Abstract

Copal is originated from the exudate of Agathis loranthifolia tree, which flows out from tapping. copal is one of Indonesia's export comodities. Unfortunately, since the export was still in the form of raw materials, it was necessary to study the identification of resin acid content of the copal of Sukabumi. It was also necessary to test the quality of the copal. Extraction was done by using acetone: MeOH (9:1) solvent. Then the extraction of resin acid content was identified by using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (CGMS). The quality of copal was evaluated based on SNI 7634-2011. Resin acids of the copal which were identified by CGMS are limonene (44%), ethylene oxide hexamer, cis-limonene oxide, toluene, trans-carveol, 2-siclohexane-1-one, trans-limonene oxide, and alpha pinene. Copal of Sukabumi belong to the first class, because the obtained parameters are not all included in the premier class ranges. However it is still possible to be upgraded to their premier class by removing the dirt. Keywords : Agathis loranthifolia, copal, limonene, resin acids.

Abstract

The Indonesian government manages the health and environment of students through the post-Islamic boarding school program. However, it has not run optimally due to students' lack of knowledge and literacy on personal and environmental sanitation. This study identified the knowledge about an environmental-based sanitation approach among students at boarding schools. The study was conducted in October 2021 using the principle of the pre-post test method based on an intervention study. The students who participated in this study were 70 female students of Junior and Senior High School levels. The students were given practical training regarding the concept and benefits of 'clean and healthy living behavior' (CHLB), infectious skin diseases, the status of waste management, and health and environmental issues resulting from burning waste. The statistical analysis uses Chi-square descriptive analysis. There was an increase in the post-test results compared to the pre-test by 5% for students' understanding of the definition of CHLB and 60% for students' understanding of air pollution reduction efforts from the students' point of view. The students understand learning environment-based sanitation through practical intervention.

Abstract

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) presents notable benefits, such as environmental sustainability, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and scalability for industrial applications. This study utilized green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis), which are abundant in catechins and polyphenols, as natural reducing and stabilizing agents. Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis was utilized to improve extraction and reduction processes, as acoustic cavitation induced by ultrasonic waves facilitates efficient mass transfer, accelerates nucleation, and enhances nanoparticle dispersion. This method provides an environmentally sustainable and economically viable alternative to conventional AgNP synthesis, enhancing the sustainability of nanoparticle production. The successful synthesis of AgNP was evidenced by the distinct color change of the tea extract from green to brown, accompanied by the formation of a brown colloidal suspension, in accordance with the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) phenomenon. The UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis confirmed AgNP formation, evidenced by a characteristic absorption peak at approximately 430 nm. The synthesized AgNPs were utilized as a colorimetric sensor for Fe³⁺ ions in aqueous solutions, demonstrating distinct color changes and SPR band shifts upon interaction with the metal. This illustrates their capability as environmentally friendly nanomaterials for the swift and precise detection of heavy metals, aiding in sustainable environmental monitoring. This research integrates ultrasonic-assisted synthesis with green tea extract, presenting a viable approach for the large-scale, environmentally sustainable production of nanoparticles.

Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable bioactive materials has expedited the advancement of green extraction technologies sourced from renewable natural resources. This research systematically evaluates Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) and Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) for the recovery of bioactive compounds from Spatholobus littoralis Hassk (bajakah root) utilising ethanol. The extraction performance was assessed based on yield, total phenolic content, and physicochemical characteristics. The findings indicated that MAE exhibited superior extraction efficiency and enhanced physicochemical properties relative to UAE. The biological functionality of the extracts was assessed using an anti-termite assay. Bajakah root extracts, derived through MAE, were evaluated at concentrations of 1.5% and 2.5%. A commercial termiticide (Permise®) served as a positive control, while 70% ethanol acted as a solvent control, and untreated samples were designated as a negative control. The anti-termite assay demonstrated that both extract concentrations resulted in complete termite mortality within 2 days, while the positive control took up to 5 days and the untreated group required up to 7 days. The findings indicate the efficacy of S. littoralis root extract as a natural bioactive agent and underscore MAE as a reliable and sustainable extraction method for the advancement of multifunctional green materials.
