accepted by both the common and elites. Interestingly, the Sufism is proven to be effective in his islamization effort. One of the key is his successful strategies, resulted from Sufism approach, is the tolerant attitudes towards other religions particularly Hindu as the biggest religion in Java at the time.

Abstract

This article examines the disappearance of the dimension of servitude among the members Sholawat Wahidiyah. The results of this study indicate that the variety of human normative responsibilities as a manifestation of the dimension of servitude to God (takālif) is valid for negation without reducing the degree of obedience. The validity of the negation occurs when the members are on their spiritual journey in the phase of fānī al-majdhūb. The provisions of the validity of the negation depend on the time of the phase of the journey. Practitioners who have arrived at this degree are totally free from all their responsibilities theo-centrically, as servants who are bound by devotion to their Lord. The validity of the negation refers to the mystical perspective and experience of prominent sufis, such as Ibn ‘Arabī and ‘Abd al-Wahāb al-Sha‘rānī. As an inseparable part of mujāhadah, the doctrine of fānī al-majdhūb is also transformed into a formal education environment managed by the practicioners Sholawat Wahidiyah. Thus, this doctrine is not only projected for members who have been mature in terms of age and spiritual journey, but also for students at the elementary and secondary levels of education.

Abstract

This paper investigates the era of uncertainty and ethical arrangement formulated in the Javanese classical text written by Ranggawarsita. Most of his works, especially Serat Kalatidha, Serat Sabdapranawa, and Serat Sabdatama, situated in the era of uncertainty and moved to the era of zaman edan (crazy age), kalabendhu (age of anger), owah or pakewuh (bizar time). Social structure in this era tied to unethical behavior. Elite communities were lacking of self- representation as a good example, meanwhile the communities were ignoring public advisability.  To set free from uncertainty condition is possible through implementing four ethical doctrines in the social life, namely: Monotheistic behavior, active submission to God’s predestination, self-contemplation, and eling lan waspada (self-awareness and mindfulness). The dynamic of nationhood today is almost reflecting the age of kalabendhu, and therefore it is necessary to do dissemination and transformation of ethical doctrines in the Islamic Higher Education by using the doctrine as a source of subject of Islamic Ethic. The need of dissemination is because academia in the Islamic Higher Education is an integral part of uncertain social structure.
