Abstract

Kabori Lagoon is a lagoon located in Manokwari Regency, West Papua, where the water quality data is still very limited. Chlorophyll-a is the most important photosynthetic pigment for aquatic plants such as phytoplankton. The purpose of this study was to determine the horizontal distribution of chlorophyll-a based on the spatial data approach in the waters of the Kabori Lagoon. The study was conducted from April to May 2019. The sampling point was determined by purposive sampling at eight points for sampling of chlorophyll-a and water parameters including physics and chemistry (temperature, DO, salinity, brightness and depth). Measurement of physical and chemical parameters is carried out in situ. Chlorophyll-a analysis was carried out at the Laboratory of Water Productivity and Quality, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, Hasanuddin University. Spatial data processing used ArcGIS 10.4 and Surfer 16 to create chlorophyll-a distribution maps and bathymetry. The results showed that the chlorophyll-a content in Observation I was in the range of 0.12-2.40 mg/m3 and in Observation II it was in the range of 1.43-10.84 mg/m3. Based on the chlorophyll-a content, the Kabori Lagoon is included in the mesotrophic category. Spatially, the distribution of chlorophyll-a content varies, but tends to be higher in the southern part of the lagoon than in the northern part of the lagoon. Abstract

The zooplankton ecological index which includes diversity, uniformity and dominance is one approach used to determine the condition of the aquatic environment. This study aims to determine the environmental status of the waters based on zooplankton ecological index which includes diversity, uniformity, and dominance in Doreri Bay water, Manokwari. This study was conducted in September 2020 at two 5- and 10-meter stations depth from the water's surface. Water quality measurements and water sampling were carried out at both stations thrice for 1 week. Water sampling to determine individual zooplankton used a 5 L volume Van Dorn. Temperature, salinity, and pH of the waters were measured successively using a rod-type thermometer with a 50 °C scale, a handheld refractometer RHSN-10ATC, and a pH meter of Orion A215 type. The measurement results obtained the temperature, salinity, and pH values ranging from 29.1 – 29.9 °C with an average of 29.5 °C, 30 – 35 ppt with an average of 33.2 ppt, and 7.9 – 8.3 with an average of 8.1, respectively. The diversity, uniformity, and dominance indexes ranged from 1.5 – 2.2, 0.7 – 1.0, and 0.1 – 0.4, respectively. The ecological status of Doreri Bay waters based on the diversity, uniformity, and dominance indexes show that the components of the food chain are still complete, including the producer and consumer groups and reducers. The effect of liquid waste from land activities around the bay has not disturbed the zooplankton.

Abstract

Plankton in aquatic ecosystems has a very important role, especially in the food chain, because plankton is the main producer that makes the largest contribution to the total primary productivity of an aquatic area. This Field Work Practice aims to determine the species and abundance of plankton that is good and correct according to widely used standards. This Field Work Practice was carried out on 10 January – 10 February 2023. Determination of field work practice stations using the purposive sampling method at 1 location and three plankton sampling points. In situ measurement of water quality parameters includes temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH and salinity. Plankton samples were identified and analyzed at the Aquatic Resources Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Papua. The results of field work practice obtained eight classes of plankton and classes consisting of 33 genera. Phytoplankton found 29 genera from 5 classes namely Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Dinophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, And Zooplankton found 3 classes consisting of 4 genera, namely Scyphozoa, Copepoda, Eurotatoria. The highest abundance of Phytoplankton was at seagrass points, namely 1005 Sel/L, coral reefs 637.5 Sel/L and mangroves 530 Sel/L. The highest abundance of Zooplankton was found in seagrasses around 40 individu/L, coral reefs with 10 individu/L, and mangroves with 0 individu/L.
