Abstract

Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) is an aquatic plant belonging to a weed that thrives in lakes and rivers throughout Indonesia. The water hyacinth plant was later categorized as a pest because it was considered a threat to the ecosystem by reducing the number of native species and causing negative impacts on socio-economic aspects such as silting of waters, destruction of fishery habitats and being one of the factors for flooding with overflowing river water. In addition, the process of cleaning water hyacinth by the local government janitor results in the buildup of water hyacinth on the shoulder of the road, making the environment look dirty and slum as well as narrowing access to vehicle paths which results in congestion. Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) is a plant that becomes aquatic waste and its presence has not been widely used (Megawati 2015: 42). The purpose of this PKM is how to overcome water hyacinth problems and utilize water hyacinth as fertilizer. The method used in this PKM activity is by making direct observations to the partner's place in Puri Taman Sari, Kec. Tamalate Makassar City, which was then continued by conducting training to local community groups regarding the processing of water hyacinth into fertilizer using the composting method. The activity was carried out by dividing the residents into several small groups and each group being given technical training in making tools and how to process water hyacinth into fertilizer. By processing water hyacinth by residents, it produces 2 (two) types of fertilizers, namely in solid form (compost) and in liquid form which have been tested on residents' plants. From this activity, solutions have been found on how to overcome the problem of environmental pollution by water hyacinth and become effective and useful goods for the community.

Abstract

Every year, a large number of senior university students in Indonesia will/ have experience in conducting qualitative research. Some of them choose qualitative research because they understand that their questions only can be answered through qualitative research. While the rest of them only see that qualitative research is may be simpler than quantitative research because no need to calculate the numbers and do statistical trial. Unfortunately, many of these students who start their new role as novice researchers don’t have sufficient knowledge on some issues before doing this research. This paper aims to provide clear and practical elaboration of some principles in qualitative research which are frequently absent and become the common malpractices by novice researchers. Some practical solutions are discussed as well. In the end, conducting ideal qualitative research in Indonesia is not only the responsibility of expert researchers but also stakeholders, lecturers, and students.

Abstract

Long-distance learning uses an online platform to transfer the knowledge. It has become a breakthrough in this modern era. The online learning brings many benefits to students, but it is also challenging to be implemented by the tutors in distance education universities. This paper tends to investigate the use of the guided-discovery learning (GDL) method in the psycholinguistics online tutorial class. The participants are the students of the English Education program in Universitas Terbuka, who take Psycholinguistics subject with online tutorial service. The methodology of this research is qualitative by using a case study. The researchers use the WhatsApp application as the platform in conducting the course. The students are required to follow the lesson step by step through WhatsApp. Based on the finding, this research reveals that there are two perspectives of the use of GDL toward psycholinguistics online tutorial class. The first perspective is in students that has two major advantages. The second can be seen from the learning perspective which also has two benefits of the use of GDL.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal students' understanding of prepositions and describe the types that often confuse students. Field research is the activity of collecting baseline data for research purposes. This research was conducted using tests, questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation. In this method, the author gives a test essay consisting of 30 questions. The test was given to 50 Xi SMA Hang Tuah Makassar class students to determine their understanding of English prepositions. The author proposes a questionnaire that attempts to identify the methods of language learning by students and the experience of students in learning languages. The author presents a questionnaire that attempts to identify the processes of language learning by students and the experience of students in learning languages.A preposition is a type of adjective that usually precedes its object. Prepositional properties include words expressing spatial relationships, such as y, in, on, under, over, too, from, through, etc. A noun always follows prepositions. These conjunctions show the relationship between the nouns that follow them and one of the main elements of the sentence. The noun or pronoun after the preposition is the object. The pronoun used in this position is always the object pronoun. This study showed that the average yield. of the correct answer for prepositions of place using in, on, and at can be calculated as 368/50 = 7.36. The result of using the wrong preposition is 382/50 = 7.64. These calculations show that the number of respondents who do not know how to use prepositions correctly is more excellent than those who do. Overall, this study shows that students' ability to use the prepositions in, on, and at to indicate time and place still needs to improve. But the average difference between correct and incorrect use is minimal. In other words, the results show that the ability to use prepositions in the XI SMA Hang Tuah Makassar class as respondents in this study were average.

Abstract

The article was to determine the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning in distance learning system. The method used qualitative research with a field study design. Collecting data through observation and interview. This research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar with twenty English teachers. The results showed that the HOTS-based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning within a distance learning system was carried out effectively by the English teachers. However, there were several challenges encountered during implementation, including technological limitations. Distance learning requires a stable internet connection and adequate devices, but not all students have good access to the internet, which can hinder teachers in effectively conducting speaking and reading assessments. Additionally, not all students have sufficient audio or video devices to participate in speaking assessments, which can hinder their ability to practice speaking clearly and listen well. Furthermore, there were challenges in providing direct and individual feedback in distance learning. In speaking assessments, timely and direct feedback is crucial for students to correct mistakes and improve their speaking skills. However, in distance learning, feedback was often given in written form or through recorded videos, which can result in delays and limit students' opportunities for improvement. Abstract
