Abstract

The diversity of endemic fish in Indonesia has great potential to be developed into export commodities that can increase the country's foreign exchange earnings. This is supported by the increasing fish farming industry in Indonesia, both for consumption of fish and ornamental fish. In 2018, Indonesia's ornamental fish export volume increased to 257,862,207 fish, with export destinations including China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, South Korea, and several other countries. Corydoras venezuela Corydoras aeneus is one of the ornamental fish species with great potential to be cultivated as an aquaculture commodity while also meeting the export market demand, in addition to being marketed domestically. Currently, the aquaculture technology for Corydoras venezuela has not been widely disseminated to the public, making the information limited to a small group of ornamental fish farmers. Therefore, studies are needed to widely distribute technical information on its cultivation so that it can serve as a reference for aquaculture business operators and ornamental fish hobbyists in managing fish farming effectively. The natural and mass spawning of Corydoras venezuela follows a sex ratio of 2 males to 1 female. The eggs of Corydoras venezuela are sticky and cling to surfaces. They typically hatch on the third day after incubation, with a success rate of around 70% to 75%. The cultivation of Corydoras venezuela occurs in two phases: the initial and secondary nursery stages. During these periods, the fry were fed natural diets such as Artemia and tubifex worms, offered freely. The study recorded an average fry survival rate of 85% to 90%. Once grown, the fish are sold, with Bandung, West Java, serving as the main market.

Abstract

Betta splendens is an ornamental fish with a variety of color variations, which is one of the main factors determining its selling value. One of the variants of hippopotamus, which is currently in great demand by ornamental fish enthusiasts, is the multicolor hippopotamus. During maintenance, cupang fish often experience a decrease in color quality caused by internal and external factors. One of the efforts to improve color quality is to supplement the feed with ingredients rich in pigments, such as shrimp head flour (TKU), which contains carotenoids. This study aimed to improve the brightness and color performance of hippopotamus by adding shrimp head meal to commercial feed. The method used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments, namely, control, 5% TKU, 10% TKU, and 15% TKU, each with three replicates. The research procedure included the preparation of shrimp head meal, mixing feed with TKU, fish rearing, and observation of changes in color brightness, weight and length growth, survival rate, and water quality. The results showed that the utilization of shrimp head meal supplemented into the feed improved the performance of brightness and color patterns in multi-colored cupang fish, including length gain during the treatment, with optimum results shown in the 10% TKU treatment.

Abstract

The leading cause of the high price of fish feed is the increase in the price of raw feed material. One way to reduce the dependence on relatively expensive raw materials is to utilize alternative raw materials, such as tofu dregs. This research was conducted to evaluate the influence of including tofu dregs in feed on the technical coefficient of tilapia cultivation. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and three replicates: AP8020 (80% tofu dregs + 20% pellets), AP6040 (60% tofu dregs + 40% pellets), AP4060 (40% tofu dregs + 60% pellets), and K (100% pellets as a control). Duncan's further test was conducted to determine the best treatment between treatments. The results showed that mixing 40% tofu dregs with 60% tilapia pellets (AP4060) could increase the increase in Absolute Length, Absolute Weight Gain, Specific Weight Growth Rate, and feed conversion ratio by 15.80 cm, 291.27 gr, 5.74%, and 0.71, respectively. The conclusion of the study shows that mixing tofu dregs and pellets affects the technical coefficient of tilapia growth compared to the control (100% pellets) in the best treatment AP4060 (40% tofu dregs + 60% pellets).

