Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the capacity of freshwater mussel Pilsbryoconcha exilis as a biocontrol agent to prevent the transmission of Aeromonas hydrophila in tilapia cultivation. Briefly, 10 tilapia fish with average bodyweight  7,88±0,25 g were subjected to four treatments in the 8-liter aquarium with three replications in a randomized design trial. The treatments were M1 (one mussel for a two-liter of water), M2 (two mussels for a two-liter of water), and two control treatments without mussel ( M+ and M-). All treatments, except the M-, then challenged by adding A. hydrophila live culture to obtain a final density of 105 CFU mL-1 into the aquarium for 7 days duration. The final survival rate of fish, the water-total bacterial count, and the blood profile of animals were assessed. The research revealed that there is a significant impact from the presence of freshwater mussel on tilapia cultivation. Generally, the M2 treatment showed better results with a significant different (P<0,05) according to the survival rate of fish (100±0,00%), water-total bacterial count (4,53±0,03 log CFU mL-1), and fish leucocytes (4,30±0,70x104 cell mm-3). Nonetheless, there was no different (P>0,05) effect on fish erythrocytes among the treatments. Therefore, the feeding activity of freshwater mussel in the water column able to deplete pathogenic bacteria abundance and prevent pathogen transmission along with increasing the survival rate of fish.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccination on tilapia seedlings resulted from the vaccinated parent by hyperosmotic infiltration method at four different salinity to prevent Streptococcus agalactiae bacterial infection. A total of 100 seeds aged 20 days from the vaccinated mother were immersed in four different salinity: 0 ppt (control), 10 ppt, 20 ppt, and 30 ppt for five minutes, then removed and transferred into vaccine-containing containers for 30 minutes. Further maintenance was performed in freshwater aquariums and at days 10, 20, and 30 post vaccination, the immune system performance: Relative Percent Survival (RPS) after the challenge test, specific antibody level, and lysozyme was observed. The study was conducted using a complete randomized design with three replications. The results showed that the 10 ppt salinity treatment gave the best results compared to the others and control. The final RPS (10 ppt) value was 84.72%, 66.49%, and 47.06%, on the 10th, 20th, and 30thh days of vaccination, respectively. Specific antibody levels (10 ppt) were 0.077, 0.078, and 0.077 and lysozyme 0.092, 0.084, and 0.032 at days 10, 20, and 30 post vaccination, respectively. The value of RPS and specific antibody level at 10 ppt salinity was significantly different (P <0.05) compared to the other treatments, while the lysozyme treatment activity of 10 ppt was not significantly different compared to the 20 ppt treatment. Vaccination using 10 ppt saline hyperosmotic infiltration can improve the performance of the immune system by improving maternal immune protection against Streptococcus agalactiae infection.

Abstract

Pond bottom sediment conditions influence shrimp culture. As benthic organisms, shrimp are mainly on the surface of the pond bottom, so cultivation preparations related to improving sediment quality are essential. Pond bottom practice, such as drying, liming, and fertilizing, is common. However, in bottom pond conditions where total drying cannot be carried out, other treatments are needed, such as the addition of hydrogen peroxide. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding hydrogen peroxide in pond sediments on the performance of shrimp growth and water quality. The study was conducted with five doses of hydrogen peroxide (0.25 mL, 0.5 mL, 1 mL, 2 mL) mixed with 350 g of pond soil sediment. Ten shrimps with an average weight of 0,27±0,03 g were put into the rearing container, which had been given pond bottom sediment according to the treatment. The results showed that the 2 mL hydrogen peroxide treatment gave the best results on the growth rate and average weight of Pacific whiteleg shrimp at the end of rearing. Water quality such as pH value, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were not significantly different between treatments. Hydrogen peroxide treatment can improve shrimp growth performance without affecting water quality during rearing.

Abstract

Tilapia cultivation in Nagrak Village has been practiced for a long time as one of the community's sources of income. The aquaculture business is still carried out traditionally such as the use of ground ponds, feeding management that relies on natural feed, packaging that is not in accordance with standards, and fish marketing that only uses the direct selling technique (word of mouth). The obstacles faced by partners are limited knowledge on utilizing the potential of tilapia cultivation and processing, as well as the lack of planning and strategies of product marketing. This community service activity aims to provide insight into the potential for tilapia business development, introduce processed small tilapia fish called crispy baby fish as a healthy snack with economic value, and explain the description of business analysis, good packaging techniques, and online marketing. This activity was carried out with a socialization method or presentation of material to the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group of 35 people. The material presented were introduction to tilapia farming, the business potential of crispy tilapia snacks, an overview of business analysis, and online marketing strategies. The conclusion obtained from community service activities in Nagrak Village is needed for training activities to increase community knowledge and skills on developing the potential of the tilapia business.

Abstract

Abstract

Selecting an optimal aquacultural site can enhance feed efficiency and diminish production costs. Tilapia cultivated in an optimal environment will more readily digest feed and utilize nutrients. This research was conducted through field observations, including soil sampling, water quality measurements, and production performance assessments. The results of the soil texture analysis performed on the two ponds at Kaden Farm indicated that the proportion of sand ranged between 17–18%, dust 42–43%, and clay 40–42%. The water quality was 'slightly suitable,' with a suitability index of 66.67% for Pond 1 and 71.01% for Pond 2. The production performance of the tilapia, as indicated by the survival rate reached 70%, the relative growth rate was 0.017 g/day, and the specific growth rate reached 14.62%. Cultivating tilapia at Kaden Farm in terms of pond media in the form of soil is feasible for cultivation. The results indicate that water quality is slightly below the expected standards. The tilapia production at Kaden Farm is feasible based on the observed survival, relative growth rate, and specific growth rate.

Abstract

Background: The whitelegs shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is one of Indonesia's leading commodities. However, Intensive culture of Litopenaeus vannamei faces challenges such as environmental stress and decreased productivity due to fluctuating water quality.Aims & Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adding immunostimulants (vitamin-mineral mix and garlic extract at 2 ppm), probiotics (2 ppm every two weeks), and lime treatment (CaO at 10 ppm) on water quality and the productivity of L. vannamei in ponds at PT. Dewi Laut Aquaculture, Garut. The observed productivity parameters included Average Body Weight (ABW), population, biomass, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Survival Rate (SR), and size. Meanwhile, the measured water quality parameters included physical parameter such as temperature, chemical parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), total alkalinity, and total organic matter (TOM), as well as biological parameters such as total phytoplankton, total bacteria count (TBC), and total vibrio count (TVC).Result: The results showed that the applied treatments produced good culture performance, with ABW reaching 13.37 grams, SR at 91.01%, FCR at 1.7 and productivity of 20.39 tons/ha. Meanwhile, water quality monitoring indicated that some parameters exceeded the ideal ranges for shrimp culture, such as pH (maximum 9.12), TOM (up to 134 ppm), and TAN (up to 2.6 ppm). However, there is synergy between probiotics and immunostimulants, these conditions were still tolerable for the shrimp.
