Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find the differences and the causes of the changed character and setting of places in Aladdin live-action movie and The Story of Ala-ed-Din and the Wonderful Lamp (TSAWL) short story by Antonie Galland. Also, it aims at analyzing the purposes of such changes. The study is qualitative-based research, and the analysis was done by examining the intrinsic parts of the works, such us characters and the setting of places. The extrinsic approaches were employed where New Historicism was needed as a theoretical framework. The results show that the reconstruction of the character Aladdin and changing the setting of place from China to a fictional place, a city of Agrabah obviously occurs. It can be concluded that the changed has been caused by the time the story is made and the author to make the movie live in the year of its creation.

Abstract

This research focuses on the cultural alienation of an elderly Chinese immigrant narrated in Elaine Chiew’s Face (2019). Face is a story that highlights the life of Yun, an elderly Chinese woman who moves to London and feels alienated from her surroundings. To analyze the data, the descriptive qualitative method and Seeman’s theory of alienation (1959) are employed. This research discovers that alienation undergone by elderly can be resulted from powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation, and self-estrangement. Powerlessness rises when the elderly immigrants could not cope with bullying problem, while feeling meaninglessness comes from their inability in doing productive activities like what they had in their home-land. Incapability to adapt with the culture, norms, and values in the host-country results in their normlessness detaching them more from their surroundings. It worsens due to the language barrier, no same-aged friends, and geriatric bladder issues. Lastly, their social functions that do not work well lead them into self-estrangement. The findings of this research show that cultural alienation experienced by elderly immigrants could lead them into identity crisis.

Abstract

The implementation of Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (Freedom to Learn) in Indonesia urges universities to adapt and set changes in learning activities. One of the changes is the implementation of Project-Based Learning to increase students’ activeness and creativity. This research aims to assess students’ creative thinking on the implementation of Project-Based Learning. This research was a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Purposive sampling was chosen in this research because the sample was chosen on purpose, i.e., those who joined literary criticism class. There were ten students who played as the subject of the research. It used observation sheets and questionnaires to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed to get reliable results of students’ creative thinking assessment. The result showed that some students (40%) strongly agreed that they faced some difficulties in developing their creative thinking. Most of their problems were about developing ideas into coherence text, structuring or organizing a good text, and choosing appropriate vocabulary to avoid repetition in the text. Students also found that project-based learning allowed them to develop their creative thinking in forms of independence, confidence, creativity, tolerance, and leadership. Regarding the result, it can be concluded that project-based learning is proven to be beneficial in developing students’ creative thinking, though they find some obstacles during the process.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the meaning and relationship of colourwith five human emotions in the film entitled Inside Out. Inside Out is anAmerican animated film directed by Pete Docter and produced by JonasRivera, released in 2015. The qualitative method is used to evaluate thisresearch because it can be used to focus on an interpretive, naturalisticapproach to its subject matter. The primary data is taken from the filmInside Out. Secondary data would be gathered from any sources related tosemiotics theory on the relationship between colour and human emotions,as well as to eliminate unnecessary data and solidify the research. RileyAndersen, the main character, was born in Minnesota, and the fivemanifestations of emotion in her mind are Joy (yellow), Sadness (blue),Anger (red), Disgust (green), and Fear (purple). These emotions reside inRiley’s mind’s Headquarters, where they set Riley’s state of action andturn it into a memory.Therefore, each character with a specific color ischallenging to be studied further.It begins with an overview of each colorand emotion before delving into the specifics of the relationship betweenthese emotions and the colors associated with them. This study employsRoland Barthes’ semiotic theory, which has three aspects containingdenotation, connotation, and myth, interpreting signs. To learn more, it isnecessary to dig into the changing history of society’s association of thesecolors with these five emotions. Finally, this study is hoped to inspire theanimators to use specific colors to describe the characters’ emotions.

