Abstract

The health condition of mangrove forests can be determined by assessing forest health indicators. One of the indicators used in determining the health of mangrove forests is faunal biodiversity. Measurement of forest health is a step that can be taken to ensure forest functions and benefits. The study's objectives were to determine the composition of mangrove species and mangrove forest fauna (birds and epifauna), to determine the structure of the fauna community which includes species diversity and species dominance and to determine the health condition of mangrove forests on Moti Island, Ternate Island District. This research was conducted on Moti Island, Moti District, Ternate City, North Maluku Province for six months, April - September 2021. A Sampling of mangroves was carried out using the "spot check" method. Meanwhile, the method used to assess mangroves' health condition refers to the FHM (Forest Health Monitoring) method. There are nine species of mangrove, namely Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Sonneratia alba, Xylocarpus granatum, Avicennia offincinalis, A. marina and Nypa fruticans. While the composition of fauna species is as many as 18 species consisting of Epifauna (Gastropoda = 12 species, Bivalve = 2 species) and birds as many as four species. The diversity of mangrove forest fauna species in all research locations is moderate and no species dominate. The health status of mangrove forests, both Tafaga and Figur villages, has 60% good condition, 20% moderate and poor conditions.

Abstract

Gastropods are included in the mollusk phylum which is known to be well-associated with seagrass ecosystems. The gastropod community is an important component in the food chain in seagrass beds and ecologically seagrass beds have an important role in the ecosystem. Seagrass ecosystems are habitats and food sources for fish and other aquatic biota. One of the biota commonly found in seagrass beds is Gastropods. This study was conducted to know the composition of gastropod species, types of gastropod associations, and gastropod microhabitat niches in seagrass ecosystems on Donrotu Island. Gastropod sampling was carried out at low tide. The gastropod samples found were then put into a plastic bag that already contained a label. Furthermore, the gastropod samples were brought ashore to count the number of individuals of each type and determined based on morphological characteristics such as shell shape, shell color, shell mouth opening, and spiral circle based on Dharma (1992) instructions. Based on the results of the study, the composition of the types of gastropods found in the seagrass ecosystem on the island of Donrotu was as many as 13 species. There were 13 pairs of gastropod types that had positive associations and 65 pairs of no associations. The type of gastropod that has the widest habitat niche is Cypraea tigris and the narrowest are Naticarius coillei and Pseudovertagus aluco.

Abstract

Coconut crabs (Birgus latro) is a fishery resource that is only found in eastern Indonesia, and the waters of Ternate City are an area that has this potential.  This research aims to determine the size distribution and habitat characteristics of coconut crabs in Tomajiko, Hiri Island District. The data collection method consists of several stages, namely determining stations, distributing bait, catching coconut crabs, morphometric measurements, and observing environmental parameters. Determination of stations in this study was carried out based on topographic differences in Tomajiko (divided into two stations). Coconut crab catching uses the roaming survey method. The bait used is coconut meat that has been split into several parts and coconut meat that has been mashed. The morphometric dimensions measured were chest length (carapace length) and body weight. The habitat characteristics observed were the type and extent of vegetation, organic matter content and substrate texture, environmental parameter measurements (soil temperature, air humidity and soil pH). The results of the research showed that the coconut crabs caught at both stations had relatively the same length, but the largest weight was found at station 2. Habitat characteristics in Tomajiko, Hiri Island strongly support the survival of coconut crabs.

Abstract

Macrozoobenthos are benthic animals commonly found in substrate-based ecosystems, such as mangrove forests. Their presence in mangrove ecosystems significantly influences the decomposition activities within the substrate or sediment layers. The aim of this study was to identify species composition, species density, community structure of macrozoobenthos, and their vertical distribution within sediments on mangrove ecosystem in Ternate City. The study was conducted from August to September 2021 using the line transect method, with macrozoobenthos samples collected through iron pipe corers. Data analysis included species density, species diversity, dominance index, evenness index, niche width, microhabitat niche overlap, and the relationship between macrozoobenthos density and depth. The results showed that the macrozoobenthos species composition consisted of two species (Uca spp. and Nereis spp.), with a total of 25 individuals. Species diversity within mangrove ecosystem was found to be low, with one dominant species and a relatively even distribution. The species with the broadest habitat niche was the worm (Nereis spp.), while significant microhabitat niche overlap occurred between the worm (Nereis spp.) and the crab (Uca spp.). Simple linear regression analysis indicated that substrate depth did not correlate with macrozoobenthos species density. Keywords:aquaticbenthoscoastalfaunaterrestrial
