Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal how significant vocabulary mastery to reading comprehension skill for non English Department of EFL Students in Batam island. Method of collecting data used in this research is series of test. They are pre-test and post test. The population of this research is about4 departments from non English major. They are about 220 samples.Method of sampling by using Taro Yamane formula. There series of test which will be applied such as Paired T- Test and Significance Test. The instrument of the reseach is pre test passage with consist of 20 questions, they are comprehension test and 10 vocabulary test and post test passage with the equal level of difficult and also consist of 10 reading comprehension questions and 10 vocabulary questions.

Abstract

This research referred to the experiences of the researchers in providing students writing courses in the context of EFL (English as Foreign Language) in Batam. It was found that students’ essay writing contained several grammatical errors to plagiarism. This study aimed to determine the level of effectiveness of written corrective feedback (WCF) on the quality of students’ essay writing. The research method was quasiexperimental where the control class was given treatment by using no WCF and the experimental class was given WCF. Both scores from control and experiment classes were different. The mean of experiment class was higher than the mean from control class. After analyzing them statistically, it was found that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It meant that WCF had a significant effect on the quality of essay writing. It was concluded that WCF is a better way in improving the quality of students' essay writing.

Abstract

Newspaper is one of an effective tool to deliverthoughts or even to get the information. The languageof journalism in the newspaper is related to the actionor opinion from people and it is conveyed into a text.This research is aimed at knowing the function of thetext by analyzing the text based on the Discourseanalysis. The researcher uses cohesion devices toanalyze the text of political news in an onlinenewspaper. Abstract

Ada beberapa permasalahan mendasar menulis seperti; kesalahan gramatikal, kohesi dan koheren, dan isi serta organisasi. Berdasarkan permasalahan yang ditemukan pada awal penelitian maka tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan kemampuan mahasiswa tahun ke-empat dalam membangun kohesi dan koheren dalam menulis essai argumentatif pada program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Bengkulu. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa tahun ke-empat program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Bengkulu yang terdaftar pada tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data diperoleh melalui test menulis essai argumentatif. Data di analisa dengan menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam membangun kohesi adalah Low Average (LA) dan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam membangun koheren adalah Low Average (LA) dimana skor rata-rata menunjukkan bahwa beberapa siswa memiliki skor dengan rentang 3-3.5 yang berarti bahwa mereka memiliki pemahaman yang rendah terhadap macam-macam kohesi dan koheren.

Abstract

Writing skills as one of the skills of language skill is a skill that must be owned by students. Material writing skills in bahasa Indonesia courses one of which is to write a paragraph of argumentation. This research aims to know the skills write a paragraph of argumentation Putera Batam University which consists of 42 people samples taken with the technique of simple random sampling. The entire sample is a two-semester student who follows the General language courses academic year 2017/2018 Indonesia. This research data is data the test writing skills. There is no preferential treatment given to a sample to see how paragraph argumentation writing skills students naturally. Based on the test results, obtained an average the value of the skills writing paragraphs students argumentation is 53.64 with standard deviation 7.14.The writing skills test results are grouped in three categories, namely category enough of 11.90%, less of 19.05% category, and the category is very less of 69.05%.It was concluded that paragraph writing skills argumentation Putera Batam University still very low so that so that the professors had to find the right method to improve the writing skills of such argumentation paragraph.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to define the lexical cohesion in the dialogue. The focus of this paper is the repetition that happens frequently in the dialogue. The dialogue is taken from the talk shows downloaded from youtube. The analysis is given based on the data from the dialogue of the speakers and draw the conclusion. This study brings benefits in building the perception of the audiences. From the data that has been analyzed, it has been found that the speakers tend to repeat the word, phrase, or sentence because they want to strengthen their opinion, eventhough from the sentence structure the repetition is not good and eficient. The result of the study also show that there are some reasons why do the speakers repeat their word. phrase or sentence such as to strengthen their opinion.