Abstract

Racism can trigger the development of an individual's resistance due to the inequality between ethnic minority and majority groups. This study aimed to discover the forms of resistance shown by Rich Brian through his Instagram account. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method by applying the resistance theory by Ellefsen, Banafsheh, and Sandberg (2022). The data source used in this research comes from Rich Brian's Instagram account with the username @brianimanuel (https://www.instagram.com/brianimanuel/). The data used in this study are verbal and visual components of Rich Brian’s Instagram posts. The results of the analysis show that the emergence of Rich Brian's resistance against racism occur after he experiences various forms of racism while being part of an ethnic minority in the United States. Rich Brian's Instagram account only displays four of the five resistance forms identified in Ellefsen et al.'s framework: ignoring, confronting, protesting, and sharing experiences. Abstract

PurposeThis research aimed to study the connection and its consequences of massive development, particularly on the urban areas, towards burrowing owl's population decline and its effect. MethodThe qualitative method was applied to assist the data analysis process in this research. The data are taken from narrative and dialogue within the story. Ecocriticism theory is also implemented to help analyze the effect of urbanization in the story. Results/findingsThe research found that urbanization has dreadful consequences on environment. Urbanization not only drives burrowing owl's decline in population, it also disrupts the food chain system, and affects the population of pest. ConclusionThe study concluded that the effects of urbanization have a broader impact for the environment. Its negative impact can cause mayhem for human life. In accordance with that, this research suggests that urbanization must be planned carefully and consider the effect for the nature and ecosystem.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine the disproportionate id and superego that results in religious trauma, which is the trigger of the Lisbon sisters to commit suicide. To conduct this research, qualitative method was used to analyze The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Sofia Coppola. Following the investigation, the researcher identified five elements that contributed to the sisters' religious trauma throughout the film.

Abstract

This study examines themes of fear in Ray Bradbury’s The Night (1946) through the experience of the main character, Shorts. Using Fisher’s theory, this study focuses into how the environmental factors and self-control regulate human emotion, especially fear. A qualitative method is applied to explore the narrative, and reveals how external elements, such as the environment and others' reactions, as well as internal elements like past events and inner thoughts, influence Shorts's fear. The findings highlight how those factors give their impact to trigger human behavior, emphasizing the complicated connection between external circumstances and internal psychological states. Through Shorts's narrative, the study underscores the dynamic interaction between the external world and human emotion.

Abstract

A majority of LGBTQ+ students experience harassment or assault based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It is as depicted in the Netflix Series entitled Heartstopper released in 2022. While the show centers on the budding romance between Nick and Charlie, it also delves into the experiences of a wider LGBTQ+ friend group. Thus, the aim of this current study is to examine the portrayal of discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ teenagers in Heartstopper Season 1 and identify its causes, including the characters of color and those identifying as lesbian and gay. The qualitative approach is used using dialogues and pictures as the main data. Besides, gender theory is also employed to analyze the data features LGBTQ+ characters and the discrimination they experience. The result shows that the discrimination comes from both racial background and general people's expectation. Also, the discrimination against gay characters arguably happens due to the rejection of the community, in this case the same-sex school community. Machoism and masculinity may become the main reasons for rejecting, and thus discriminating against gay students as they are seen as weak and thin. By revealing the causes of such discrimination, we hope that the current research may shed light on how to prevent any discrimination against each other, including people with different sexual orientation.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian audiences respond to LGBTQ+ narratives in Netflix series such as Feel Good (2020), Heartstopper (2022), and Glamorous (2023) through Stuart Hall's Audience Reception Theory. Employing a qualitative approach with 29 participants, it explores how these series influence viewers' knowledge, and awareness, particularly in relation to cultural and societal norms. The findings indicate that these narratives contribute to audience understanding across five key areas: LGBTQ+ identity and experiences, cultural and societal insights, moral lessons, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and critical perspectives on representation. Additionally, the study identifies four distinct awareness categories: recognizing LGBTQ+ individuals as human beings, understanding their experiences, acknowledging diverse gender identities, and recognizing the media’s role in shaping perceptions. These results suggest that exposure to LGBTQ+ content in streaming media can promote empathy, broaden perspectives, and challenge existing biases. By highlighting the informative and awareness-raising potential of these series, the study underscores the role of media in shaping public discourse and social attitudes toward gender and sexuality, ultimately contributing to a growing recognition of diverse identities within Indonesian society.