Abstract

Background: The increasing demand for aquaculture production requires the use of foods that not only meet nutritional needs but also promote fish health. The use of natural food additives has become an important alternative to reduce dependence on synthetic antibiotics. One of the most extensively studied natural food additives is garlic (Allium sativum). Garlic has been found to eliminate major pathogenic bacteria, strengthen immunity, improve health status, enhance growth, and increase flesh quality in freshwater fish. With its multifunctional properties, garlic represents a promising functional feed additive to enhance growth performance, food utilization, and stress resistance in cultured fish.Aims: This article was prepared using a systematic literature-review approach on the effects of garlic supplementation in aquaculture feeds. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted for articles published within the last ten years in Scopus‐or SINTA‐indexed journals. The review included: (1) experimental studies investigating the effects of garlic supplementation in fish feed or rearing media; (2) studies involving growth, physiological, immune, or water quality parameters; and (3) articles focusing on aquaculture species such as tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), rohu (Labeo rohita), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and groupers (Epinephelus spp.).Results: The evidence has been shown that garlic can enhance growth performance, food efficiency, and immune response in fish, particularly in species such as tilapia, carp, rainbow trout, rohu and grouper. The effective dosage generally ranges between 0.5–3% garlic powder in food, with variations depending on species and application methods.Conclusion/ Recommendation: Future studies should focus on developing probiotic–herbal feed products based on fermented garlic and assessing the economic and social feasibility of natural phytobiotic applications in intensive aquaculture systems.

Abstract

Background: Live feed is a critical factor in the successful rearing of African catfish (Clarias sp.) larvae, particularly during the early developmental. Tubificid worms (Tubifex sp.) are commonly used as live feed due to their high protein content; however, their nutritional value can be further improved through enrichment techniques.Aims: This study evaluated the effects of vitamin C-enriched Tubifex worms on the growth performance and survival of African catfish larvae. Methods: A completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of three treatments and three replications was employed: unenriched Tubifex worms (control), enrichment with 2.5 g L⁻¹ vitamin C (A), and enrichment with 3.5 g L⁻¹ vitamin C (B). Data on survival rate (SR), specific growth rate (SGR), and growth rate (GR) were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan's multiple range test at a 95% confidence level. Seven-day-old larvae were reared for seven days and fed enriched worms according to the respective treatments. Growth performance was assessed using survival rate (SR), specific growth rate (SGR), and growth rate (GR).Results: The results showed that vitamin C enrichment significantly affected (P < 0.05) the survival rate, specific growth rate, and growth rate of African catfish larvae. The treatment enriched with 2.5 g L⁻¹ vitamin C produced the highest survival rate (86.67 ± 12.09%), specific growth rate (1.70 ± 0.66% day⁻¹), and growth rate (0.125 ± 0.055 g day⁻¹). These values were significantly higher than those of the control treatment and numerically higher than those of the 3.5 g L⁻¹ treatment. Conclusion: In conclusion, enrichment of Tubifex worms with vitamin C at 2.5 g L⁻¹ is an effective strategy for improving growth performance and survival of African catfish larvae and may be applied as a practical nutritional approach during the early rearing stage.

Abstract

Background: Live feed availability is a critical factor determining the success of fish and shrimp hatchery operations. Among various live feeds, Artemia remains one of the most widely used organisms due to its suitable particle size, high digestibility, ease of storage, and capacity for nutritional enrichment.Aims: This review aimed to synthesize current knowledge regarding the nutritional value of Artemia, its application in hatchery systems, enrichment strategies, and its effects on larval growth and survival in commercially important aquaculture species. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following a structured search of peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Relevant literature was retrieved from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and other scientific databases using predefined keywords related to Artemia, enrichment technologies, hatchery management, and larval performance. Studies were screened based on relevance to fish and shrimp larviculture, nutritional enhancement, and biological performance indicators. Results: The reviewed studies consistently demonstrated that Artemia significantly improves larval growth, specific growth rate, size uniformity, and survival in various aquaculture species, including Litopenaeus vannamei, Penaeus monodon, Oreochromis niloticus, Lates calcarifer, and Clarias gariepinus. Furthermore, enrichment with highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids, microalgae, probiotics, synbiotics, vitamins, and phytogenic compounds substantially enhanced the nutritional quality of Artemia, resulting in improved growth performance, immune competence, stress tolerance, and disease resistance. Conclusions: Artemia remains an indispensable live feed in modern hatchery systems. Advances in enrichment technologies have transformed Artemia from a conventional live feed into an effective nutrient delivery platform capable of enhancing larval performance and hatchery productivity. Future development should focus on strengthening domestic Artemia production, improving enrichment efficiency, and integrating biosecure hatchery management practices to support sustainable aquaculture development.
