Abstract

Background: Physical activity is important to do because a sedentary lifestyle is one of the causes of various health problems in the world. One of the importance of physical activity is to improve mental health, quality of life and well-being. Physical activity significantly has a positive impact on a person's mood. Plyometrics and aerobic exercises are popular physical activities, but comparing the effects of both in improving cognitive function, especially in the mood domain, has never been done. Objective: To analyze mood differences between the group with plyometrics exercise and the group with aerobic exercise in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University. Methods: This study is an experimental study with parallel 3 groups pre and post-test design. The research subjects were 45 UNDIP medical students who were selected by purposive sampling and grouped into 3 groups randomly. The untreated control group (n = 15), the plyometrics treatment group (n =15), and the aerobic treatment group (n = 15). The treatment group did physical activity for 6 weeks. Mood levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Profile Of Mood States (POMS). The better a person's mood, the lower the Total Mood Disorder (TMD) score is obtained. Results : TMD scores (pre-test to post-test) in the plyometrics (p <0.001) and aerobic (p = 0.001) groups both experienced a significant decrease. However, there was no significant difference between the TMD post-test scores in the plyometrics treatment group and the aerobic treatment group. Conclusion: Plyometrics and aerobic exercise has a similar effect on improving mood score.

Abstract

Background: Overweight and obesity are two health conditions that contribute to the impaired quality of life. Two parameters of obesity also indicating body composition, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), have been used as simple tools to assess abdominal visceral fats. The correlation between both measurements and visceral fats remains unclear. Objective: The study aims at demonstrating that body mass index and waist circumference may reflect visceral fats using bioelectrical impedance analysis in adolescents. Methods: First-year students of the Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University participated in the study. This cross-sectional study measured BMI, WC, mid-arm circumference (MAC), and visceral fat (VF) of 130 participants. BMI, WC, MAC, and VF were assessed using Omron digital scale, measuring tape, and body impedance analysis, respectively. Spearman test was used for the bivariate analysis while multiple regression was employed to perform multivariate analysis. Significant results were determined if p value <0.05 for the bivariates. Results: The correlation between body mass index and visceral fats showed a strong value with r: 0.794 and p-value=<0.001. The correlation between mid-arm circumference and visceral fats showed r= 0.713 and p value=<0.001. Meanwhile the correlation between waist circumference and visceral fats showed r= 0.655 and p value=<0.001. BMI and WC showed the greatest correlation to VF. The comparison between genders resulted in men having stronger relationships between BMI and VF, and WC and VF.Conclusion: BMI and waist circumference are strongly related to visceral fats based on BIA in medical students.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Malaria, caused by Plasmodium sp infection, is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality. Most experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) studies show increase number of Th1 cells and CTLs in the brain, due to increase chemokine expression, including CXCL10, a potent chemokine involved in cerebral malaria (CM). Recent studies show that CXCL10 provokes apoptosis of human brain micro-endothelial cells and in vitro neuroglia cells. Objective: To determine whether combination of Annona muricata-leaf-extracted-by-water (AME) and artemisinin-combination-therapy (ACT) reduce brain-CXCL10-expression of Swiss-mice inoculated with P. berghei ANKA (PbA). Methods: This was an experimental-study with post-test-only-control-group-design. Twenty-four Swiss-mice (PbA-inoculated) were randomly divided into 4 groups. Control group (C) was PbA inoculated only. X1, X2 and X3 groups received AME, ACT and combination of AME and ACT treatment, respectively.  CXCL10 was stained with in immunohistochemistry, which then observed by light microscope in order to determine Allred-score. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to statistically analyze the differences among groups, then followed by a Mann- Whitney U test.Result: C and X1groups had severe-PbA-infection when the study was end on day-7-PbA-infection, while X2 and X3 groups entered recovery-stage. The AME-ACT-treatment-group had significantly lower of brain-CXCL10-expression than AME-group (p=0.008) and nearly significantly lower than control-group (p=0.058). Group that received ACT alone had no different value of brain-CXCL10-expression than control-group (p=0.502) and combination AME–ACT group (p=0.335).Conclusion: The combination of AME–ACT treatment decreases brain-CXCL10-expression of Swiss-mice during PbA-infection-recovery-stage, indicating the effectivity of AME–ACT combined therapy is better prevention of cerebral malaria than AME alone.

Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency and inadequacy is a worldwide problem that can cause serious health problems. Vitamin D reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D is obtained from four sources such as sun exposure, food, supplements and fortification food. The research was conducted in October 2019. The purpose of this study was to see the stability of vitamin D3 in dadih during storage. The High Performance Liquid Chromatogaphy (HPLC) method was used to calculate vitamin D3 levels in fortified dadih. Quantification of vitamin D3 was done on day 0, day 3, day 9, day 16, day 23 and day 30. Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the level of vitamin D3 in dadih for 30 days of storage although there was a decrease in the level of vitamin D3 in dadih on the fourth week but it was not significantly (p> 0.05). In conclusion, Vitamin D3 in the dadih was stable for 30 days of storage although there was a decrease in vitamin D3 levels on the 16th and 30th days of storage due to the undetectable vitamin D3 in some samples. The addition of vitamin D3 to dadih is suggested using encapsulation techniques to increase solubility, longer shelf life, prevention of chemical degradation, better dispersibility, higher bioavailability and effectiveness.
