Abstract

Use cooking Oil is the remains of frying oil that can not be reused. Therefore a further processing is needed, one of them is to be come liquid soap. The aim of this study was to process used cooking oil into liquid soap using the extract of lemongrass, pandan and lemon. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering and parameters tested at the Food Chemical Analysis Laboratorium Faculty of Agricultural in April 2015 to Mei 2015 by using a non-factorial completely randomized design. Parameters measured were water content, free fatty acid (FFA), alcohol insoluble part, and organoleptic test. The result showed that extract of lemongrass, pandan and lemon extract had no significant effect on water content, free fatty acid (FFA) and alcohol insoluble part. Abstract

To serve the need of potato consumers for the ready good potato, it must be processed through post-harvest . Some of the process is cutting and slicing. The need of post-harvest processing that leads to mechanization and to get the optimum gain and high efficiency, potato screw slicer had to be designed and constructed. The study was conducted with literature study, experiment, observation and testing of the equipment. The effective capacity of the equipment was 51,72 kg/h. Basic cost to be incurred in slicing potato with the equipment was Rp. 199,72/kg in the 1st year, Rp. 199,99/kg in the 2nd year,Rp. 200,26/kg  in  the 3rd, Rp. 200,56/kg in the 4th and Rp. 200,87/kg in the 5th. The equipment will reach the break even point if the amount of slicing potato was 889,,30 kg/year. Net present value of the equipment with an interest rate of7,5% was Rp. 391.040.422,54which meant that the business was feasible to run. The internal rate of return was 49,45%. Abstract

Compost is a result  of plant waste decomposition that caused by microorganism decomposition. Therefore it needs a decomposer to fasten organic decomposition. This research was done in April until August 2015 in Soil Laboratory, Agricultural Technology Research Agency of North Sumatera and Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, USU, Medan, using non factorial completely randomized design with four types of MOL, i, e, orange MOL, mango MOL, pinneapple MOL, and papaya MOL. Measured parametres were comparison of C/N, pH and yield. The results showed that there was no different effect given by orange MOL, mango MOL, pinneapple MOL, and papaya MOL in the case of C/N, pH and yield. Key words: Compost, decomposer, palm frond.

Abstract

Considering that the oil palm plants consume a lot of water, it is needed more assessment of the magnitude of the rate of evapotraspiration especially oil palm plantations, and in the initial value stages the process can begin from nursery. The value of crop evapotranspiration can be determined based on the value of potential evaporation and oil palm crop coefficients for each growth period. This study is aimed to determine the evapotranspiration value and crop coefficients of4 months old tenera seeds.Evapotranspiration value of oil palm plantations in the initial period of plant research was 0.9 mm/day and the final period of the plant was 0.98 mm/day. The amount of evaporation in the initial period of the study was 1.98 mm/day and in the final period was 1.93 mm/day. The study shows that oil palm crop coefficient in the initial period was 0.47 and in the final period was 0.5. Keywords : Evapotranspiration, Crop coefficient, potential evaporation, oil palm Plant

Abstract

Melinjo plant has a very high quality of fiber that found in the inner bark of  the stem that can be made as a rope as a substitute to synthetic ropes that can decrease environmental pollution. The research was aimed to make a fiber rope from the inner  bark of melinjo  stem and to test the endurance of the rope toward a tensile test. The research had been conducted at Agriculture Engineering Laboratory, College of Agriculture, USU and tensile test was conducted at Research Laboratory, College of Engineering, USU in March-July 2015 using spinners simple tool in making the rope and tensile test to determine the strength of the rope toward burden. Parameter  measured were tensile stress, strain, elasticity, ropes deformation, and malleability. The results showed that heterogeneous fiber caused different rope diameter and affect the value of parameters measured. From the ropes test it was found that  average tensile stress was 42.38 N/mm2, strain was 0.3742, ropes deformation was 35.17867 mm, elasticity was 114.1673 N/mm2 and malleability was 37.42 %. Key Words : Natural fiber, rope, inner bark of melinjo stem, spinning, tensile test.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Medan produce many sugarcane biomass everyday. To reduce environment contamination caused by sugarcane biomass, a countermeasures is needed, one of them is making recycle paper from sugarcane biomass and waste paper. The research was aimed to find the characteristics of paper based on sugarcane biomass and waste paper use with difference NaOH concentration. The research used randomized block design with sugarcane biomass concentration (0%, 50%, and 100%). Parameters measured were grammage, tensile and tearing strength. The resulting paper can be categorized as an art paper and the optimum condition to achieve best quality paper prepared from concentration of 100% pulp with grammage of 0,1456 g/m2, tensile strength of  0,1641 Mpa, and tear strength of  4,6888 N/mm.
