Abstract

This study addresses the erosion of religious harmony and tolerance in Indonesia, caused by various factors, including religiously motivated conflicts and radicalism. Despite government efforts to promote a harmonious religious life through regulations, conflicts persist, leading to discomfort and disharmony. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach and document analysis, focusing on government regulations, the concept of religious harmony, and theological perspectives from various religions on interfaith harmony. The study finds that the essence of religious harmony lies in mutual recognition, respect, and tolerance of different beliefs and practices. The goal of religious harmony is to establish peaceful relationships, mutual respect, and support for the existence of other religious communities. The concept of Tri Kerukunan Umat Beragama (Threefold Religious Harmony) includes internal religious harmony, interfaith harmony, and harmony between religious communities and the government. Factors contributing to religious conflicts include exclusivist attitudes, rejection of differences, and intolerance. The government has established the Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama (FKUB) to address these issues. Theological perspectives from various religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism) support the concept of religious harmony and moderation as paths to achieving peace. The implementation of religious moderation, which balances exclusivity and inclusivity, is crucial for fostering religious harmony and tolerance in Indonesia’s plural and multicultural society. This research contributes by providing a theological and practical framework for promoting peace and tolerance in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Christian mission in Indonesia faces significant challenges amid the country's cultural, religious, and social diversity. With a majority Muslim population, it is crucial for the church to listen to both the voice of God and the voice of humanity in carrying out its mission. This study aims to explore how the Christian mission can be more effective by integrating these two aspects: listening to the voice of God through spiritual teaching and addressing the social needs of the community. The concept of a vulnerable mission, which prioritizes responsiveness to social and cultural challenges, forms the basis of this study. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews with church leaders, missionaries, and community members, as well as document analysis to understand the application of both aspects in the diverse Indonesian context. The research findings indicate that successful Christian missions in Indonesia are those that can integrate spiritual aspects with social empowerment, thereby strengthening the church's relationship with the local community. The contribution of this research is the development of mission theory with a more inclusive and culturally sensitive approach. These findings are expected to provide insights for churches in Indonesia and similar countries in designing more adaptive, holistic, and relevant mission strategies.

Abstract

The role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus has often been overshadowed by the church’s focus on Jesus’ divine nature, resulting in an underdeveloped pneumatological dimension in Christology. This article addresses this gap by examining Luke-Acts as a unified narrative that portrays Jesus as both the unique bearer of the Spirit “without measure” (John 3:34, a Johannine echo that Luke implicitly affirms) and the giver of the Spirit to the church. Through a narrative-theological and redaction-critical method, the study analyzes key Lukan passages—the annunciation, the baptism, the Nazareth sermon, the resurrection, and the ascension—to demonstrate that Luke intentionally presents Jesus’ anointing as the model for the church’s reception of the Spirit. The findings reveal that Jesus’ possession of the Spirit is not merely functional or temporary but constitutive of his messianic identity as the second Adam and the true Israel. Furthermore, the same Spirit who empowers Jesus for prophetic mission is poured out at Pentecost, establishing the church as a community of Spirit-anointed witnesses. The article contributes to Lukan pneumatology and Spirit Christology by arguing that the “measure” of the Spirit in Jesus’ life is the norm for Christian initiation, and that the church’s missional identity is a direct extension of Jesus’ own anointing. This integrative model challenges both the reduction of Spirit reception to conversion and the separation of Jesus’ anointing from the church’s empowerment.
