Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Knisley learning model based on Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) on students’ problem-solving and numeracy skills, while also examining the contribution of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) to these outcomes. The research employed a quantitative approach with a 2×3 factorial design under a quasi-experimental method. The sample consisted of 60 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental class (taught using the Knisley model with MEAs) and a control class (taught using conventional teacher-centered methods). Data were collected through problem-solving and numeracy tests, along with an SRL questionnaire. The results showed that the Knisley learning model with MEAs significantly improved students' problem-solving and numeracy abilities compared to conventional methods. The average posttest scores in the experimental group were 83.87 for problem-solving and 79.73 for numeracy, both higher than the control group. Additionally, students with high SRL levels performed better across both domains. However, no significant interaction effect was found between the learning model and SRL levels. These findings suggest that problem-based learning approaches such as MEAs and independent learning strategies like SRL contribute separately to improved student learning outcomes. The study recommends implementing contextual, activity-based learning models alongside SRL reinforcement to enhance mathematics instruction.

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking ability is one of the important competencies in mathematics learning that must be possessed by 21st-century students. However, the results of the study indicate that students' mathematical critical thinking ability is still low and the teaching materials used are less varied, so that learning is less than optimal. Therefore, this study aims to develop a video-assisted flipbook-based e-module to improve mathematical critical thinking ability. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects of the study were eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sidomulyo, with classes selected using the Cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews, validation questionnaires, interestingness questionnaires and tests with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The test instrument was compiled based on indicators of critical thinking ability which include interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The results of the feasibility test by the material expert validator were 3.73, and the media expert validator were 3.37 with the criteria of "valid". The students' responses in the small group test were 3.39 and the large group 3.48 with the criteria of "very interesting". The N-Gain result of 0.72 with the category of "high" and the effect size of 0.74 with the category of "moderate" indicates that the e-module is effective and has a strong influence in improving mathematical critical thinking skills. Thus, the video-assisted flipbook-based e-module is feasible, interesting, and effective in improving mathematical critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Background: Numeracy literacy is a fundamental competency that enables prospective mathematics teachers to interpret, analyze, and apply mathematical knowledge in authentic contexts. However, conventional mathematics instruction often emphasizes procedural proficiency rather than contextual reasoning, resulting in limited numeracy literacy development. Integrating constructivist learning with technology-enhanced instruction offers a promising approach to addressing this challenge. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Learning Cycle 9E model integrated with instructional videos in enhancing the numeracy literacy of prospective mathematics teachers. Method: A quasi-experimental study employing a pretest–posttest control group design was conducted with 50 undergraduate students enrolled in the Mathematics Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung, Indonesia. Participants were assigned to an experimental group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk and Levene’s tests, normalized gain (N-Gain), an independent samples t-test, and Cohen’s d effect size. Results: The experimental group outperformed the control group, achieving a higher posttest mean score (84.16 vs. 71.04) and N-Gain (0.62 vs. 0.31). A significant difference was identified between the groups (t = 6.485, p < .001), accompanied by a large effect size (d = 1.84). Conclusion: Integrating the Learning Cycle 9E model with instructional videos effectively enhances numeracy literacy by fostering active knowledge construction, contextual mathematical reasoning, and meaningful technology-enhanced learning experiences in higher mathematics education.

Abstract

This study examines differences in students’ mathematical conceptual understanding across instructional conditions, the role of self-efficacy in mathematical conceptual understanding, and the interaction between the GeoGebra assisted MASTER learning model and self-efficacy. The study used a quantitative, quasi-experimental design. The study population is all grade VIII students of Public Junior High School (SMP Negeri) 1 Bukit Kemuning. The sample comprised two experimental classes and one control class selected through cluster random sampling. Data were obtained using a mathematical conceptual understanding test and a self-efficacy questionnaire. The mathematical topic was circles. The intervention was conducted for five sessions in each class, with each session lasting 2 × 45 minutes. The data were first examined for normality and homogeneity before testing the hypotheses using two-way ANOVA in a 3 × 3 factorial design. The findings showed significant differences in students’ mathematical conceptual understanding across instructional conditions (p < .001). Self-efficacy was also significantly related to students’ mathematical conceptual understanding (p < .001). However, the interaction between the learning model and self-efficacy was not statistically significant (p = .170). Thus, the GeoGebra-assisted MASTER learning model may serve as an alternative instructional approach to support students’ mathematical conceptual understanding.