Abstract

This article provides a review from the reader's point of view of essays’ hook written by EFL students in Putera Batam University. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the effectiveness of the opening sentence which is able to attract readers to read the entire essay or perhaps ignore it altogether. By acting as a reader, the researcher then provides a review of the opening sentence in the introductory paragraph. This research uses descriptive research method. The data is taken from the student's writing task. The data are then grouped based on how to make a good hook and analyzed based on how to write a good hook. The researchers act as the reader and uses their point of view to judge an interesting hook. The results obtained from this study are 23 data hooks using questions, 17 data hooks with interesting observations, 11 data hooks had unique scenarios, 4 data hooks using famous quotes and 3 data with statistics. Furthermore, the remaining 6 data were identified not to write hooks using these five methods. From this review, it can be concluded that writing hooks is not as easy as it seems, because to attract readers' interest the writer should be able to see the hook from the reader's point of view.

Abstract

Menulis dalam bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa EFL adalah sebuah tantangan karena harus menguasai struktur kalimat dengan baik. Sehingga menulis dipandang sebagai kemampuan yang paling susah untuk dipahami. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk melihat kemampuan menulis mahasiswa EFL di kota Batam. Penelitian ini menitikberatkan kepada kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks deskripsi dalam bahasa Inggris yang ditinjau dari struktur paragraf yang mereka tuliskan. Dengan metode kualitatif, penelitian ini memiliki instrumen berupa tugas-tugas menulis teks deskripsi. Setelah data dikumpulkan maka akan dianalisis berdasarkan rubrik penilaian. Untuk menulis sebuah paragraf yang baik, maka mahasiswa diharapkan mampu menguasai struktur paragraf. Dari penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa kemampuan rata-rata menulis mahasiswa dalam konteks EFL masih berada dalam kategori yang lemah yaitu Low Average. Sedangkan untuk penguasaan kemampuan dalam menulis berdasarkan struktur kalimat sudah cukup baik walaupun masih banyak kesalahan dalam tata bahasa. Didapati bahwa dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 20% mahasiswa mendapat kriteria High Average. Kemudian hanya 10% yang mendapat kriteria Good. Selanjutnya 40% mahasiswa mendapat kriteria Low Average dan terakhir sebanyak 30% mahasiswa masih berada dalam kriteria Weak.

Abstract

Politeness can be said to be very sensitive interpersonal act carried out by someone in the form of a threat of the acting politely or not. Positive politeness influence greatly influence the attitudes and behaviors carried out by someone. Attitudes and behaviors in positive politeness are reflection of a person’s character to be good or not to others. The aimed of this research is to give an example in order to prioritize using positive politeness when speaking in any situation, including talk shows. The data were taken from the utterances in every conversation that Oprah Winfrey said with her guests. Conversation data is transcribed into written data. And analyzed qualitatively based on conversations between Oprah Winfrey and her guests Michelle Obama in Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour Talk Show. The positive politeness strategy aims to minimize the distance between Oprah Winfrey and her guests which is expected to create a sense of comfort when talking on the talk show. There are 8 strategies found in this data that categorized as positive politeness, they are: Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with hearer), intensify interest to the hearer, seek agreement (to find and try to approval by the opponent said), avoid disagreement, presuppose/rise/assert common ground, joke (make a joke), be optimistic, include both the speaker and the hearer in the activity, and give (or ask for) reason. This research also founds that payoff and circumstances become factor on why the speaker use certain positive politeness strategy. Circumstances which are found in this research are relative power and social distance.

Abstract

The aimed of this research is to find out the kind of directive acts in James Corden’s talk show on YouTube channel entitled “Spill Your Guts” and the function of those directives acts that employed by the speaker. This research was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The data sources of this research are from a talk show on James Corden’s YouTube channel which entitled “Spill Your Guts”. The data of this research was taken from the language used in conversation “Spill Your Guts”. The Researcher used the data script to analyze. The findings of the research show that there are three types of Directives acts, they are command, request, suggestion. There are 21 data that classified as command, 6 data classified as request and 8 data classified as suggestion. It can be shows that command is the most used directive acts employed by the speaker of this talk show. The reason why speaker employs directive acts in this talk show cannot be separated from the context of situations. The function of the directives performed by the speaker can be divided into four namely when the speaker wants to show his/her care about the hearer, wants to direct/instruct the hearer, wants to show his/her authority and also the speaker wants to warn the hearer.
