Abstract

The need for fast and accurate information in crisis situations has transformed public news consumption patterns, especially with the presence of participatory journalism on social media. Instagram @infosumbar plays an important role as an alternative media based on participatory journalism that presents disaster news in West Sumatra by utilizing citizen participation. This study aims to identify audience motives in accessing news about hydrometeorological disasters in West Sumatra in November-December 2025 on Instagram @infosumbar using the uses and gratifications 2.0 MAIN Model theory by Sundar & Limperos (2013). The research method used is a descriptive quantitative survey with a purposive sampling technique to 384 respondents. The results show that agency motives are the main driver (88%), reflecting public empowerment in disseminating information, a strong sense of ownership and building a community on @infosumbar during the disaster crisis. Modality motives are in second place (86.2%), driven by public trust in the visualization of amateur video content from citizens that feels more real and like being at the scene. Furthermore, navigability (84.9%) facilitates easy access to structured disaster information, and interactivity (81%) is the most important factor, providing a responsive two-way communication with the media and other audiences. The dominance of agency demonstrates @infosumbar's success as an alternative media platform that implements participatory journalism. Infosumbar transforms social media into a disaster mitigation infrastructure by strengthening community networks and active audience engagement during emergency situations.

Abstract

This study examines the use of policy-based and character-based acclaims in the 2024 Bengkulu Regional Election Debate from the standpoint of Benoit’s Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse. The objective of the research is to examine the distribution of past deeds and future plans within policy-based acclaims, as well as personal qualities and ideals within character-based acclaims. Utilizing data obtained from two official mayoral debate sessions conducted during the 2024 Bengkulu Regional Election, a quantitative content analysis methodology was implemented. The candidate utterances were coded according to the categories of policy-based and character-based acclaims, forming the unit of analysis. Krippendorff’s Alpha was employed to evaluate intercoder reliability, which was found to be satisfactory to high. The result indicated that policy-based acclaims utilized future plans significantly more frequently than past deeds. In character-based acclaims, personal qualities were more frequently cited than ideals. During the debate, candidates primarily rely on future-oriented policy proposals and demonstrations of competence and leadership ability to construct positive self-representations and obtain voter support, according to these findings. This investigation enhances comprehension of political communication strategies utilized during regional election debates in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: Workplace safety in the field of journalism poses a challenge in practice; as cases of violence and other workplace accidents continue to occur, indicating that journalism is a high-risk profession for its workers. Although the Indonesian Television Journalists Association (IJTI), in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO), has developed and provided occupational safety and health (OSH) guidelines for television journalists, workplace accidents involving journalists still occur. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the implementation of the IJTI Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Guidelines in high-risk reporting and to explain the relationship between organizational structure and journalists’ actions in shaping safety practices. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach through a case study of the violence against Kompas TV journalists while covering the Aceh disaster relief center in December 2025. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, and were then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, with interpretations grounded in Anthony Giddens’s Theory of Structuration. Results: The study found that the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Guidelines did not occur as a process of compliance with procedures, but rather as a practice that is continuously negotiated through the interaction between organizational rules, newsroom culture, journalists’ reflective capacity, and the dynamics of reporting. This study produced the concept of “Safety negotiation,” which consists of five dimensions: risk negotiation, editorial negotiation, operational negotiation, external negotiation, and professional negotiation. Conclusion: This study concludes that journalist safety is an ongoing process of negotiation shaped by organizational structures, the reflective actions of journalists, and field dynamics rather than merely a matter of adherence to formal procedures. Implications: These findings underscore the need for media organizations to strengthen adaptive safety governance through open communication, cross-functional coordination, and continuous evaluation of high-risk reporting.
