Abstract

Background:Female puberty starts when the pituitary hormone producing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which will stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen. Delayed puberty with primary amenorrhea in female is the lack of breast development followed by the absence of menses 3 years after the initiation of breast development. Sex chromosomes have an important role in determining the sex, germ cell differentiation of foetus, and reproductive functions of an offspring, thus, sex chromosomal aberrations frequently cause primary amenorrheaCase presentation: We report two delayed puberty cases with the chief complain of primary amenorrhea. Both cases showed hypoplasia of uterus and ovaries on pelvic imaging and hormonal assay showed low of FSH. The first case was gonadal dysgenesis with 46,XX karyotype and low level of estrogen and the second case was a turner syndrome with 45,X karyotype and normal level of estrogen. Conclusion:This study reported delayed puberty with primary amenorrhea cases due to different chromosomal aberration pattern which have similar clinical features. Therefore, cytogenetic examination is needed for any primary amenorrhea cases in order to accomplish the confirmatory diagnosis and for the clinicians to make a correct intervention and treatment.

Abstract

Alzheimer's dementia can occur due to an increase in the neurotransmitter glutamate which can affect synaptic plasticity. Centella asiatica (L.) Urban is considered as one of the herbal plants used in the treatment of various diseases, such as medicine for leprosy, thrush, fever, hypertension, diabetes, and anemia and has a high antioxidant effect, one of the active ingredients is asiatic acid. This research to determine asiatic acid potential for NMDA receptors in Alzheimer's dementia. This research is an experimental research using a computer. The applications used were PyMOL for ligand preparation, PyRx for docking, and LigPlot for amino acid residue analysis. The interaction of receptor ligand binding is seen from the binding affinity score, the smaller the binding affinity score, the greater the potential between the ligand-receptors to interact. The pharmacokinetics of a compound are based on Lipinski's rule. In this study, the binding affinity score of - 8.3 was obtained and the Lipinski test showed the result of 'yes'.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide, causing approximately two million deaths annually. Multidrug resistance presents a significant global challenge in TB treatment, necessitating prolonged medication use and extended treatment durations. There is an urgent need to discover alternative novel antimicrobial compounds. Herbal medicine offers promising prospects for drug discovery and development, warranting the screening of plant-derived compounds with favorable safety margins. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of extracts from five medicinal plants against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. Methods: Extracts from five herbs —Morinda citrifolia L, Nicotiana spp.L, Centella asiatica L, Allium sativum L, and Annona muricata L, —were investigated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against M. tuberculosis using Lowenstein-Jensen medium. Antimicrobial activity was assessed by comparing bacterial colony growth on extract-containing media with that on extract-free control media. The agar dilution method was used to determine antimicrobial activity. Results: Among the tested extracts, Nicotiana spp L and Annona muricata L exhibited the strongest antimicrobial activity. These herbs contain various bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroids, which are presumed to contribute to bacterial susceptibility. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Nicotiana spp. L. and Annona muricata L. may have therapeutic potential in TB treatment. These herbs could serve as alternative agents for combating TB and may help mitigate the adverse effects associated with standard anti-tuberculosis drugs.

Abstract

Iron deficiency is a significant nutritional challenge for women of reproductive age, especially those who follow a vegetarian diet. Ferritin, as a key indicator of iron reserves, plays an important role in diagnosing latent iron deficiency, which can negatively affect reproductive health, including causing menstrual disorders. This study compares ferritin levels and the incidence of menstrual disorders between 50 vegetarian and 50 non-vegetarian women aged 18–45 years in Denpasar City. Ferritin levels were measured using the ELISA method, while data on menstrual disorders were collected through the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ). The data were analyzed using independent t-tests, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression (α=0.05). The study found that the average ferritin level in vegetarian women (21.4 µg/L) was significantly lower than in non-vegetarian women (36.9 µg/L; p<0.001), and the prevalence of menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea and irregular cycles was higher among vegetarians. Logistic regression analysis confirmed that a vegetarian diet (odds ratio [OR]=2.98; p=0.014) and ferritin levels below 30 µg/L (OR=3.62; p=0.007) were significant predictors of menstrual disorders. Thus, a vegetarian diet and low ferritin levels are identified as key risk factors for menstrual disorders in women of reproductive age. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring ferritin status and applying appropriate nutritional strategies for vegetarian women to help support optimal reproductive health.
