In Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff as the main character and ex-black widow is shown taking down the Red Room Academy and its male leader, Dreykov. This current study utilizes a poststructural feminism approach and the concept of kyriarchy in literature to reveal the poststructural feminism inclination and the portrayal of kyriarchy in the movie. This study uses poststructural feminism and Susan Fiorenza's concept of kyriarchy as the theories. In analyzing the data, this currrent study uses visual narrative approach. The analysis reveals the postructural feminisim inclinations portrayed by Natasha Romanoff in two categories, those are infiltration and act of self-sacrifice. Moreover, the portrayal of kyriarchy is revealed through the Red Room Academy's system and Dreykov's sexist belief. This explains how sexist belief and the practice of kyriarchy by Dreykov affects the women as the target of oppression. Thus, no matter what the situation is, women are always at a disadvantage.

Abstract

Every woman has different nature either being strong or being weak. Not all women have a lucky fate; in fact, many of them become the victims of men. Of the many cases of violence and sexual harassment in the world, women mostly become victims, especially in cases of sexual acts without consent. In Promising Young Woman (2020), these issues are conveyed very well. Its main character, Cassandra, carries out a mission that targets men who try to take advantage of drunken women to become deterrent and frightened. The purpose of this qualitative study on the film is aimed to discuss the behavior of radical feminism living in the character of Cassandra. Cassandra reflects a radical feminist attitude in order to achieve revenge and conveys a message about women's rights to obtain justice. Radical feminism occurs based on three key issues namely sexual objectification of women, rape, and patriarchy. The result shows that Cassandra can fully be claimed as a radical feminist because there are several characteristics of radical feminism that match the nature and behavior of Cassandra in the film, which are opposing sexual objectification of women, opposing sexism, and toxic masculinity, lastly patriarchy.

Abstract

The research focused on how the audience of gender-diverse series in Indonesia reacted to the LGBTQ+ themes broadcasted in some Netflix series aired from 2020 to 2022. It was interesting to discuss, considering that LGBTQ+ issues were still taboo, and that Indonesian society was known to be conventional and religious. By examining the audience’s reactions to the narration of LGBTQ+ themes, the research delved deeper into how Indonesian audience members problematize the LGBTQ+ issues in the Netflix series. The research was conducted with the qualitative research method by asking 70 participants, from whom validated informed consent was retrieved in advance, to answer the questions posed in the online questionnaire employed herein and by inviting them to join Zoom-mediated interviews. Three problematizations are found: Netflix’s ideology related to its LGBTQ+ content, audience perception about the LGBTQ+ community, and audience religiosity before and after watching such a series. There are also varying views on these problematizations according to the various manners in which audience members are reasoning, which are subsequently assigned to several clusters. Ultimately, such problematizations help shed light on how Netflix and its LGBTQ+ content is dynamically perceived by the audience.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of women in the mass media in a movie Under the Silver Lake (2018). This study used a qualitative method and Saussure’s semiotic theory to analyze women in the mass media in the movie, particularly on the connection between the portrayal of women and its meaning based on social conception. There are two types of mass media in the movie that are analyzed: print ads and magazines. The first focuses on the 1969 Tipalet print ads, and the second is from the 1970 Playboy magazine. The findings indicate that women in mass media are not merely portrayed as models or figures to promote a product. Instead mass media is inclined to use their portrayal as a medium to promote the ideas of women objectification. The portrayal of women in those mass media; thus, they often appear objectified, exploited, and undervalued. They are depicted in their most sexual appearance, which does not account for them as equal human beings. Such portrayals of women in conventional mass media provide the most harmful and unequal representation of women.
