Abstract

The research about validation of the method of Hg determination on the sample from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) PT. Badak NGL Bontang, Kalimantan Timur using cold vapour-atomic absorption spectrophotometer (CV-AAS) techniques has been conducted. To obtain a valid measurement result, determinations of the important several parameters that influence the method validation are used. The results of research showed that 20% SnCl2 solution could be used as a reducing agent. The analytic performance of measurement obtain is good, showed with the linearity (r) value ≥ 0.995, LOD was 0.2530 ppb, LOQ was 0.8432 ppb, MDL was 0.6427 ppb and repeatability and reproducibility are shown as % RSD < 2/3 CV Horwitz values. The accuracy of this method is very good with a percentage of recovery value of 114.88%. Based on the results of this research, CV-AAS method can be used in the determination of Hg in WWTP samples with the valid results.

Abstract

Isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from ethyl acetate fraction of rhizomes of Temu Hitam (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb.) have been done. The separation of ethyl acetate fraction and further seperation were performed using gravity column chromatography with n-hexane and ethyl acetate (9.5:0.5-3:7) as solvent systems to obtain the isolate (oil;0.0216 g). Based on UV analysis of isolate, the result showed 1 peak at ? 206.14 nm. In addition, the FT-IR spectra indicated the presence of functional groups of OH, aliphatic C-H, C=O and C-O. According to the result of the UV and FT-IR spectra, the isolate can be identified as terpenoid.

Abstract

Uncaria is a genus of plants that grows in the Kalimantan forest. Many species in this genus are used as traditional medicines, so this genus is interesting to be studied for its chemical compound content. One species in this genus is Uncaria cordata which is also known as Bajakah plant. The aim of this study was to determine the content of secondary metabolite compounds and the level of toxicity of the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems on Artemia salina L. The methods used in this research were extraction, phytochemical tests and toxicity test using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems contained alkaloids, triterpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, quinones, and saponins. Furthermore, according to of the toxicity test showed that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems had toxicity level of 75.03 ppm in the toxic category (LC50 < 1000 ppm). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems has the potential to have bioactivity because it is toxic to Artemia salina L. shrimp larvae. Abstract

Extraction of asoka (Ixora coccinea L.) flowers, phytochemical screening, and antioxidant activity of methanol extract of asoka flowers have been conducted. This study aimed to determine the content of secondary metabolites in the methanol extract of asoka flowers and its antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. The phytochemical screening test revealed that the methanol extract of asoka flowers contained secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids and saponins. With 1 mg/mL, the methanol extract exhibited potential as an antioxidant with an inhibition percentage of 88.10% while vitamin C as a standard used in this study at 1 mg/mL showed an antioxidant activity of 99.23%.

Abstract

The test of Phytochemical screening and antidiabetic activity of methanol extract of bugenvil (Bougainvillea glabra Choisy) flower against α-glucosidase inhibition have been conducted. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolite compounds and the effectiveness of the methanol extract of bugenvil flower against α-glucosidase activity. Phytochemical test showed that the methanol extract contained secondary metabolite compounds namely alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, phenolics and saponins. By 50 µg/mL, the methanol extract of bugenvil flower can inhibit α-glucosidase activity with a percent inhibition value of 79.42% while acarbose as a positive control in this study exhibited antidiabetic activity against α-glucosidase of 99.30% at a concentration of 0.00006 µg/mL.

Abstract

The rhizome of Boesenbergia rotunda (temu kunci) is one of medicinal plants having potential for medicinal, supplementary food and drink due to its biological activities. The aims of this research are to identified the secondary metabolite compounds present in the dichlorometane extract of finger-root rhizomes through phytochemical screening using thin layer chromatography (TLC) method and to investigated its toxicity against Artemia salina L. shrimp larvae by using Brine Shrime Lethality Test (BSLT). The result of phytochemical analysis showed that the dichloromethane extract contains secondary metabolite compounds including flavonoids, phenolics and triterpenoids while the toxicity test of the extract showed its LC50 value of 303.68 µg/mL. It was indicated that the extract could be classified as toxic.

Abstract

Mangifera is a genus of the Anacardiaceae family of mangoes spread across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, and Bali. Several species of the genus Mangifera have been extensively researched on phytochemistry and antioxidant activity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. The study explains that several species of the genus Mangifera contain secondary metabolite compounds, such as flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, triterpenoids, and quinones. The results of several studies explain that the Mangifera genus has antioxidant activity with an inhibitory concentration (IC50) value generally <50 ppm, which is a strong category, so it has the potential to be an antioxidant. This study aimed to identify the secondary metabolite compounds contained in the dichloromethane extract with phytochemical screening and investigate its antibacterial activity against test bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATTC 25923 was carried out by agar diffusion method with modification where tetracycline as a positive control and ethanol as a negative control. The phytochemical screening showed the dichloromethane extract contains secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics and triterpenoids. With 1 mg/mL of dichloromethane extract revealed its antibacterial activity against S. aureus with inhibitory zone value of 15.0 ± 0.0 mm while its MIC value of the extract was 0.031 ± 0.0 mg/mL toward of tested bacteria. In addition, tetracycline as a positive control at 0.5 μg/mL exhibited its antibacterial potential with an inhibitory zone value of 22.0 ± 0.0 mm and its MIC value of 0.016 ± 0.577 µg/mL.
