Abstract

Abstract

Anemia remains a critical public health issue among adolescent girls in Indonesia, particularly in semi-urban areas where data are limited. This cross-sectional study examined the association between knowledge, compliance with iron supplementation, and anemia prevalence among 60 menstruating adolescent girls aged 12–18 years in Kurao Pagang, Padang City, from August to September 2024. Data were collected via structured questionnaires assessing knowledge and compliance, alongside hemoglobin measurements to determine anemia status. Results showed that 63% of participants had high knowledge, and 68% reported compliance with supplementation, yet 25% were anemic. Anemia prevalence was significantly lower in girls with high knowledge (15.7%) compared to those with low knowledge (40.9%), with high knowledge reducing anemia risk (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08–0.84, p = 0.024). Compliance was even more strongly associated with reduced anemia prevalence (14.6% vs. 47.4%; OR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.04–0.37, p < 0.001). Despite these associations, anemia persists, indicating additional factors such as diet and socioeconomic status contribute to its prevalence. Integrated educational and supplementation interventions are vital to effectively reduce anemia among adolescent girls in similar semi-urban settings.

Abstract

Background: Natural disasters pose significant risks to vulnerable populations, particularly pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, who face increased health and safety challenges during emergencies. Strengthening disaster preparedness through accessible educational strategies is essential to improve resilience and reduce adverse outcomes. Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an Android-based application as an educational tool to enhance disaster preparedness among maternal populations. Methods: This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Borg and Gall model, followed by feasibility and effectiveness evaluation. Data were collected through interviews, validation assessments, and structured questionnaires. The application was tested among pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women using a pretest–posttest design to assess changes in disaster preparedness knowledge. Results: The developed application, named “Ibu Siaga Bencana,” demonstrated high content and media validity. Preliminary testing showed good usability and practicality. Effectiveness evaluation indicated a 40% increase in participants' disaster preparedness knowledge following application use, suggesting a substantial improvement in understanding. Conclusion: The application is a feasible and effective educational tool for improving disaster preparedness among maternal populations. Further studies with larger samples and more rigorous designs are needed to confirm its effectiveness and long-term impact.

Abstract

Background of study: Breast milk plays a crucial role in infant growth and maternal health; however, some mothers experience insufficient production due to physiological, psychological, and nutritional factors. A promising alternative to address this issue is the use of local plants with galactagogue properties, which stimulate milk production. Methods: This community service activity aimed to support breastfeeding mothers through health education with a counseling method on the importance of breastfeeding, an explanation of the benefits of beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica), and a demonstration of their preparation by boiling. Result: The results of this activity show that the majority of the 84 respondents (91.67%) felt the benefits of the counseling and demonstration on processing beluntas leaves. Evaluation results indicated that participants showed improved understanding of breastfeeding benefits and expressed interest in trying beluntas consumption at home as a natural method to increase milk supply. The integration of health education, scientific explanation, and practical demonstration effectively enhanced both knowledge and motivation among mothers. Conclusion: Therefore, the utilization of beluntas leaves has the potential to serve as a simple, applicable, and community-based intervention to promote increased breast milk production.
